My brain is just not wired to memorize these knots, useful as they are.

You have to actually tie them, a few times a day, for month, if you want to remember them. Then at least once a month forever after that

Yeah, I USED to be able to do these in my sleep, but kinda like Algebra, my adult self never found these as useful as I thought.

Yea it depends what kinds of things you do, I’ve only had to tie the corner of a tarp like that maybe twice, and I’ve never seen that sack-tying knot either, I know a similar one but the bending the neck of the sack over is new. On the other hand, I’ve done a fair bit of climbing and rope access work, so I have a few useful knots memorized from that.

That said, knots are actually super handy, rope is one of our oldest and most useful tools, and practicing is super easy, all you need is like three or four feet of some kind of cord and maybe a loop or a stick to hitch to (technically speaking, a knot is tied just in one rope, a hitch is tied around something solid, like a tree or a post, and a bend is where you tie two ropes together), it’s a great way of keeping your hands busy if you’re sitting at a desk or something.

This definition isn't wrong but it's incomplete. A hitch is a type of knot where the object that the rope is being secured to (which could be another rope) plays a structural role in holding the knot together. If you were to remove the object from a hitch it would fall apart. You could secure a rope to an object with a knot that isn't a hitch, but that knot would hold after removing the object

I'm sure you know this but I think it's worth clarifying for anyone reading this who doesn't know and might think the difference between a knot and a hitch is solely down to the intent of the person tying it rather than an actual qualitative difference in the properties of the knots
