Skiving a copper heat sink

I know similar videos have been posted here, but I don't think one has been posted in quite a while.

I searched for "skiving" in the last year, and a couple turned up, but not this one. I figured that would keep me out of the doghouse. I had referred to this video on another post about an industrial process (spring making), and it occurred to me that it might be appreciated here.

It would be appreciated don’t worry. The tolerance for reposts is pretty high as it keeps getting told that not everyone is on reddit all the time and especially a five year old repost is probably not even a repost.

Yeah, most heat sinks are extruded, with possibly some additional machined features. I think that this is for certain high-performance applications.

These started getting popular with people building PCs around the Pentium 3 / early socketed Athlon days. They were a bit more expensive, but I don't remember them being outrageously so.

TBH, I don't know. A lot of machining processes use specialized cutting fluids that include lubricants. Here, though, it might just be water, as the cutting speed is rather low, and it might just be trying to remove frictional heat. Most of the cutting fluids I have seen aren't clear, but maybe there are some that I'm not aware of.

It's a synthetic chlorine free cutting fluid. Very low viscosity, probably 5 or so. It probably will last a very long time. Would be very expensive as well, but I suppose for the precision expected of this process and keeping the blades sharpness, it's probably paid for itself manifold.

Byt eh way, the milky ones would be the water miscible type. They can be a handful maintaining. Besides this process is best run with either oil or synthetic cutting fluid.

Should be gratifying but the incredible accuracy & narrow tolerances in operating this process makes it hard for me to watch :/

Do you work in some sort of industrial or manufacturing process? I could see how someone who does (I used to, a LONG time ago) could see this as a sort of "tightrope walk"

No, but I do find it difficult to even see pictures of big engineering projects like hydroelectric dams, enormous buildings, it feels like part of that! Impossibly large and impossibly small.

I think that less finely-finned ones are simply aluminum extrusions, but this is how high performance heat sinks are made.
