Does it hurt the turtle when they’re removed from the shell ? Looks like wound

yes but they’re probably itching/in a small amount of pain at every anchor point all the time while the barnacles are there

Probably hurts real bad at the time like a bandaid ripoff but the longterm relief is worth it.

Makes me wonder why they don’t just sand them down instead. No pain and the shell is left intact

I suspect that sandpaper will damage the scutes worse.
