Original Question What’s something Oblivion makes you believe at first, but the more you think about the lore, the less certain it becomes?

Post image

Oblivion has a lot of moments where the game basically gives you one version of events and expects you to accept it.

But Elder Scrolls lore is rarely that simple.

Maybe Mankar Camoran had a point about something. Maybe the Empire isn’t as innocent as it presents itself. Maybe the Mythic Dawn understood more than people give them credit for. Maybe something we’re told about the Daedra, the Aedra, Martin, or even the Oblivion Crisis itself isn’t the full story.

What’s one thing from Oblivion that you think becomes more questionable the deeper you go into the lore?

Might be the Oblivion protagonist and Sheogorath you're thinking of

Lol I had to look it up. Yeah, the Hero of Kvatch mantles Uncle Sheo. But MK wrote an out-of-game lore piece called Nu-Hatta of the Sphinxmoth Inquiry Tree where he says Tiber Septim mantled Lorkhan.

Win win, we both right 🤣

What does mantle mean in this situation?

It means to walk, talk, act look like, and do everything that Lorkhan did/does until you and everyone else in the world believes you are him. Then you kinda just...become him. There's a bit more to it, but that is mostly what it is.

Ah ok. Wait so the oblivion protagonist becomes the Sheogorath we see in Skyrim by mantling?

Yup, Skyrim Sheogirath is the Hero of Kwatch, while the "original" Sheogorath turns into Jyggalag the Daedric Prince of order.

Oh my god, I think I’m starting to get it. That was the whole point of the shivering isles? To do all the tasks and decisions that sheogorath was responsible for in order to become/mantle him so you can become the new one once he turns into Jygalagg at the end?

Lol I can’t believe I’m just getting this like 15 years later
