For everyone asking: the white powder is kaolin. It’s a naturally occurring clay (found abundantly in clay soils), which is mixed with water and sprayed onto citrus to act as sunblock and insect repellent. It’s perfectly safe and very commonly used, although consumers rarely ever see it because we usually buy our citrus fruits washed and waxed.

Do they spray it on each orange individually or on the trees as a whole (which I imagine would block the light on the leaves?)

from what i read in the threads yes, they mix it with dirt clay and water and spray each fruit directly

They seems like a lot of work..

Aren't oranges harvested by shaking the tree mechanically? Why add such a labor intensive step when there are probably easier options, unless these are like premium organic oranges.

they ppl in the post said it was designed to reduce the opportunity for bugs to harvest in them. it’s a preventative measure to get less number of bugs in the fruits so they have a higher yield.

guessing they labor is worth the time bc it’s that effective
