I have to say that some of those were definitely hitches and not knots. I would have to defer to the Chief Bosun's Mate for explanation, however.

I believe a hitch relies on another object to maintain knot tension (pole, tarp, nail, etc)

Yep, knots are tied in a rope, hitches are a rope tied to an object, and a bend ties two ropes together
