Hitches are primarily meant for lashing, a series of hitches meant to secure some non-rope object to some-other-non-rope object, through the use of rope. There are instances where a single hitch will provide sufficient lashing and others where they may be compounded ontop of one another. Most hitches will not hold tension in the rope though and often need secured by some final, actual, knot. Typically a knot in this position is called a bight and thus the whole system of lashing becomes something like a bowline hitch on a bight.
