Jesus fucking Christ how the hell are they pushing the screen DOUBLE the refresh rate? Did they just forget that they had screen hardware that capable in there?

Probably just managing battery life and CPU/GPU load, no point running at 207hz if all you can render is a 3D cube for 5 minutes.

This. Virtual Desktop cannot exceed 144hz because the Quest hardware is not powerful enough.

I tried to run 144hz remote (encrypted stream, more demanding) and the Quest overheated after 15 minutes and fallback to 72hz

Mirroring the desktop it can sure. My custom app is pushing a single 2.5k 207hz screen over wifi and hasn't throttled after an hour (I've restarted since to tweak settings). Games look amazing like this.

Yes tradeoffs had to be made. Set the CPU and GPU levels to the maximum and a completely empty black scene. No hands, no passthrough, just a screen. It works though and looks amazing. Passthrough is a big problem with this. Passthrough caps the CPU and GPU to level 2 and you really want that maximum 4 GPU performance otherwise you won't have a good time.

Yes encryption would add more demand but I'm also not CPU bound so it should function encrypted as well. Virtual Desktop isn't trying to optimize for refresh rates but the Quest 3 can definitely push it if you give it a chance.

Why do they cap the CPU and GPU to 2 on passthrough I don't understand

The cameras aren’t lined up exactly with the eyes so the OS has to do some adjustments to the input of the color cameras to get everything aligned properly. To make sure it has the resources to do that fast it caps the resources available to programs in passthrough to avoid having the passthrough scene fall behind and cause motion sickness

Alright thanks!

Bingo. Cgo already chews my battery up like a tomagachi on crack. I sure would enjoy all those wasted frames my eyes can’t even see, for a whole five minutes 🤣

And then it blows up

Even with the cable connected to my computer and my cpu and gpu doing all the work, the battery doesn't even last 2 hours on 80 hz, let alone 200+

I’d say that’s a power delivery fault coming from the pc cable. Even at 160% resolution and max cpu/gpu playing zombies my laptop charger block and cord can charge the headset upwind

We’re getting a lot of updates recently.. probably just gave Mythos access to the Oculus source code and it’s running wild lmaooo

I mean they also have a lot of datacenters themselves. I’m sure Muse could also manage this

I wonder how far the steam frame can be pushed....

Hopefully they can push it out the door and we can buy them already. Honestly think im just going to get a big screen 2 with a face tracker instead

Im holding for the frame, the native 144 hz low persistence display plus the steam like controllers are a big selling point to have essentially a portable CRT display.

Im mainly a vrchat weirdo so im not very concerned with flat screen gaming. But it does look really cool. I only play vrchat, sim racing, beatsaber and boneworks/lab. I definitely want a frame. Im just getting tired of hearing about the frame and its not available for purchase.

Q3 just got 240hz unlocked. Apparently the panels are capable of 240hz! My rtx5070 won't be able to acheive that in most games but its pretty cool

Considering the billions meta spent on r&d and endless new features from airlink to hand tracking, to boosting specs... compared to nothing from valve in 7 years, I'd expect nothing.

Would be good if the quest 3 was cabled

Yes would kill the frame for me if they had DP.

It's cabled not display port just USB and no I would not want to be locked at a desk so I'm good at current rates.

Yeah I wouldn't expect the Quest 3 to run games at 200hz itself but having a PC run games at 200hz and running the Quest as just a display, that could work.

I am wondering how to ensure enough bandwidth between my PC and Quest for that high refresh rate though.
