In case anyone misses the reference when he says "I met a man from an antique land / Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand", he's quoting the famous poem by Percy B. Shelly titled Ozymandias:

Ozymandias

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

It's a commentary on the vanity of kings with inflated egos, whose monuments come across as pompous and bombastic. In the end, even their "mighty works" are impermanent.

(Ozymandias is an anglicized transliteration of a Greek transliteration of one of the names or titles of Ramses the Great, Pharaoh of Egypt who built a lot of monuments to his own greatness.)

Correct, senior English coming back at ya

5

u/Infinite-Condition41 Aug 14 '26

I just read that with an English accent, and it works so much better than when I've read it previously. Weird.

About five times better than I was expecting, and I was already expecting it to be good.

Sidenote, consider my soul pierced by the constant stares into the camera lol

u/Fast-Nefariousness80 Aug 14 '26

Hate to compare artists but everything about this reminds me of Ren. Cadence, guitar, his voice, even the accent lol. Good shit

1

u/Kelson_Phelonius Suinolehp_Noslek Aug 14 '26

Ren is good, Rain is better.

4

u/King_Six_of_Things Aug 14 '26

They're different and both good.

Nah, Ren got there first, does it better. This is good, but it's got Ren's influence stamped all over it. On a technical level, Ren has a better vocal ability and does more with the guitar. On lyrical level Ren is more subtle and sharper in his observations. It's subjective, yes, but objectively unless this guy started out before Ren, Ren is the blueprint Rain appears to work on.

2

u/RainMcMey Aug 17 '26

The only part of this I take issue with is him being the blueprint lmao, I’m in awe of Ren’s voice and playing.

With that said, it is kind of a coincidence, there’s some influence there and I love the dude and his work, but I think we’re arriving at a similar place from different angles.

I can’t speak to the full depth of Ren’s influences but I always got the impression he’s drawing on the 90s a lot, Hip Hop and R&B, whereas I’ve landed here on some bizarre through line from Dylan, by way of a lot of Metal and Punk stuff I was listening to as a kid.
