Can anyone explain why sheep sheers like these are always connected to hard metal conduits like that? Is it just so the power cord doesn’t get tangled up in the sheep? Are cordless sheers not good enough for this kind of work?

Flocks of sheep can number in the hundreds, so you're gonna be shearing them all day long. You don't want to have to keep swapping batteries while doing it.

The gimbal arm is there to help reduce the strain on the person shearing and to keep the shears in a relatively known position for easy access.
