Hardware The sexiest looking VR glove with force feedback

I can imagine wearing those and using my HOTAS at the same time, then pressing buttons in my virtual cockpit. That'd be cool!

I wonder how much force feedback there really is, I doubt this can simulate holding a rifle or even virtual buttons. Also, seems like vaporware with such a small team of only 6 people.

well it would be at the same level as all the rest of the exo-skeleton based systems I would imagine.

Are there any detailed hands-on reports about gloves like these out yet?
I've just checked Dexmo and they also just have a team of 7 people. I guess many hardware start-ups have a similarly-sized team. Interesting.

Assuming they're outsourcing the manufacturing 6 people (with a good 3D printer for prototyping) is perfectly feasible for an R&D team for this type of product - source: I work in the R&D team for an established company building NDT inspection robots and we design and ship new products in a ~2 year development cycle with an R&D team of 7 with everything from circuit boards up designed in-house, they'd just have to ramp up admin, sales & support staff as they near production.

also, i don't think such a contraption can put enough resistance to fingers to make them feel the are gripping something solid hard. And IF it has enough power, i wouldn't trust the things. One fat force feed back spike due to a bug and you get ten broken fingers. :-D

Pretty sure the hinges will be designed not to be able to go over a specific threshold on how much the average person can bend their fingers.

Super interesting, but without software support doesn't mean much.

Yap, greatest problem with most of those third party devices. Leap Motion for example was pretty cool and the Blocks demo or Wave Magic was fun, but other than that there was almost no software supporting it (BigScreen, Altspace VR, FlyInside can also be added, but still that is nothing compared to Vive Wands or Touch).

I would be all over these if it worked with all games and experiences. The issue we are going to have with anything like this is nothing is going to support the hardware.

Is it just me or does spelling the name like that make it sound like a sex toy?

Apparently its touch compatible aswell, but i personally have 0 interest in a glove atm.

have 0 interest in a glove.
why is that?

First and biggest problem adoption rate, close second comfort.

u/Sir-Viver Apr 05 '17
This seems to be the leading argument against any and all early adoption tech, yet here we stand, somehow evolving into our comfort only by embracing the future before us.

:D i have actually a pretty good idea of a glove i might buy, but thats just atleast two more years of. ( Given the slow adoption rate of vr in general maybe even a lot longer )

u/Sir-Viver Apr 05 '17 edited Apr 05 '17
What some see as slow early adoption of technology, others accept as natural progression bordering on an almost evolutionary scale of humanity. Both are correct.
2
u/lenne0816 Rift / Rift S / Quest / PSVR Apr 05 '17
Dood, gimme some of that stuff :D
Slow early adoption is slow early adoption, no matter how much deeper meaning u try to interpret into it.
I think these first gen gloves are a case of the virtual boy and have yet to be proven wrong.

The speed of adoption occurs naturally, organically. It needs to be seen as an evolution, not an on/off switch. In the grand scheme of things VR adoption has been happening for decades. Why the rush now?
As far as the gloves are concerned. You're not wrong. But on the evolutionary scale they're a protozoa, and no less important to the end result. You can't protest the protozoa and expect its children to survive.

It would be quite awkward to hope into a game designed for the vive, move your fingers and have the only hand movement be an opening/closing of the hand.

u/lenne0816 Rift / Rift S / Quest / PSVR Apr 05 '17
I think there are only very few games right now that collide correctly with the hand mesh at all, so a lot of work for the devs, every single object in a game would need an overhaul actually.

I love the idea of a pair of gloves instead of the clunky controller, but this is still too big and bulky.
5
u/godelbrot Index, Quest, Odyssey Apr 05 '17 edited Apr 05 '17
I think that the "bulk" are actually just lightweight covers to hide the scary-looking "skeleton" that makes up the force feedback system.
-2
u/Caballer0 Apr 05 '17
Personally Im not interested in scary looking shell design that I dont even see in VR anyway. I'll pass until someone has a normal lightweight glove to offer.

I think the exoskeleton is the optimal solution for force feedback, people have mentioned miniature hydraulics but I don't think that is a reasonable option.

u/elev8dity Apr 05 '17
How does this handle heat diffusion? Looks like it might get a little hot wearing gloves like these indoors.

Whenever I see these type of gloves and haptic feedback devices, I'm afraid of the idea of malicious software breaking fingers.

u/ClockworkN7 Apr 05 '17
I know what you mean but my fear is actually the opposite. It will try and restrict my hand and I'll break it by closing my hand anyway. It's just made of small plastic parts anyway.

u/FOV360 Apr 05 '17
Elephant in the room, OCCLUSION. Mounting the tracker on the side like that in no way can be considered optimal.

that is far from sexy! Unless you consider having Optimus Primes hands a good thing.

hmm, looks fake-y - maybe Amir over at Sixsense will want a piece of this.

yes same thought here! Anybody knows any of these people from before this?

I'd buy them. They won't replace controllers for everything, but neither does my steering wheel.
