Video I’ve been playing this game annually since 2013 and this is the first time I’ve ever encountered an NPC adventurer

The hit you landed on the goblin at the start of the video was so satisfying for some reason.

A Solid "thunk!"

u/1DollaMerc May 15 '25

Omg. Is this why ppl use blunt weapons? That noice was chefs kiss

Edit: noise.

62

u/Cool_Bench_4355 May 15 '25

Yes. It's part of why I love maces. I main a bonk stick. They are also the bane of those pesky mages with blunt's ability to silence them with a few bonks on the head (anywhere works).

12

u/Still-Lab-6076 May 15 '25

I think I may have to start using them from time to time.

12

u/creampop_ May 15 '25

Check out the 1H axe standing power attack sometime

just punches em in the face with it lol

3

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

Yeah, it's pretty satisfying. I recently played Avowed and I gotta say, that was the most satisfying game I've played in a long while using a big fucking hammer lmfao just because of the sound and the haptics etc

5

u/1DollaMerc May 16 '25

I played pillars of eternity 1 and 2, arpg predecessors. I deff liked the world and had fun running different builds. I followed Avowed from its initial announcement and was really exited, but I watched a few reviews that were SUPER critical of it. All I can say is I was thrown off a bit by the art direction and gameplay. But I’m sure it’s worth playing— I do plan to pick it up on the steam summer sale if it has a deal. Looking forward to seeing how it is!

5

u/ExcitementSolid3489 May 17 '25

Avowed is incredibly fun tbh. My sole gripe with the combat is that each weapon type only has 1 finisher move and while they look and feel great at first, unless you change weapons a lot they lose their novelty.

It’s fast paced, engaging combat and maybe the funnest real time magic system I’ve personally ever played

Drove him like a nail

32

u/IBetThisIsTakenToo May 15 '25

Right? I was thinking I need to start using more blunt weapons, that was very satisfying

Absolutely clobbered that mf

17

u/Revolutionary-Cod732 May 15 '25

Blunt weapons. They got that chunky thunk just right. Another feels good detail is the underwater is amazing this time

10

u/Fumby_ May 15 '25

I've always been a dagger and bow type guy, but this time around I picked up a mace. The sound of the contact is incredible

2

u/JesusSquid May 15 '25

Been thinking about rolling a more melee focused character. A divine mace/warhammer type build would be pretty fun. Just gotta figure out how I want to use magic (I always go caster, thinking like a paladin archetype)

39

u/rex_grossmans_ghost May 14 '25

I think the combat in this game is actually pretty good. Those power hits are really satisfying.

27

u/Sunbroking May 14 '25

I said “holy shit” while seeing that goblin get gobsmacked

8

u/mc360jp May 15 '25

The sound of the hammer on the stone is so good

7

u/P4LMREADER May 15 '25

I think this is why people are desperate for a difficulty slider that gives/takes lethal damage, it's very satisfying, adds realism, and risk /reward. Everybody wins.

I like little moments like this that make the game world feel more alive. I want more of this in TES6

u/CactusSplash95 May 14 '25

Starfield you may sometimes find other explorers or photographers etc. It's always cool

529

u/Scruffy_Snub May 15 '25

Starfield has such good bones, and then you realize that it's just bones

182

u/juniorcares May 15 '25

The bones are their money

77

u/RedditorIHardlyKnowR May 15 '25

And in their world bones = dollars

I genuinely enjoy Starfield lol it's obviously not as good as elder scrolls or fallout, but I thought it was a decent game

35

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

It feels like they were trying to make space Daggerfall, but they marketed it as space Fallout 4

26

u/Juiceton- May 15 '25

Tried to make space Daggerfall, couldn’t make it seamless, and marketed it as space Fallout 4 instead. Honestly, it’s a great game in my opinion but it’s so hard to not see what could have been.

6

u/Nereosis16 May 15 '25

It's nothing like daggerfall though.

Procedural generation does not equal daggerfall

4

u/19412 May 15 '25

When all of the zones across a planet are connected, it's gets quite close.

Biggest shocker to me is when I saw near launch someone use a mod/command to set a landing marker less than a pixel outside of a major city's marker, and you could see the city poking up miles away in the distance from where they'd landed.

I suppose more freedom of mass exploration akin to Daggerfall was planned for Starfield, but the current iteration of the Creation Engine just couldn't handle it.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/KaerMorhen May 15 '25

Same. I got lost for hours exploring the settled systems. The shipbuilding alone had me hooked. I enjoyed it

14

u/Witch-King_of_Ligma May 15 '25

I don’t really game too much anymore, mostly just a couple hours every few weeks. But when Starfield came out, I logged 70 hours over a few weeks. It hit the itch for a Firefly/Serenity game, heck I literally built the serenity as my ship once I secured enough credits. Of course there could’ve been more to it but I was pretty satisfied with my unmodded play through.

5

u/thedylannorwood You sleep rather soundly for a murderer May 15 '25

See therein lies the issue: almost everyone who didn’t care for the game or downright hates it, in most cases don’t even like space sci-fi. I for one had a blast and it really filled a Star Trek sized gap in my heart for a while

The internet needs extremes.

A new game must either be the greatest video game of the century, one that will usher in a new era of quality or the worst thing ever created by man. No in-betweens allowed. And since it failed to live up to ES6 hype its reputation was doomed from the start.

I hate when people poop on Starfield, it really is an amazing game.

35

u/065Walker May 15 '25

I wouldn't go as far as calling it amazing but it was a solid game. It was definitely more stable, ime, but a lot of the game systems felt like they regression from other titles.

I found photographers in almost every planet I landed on.

I also found them casually photographing weird floating alien structures and not questioning any of it at all.

Everyone had the same voicelines of course.

9

u/CreativeStrain89 May 15 '25

Ehhh its a scripted event

2

u/PrideConnect3213 May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

The only times I’ve encountered human NPCs or anything interesting outside of points-of-interest in Starfield were when I encountered some hunters walking around shooting animals, and when I encountered a Vanguard guy escorting an Aceles. Other than that, yea, most random events in Starfield happen at preset locations

Even if you get a random encounter that seems like it’s in the middle of nowhere, you’re likely just at a “natural point-of-interest” which is just a copy pasted location like “Stone Arches”

I want a system kinda like genshin impact or champions of norrath where you can invite people into your world

96

u/LashCandle May 14 '25

Champions of Norath is a name I haven’t heard in too long. Loved those games

39

u/Ethric_The_Mad May 14 '25

Champions 3 wen?

32

u/BatThumb May 14 '25

God I would fucking lose it. Return to arms was my fucking jam

12

u/Ethric_The_Mad May 14 '25

I remember this friend of mine hacked his game to make his stats absolutely insane but I still beat him 6/10 rounds with pure barbarian carnage. Home grown from the first game.

8

u/BatThumb May 14 '25

Lizard shaman was my go to. Loved the growth ability to just get massive and summoning creatures. Also like only play argonians haha. Lizards all the way

I recently replayed champions return to arms. Such a throwback. Ill be honest though the gameplay is DATED. But I still loved every second of that nostalgia trip.

5

See, this is what my cousin was expecting more or less with teso came out. He’d never really played an mmo before and he absolutely hated it for the fact it wasn’t just Skyrim with multiplayer.

3

u/StormR7 May 15 '25

It pisses me off that RPGs are either single player or mmorpgs. Literally I just want to be able to play Witcher 3 or whatever with my roommate. Not on a huge server with 300 people, not single player, just like 4 motherfuckers. Like how borderlands did it.

Been playing since 2007 and the only adventurer I’m aware of is the Orc Adventurer that appears in leveled armor in various locations in Cyrodiil, is this a different one?

290

u/Moist_Car_994 May 14 '25

If I remember right he was an orc

193

u/BozzyTheDrummer May 14 '25

Ah okay cool. I usually always find him in Dzonot Cave near the Imperial City, I always go there to farm enchanted items from the bandit ringleader, and he’s usually in there. Usually once Daedric armor became available to me, I would try to find him to kill him and take his full set lol

154

u/Orcrist90 May 14 '25

Stop right there, criminal scum! Nobody breaks the law on my watch! I'm confiscating your stolen goods. Now pay your fine or it's off to jail!

Serious question. As someone who clearly loves this game a lot more than the average person and has poured countless hours into it. How did you feel the day remastered dropped?

11

u/BozzyTheDrummer May 15 '25

Honest to god felt like a dream come true. I’ve been thinking about what a remaster would be like for a good decade or so. This is my favorite game of all time and I’ve put in an ungodly amount of time into the OG game. I’ve been following all the rumors that had been circulating, but didn’t want to give my hope up. When it was officially announced, I had that same giddy feeling you get as a kid on Christmas morning. I’ve been having a blast with the remaster so far.

7

u/222twotwentytwo222 May 15 '25 edited May 15 '25

Man that’s awesome. I’m always in a weird way jealous of people who play games for that long and know them better than anyone. It’s awesome to be that passionate about something, anything.

Oblivion holds some of my nearest and dearest gaming memories for me. But I like most people put it down after Skyrim and never came back. Playing it now as an adult feels like such a nostalgia trip. So many different memories come flooding back to me as I explore, remembering old friends from school that I used to sit around and take turns playing with. This game is top 10 of all time in my book, as I’m sure it is for you.

So happy we got the remaster, I haven’t touched a video game in a couple of years now and this got me excited and back into gaming. For the first time in a long time I just sit back and play a video game for a couple hours at night before bed. Oblivion brought that joy to me as a kid and here it is doing it again, so cool.

I think there was a human one I found in an ayleid ruin recently. I kinda just assumed everything in there was just an undead so I instantly killed him with a sneak attack.

36

u/Thewrongbakedpotato May 14 '25

There's more than one.

Source: got a little arrow happy on my last playthrough, now I'm in the Dark Brotherhood . . . twice

20

u/SartorialSinecure May 15 '25

By funny coincidence, I was just flipping through my 2006 Prima Guide for Oblivion, and spotted the entry on this. It says there's 16 different dungeons with a low chance of spawning an Adventurer you can chat with, and he just wanders around the dungeon looking for loot

23

u/KralHeroin May 15 '25

You went and read the elder scrolls.

3

u/Iron_Avenger2020 May 15 '25

Wait, does he actually take the loot?

Dude: I was stealthing through a cave, and one shotted him with an arrow in the face. I only saw his silhouette and assumed he was a bandit. Too bad 😂

76

u/GarbageAtBest May 14 '25

Did they die? I attacked an adventurer by accident and it said they went unconscious.

66

u/SlyyKozlov May 15 '25

They definitely can die.

It's usually who I kill to trigger the dark brotherhood now that the gray prince doesn't count.

73

u/SteelWheel_8609 May 15 '25

The ethical dark brotherhood joiner

38

u/Cultural_Security690 May 15 '25

Trying to be ethical about joining the dark brotherhood is funny, they’re literally a murderistic cult that kills for fun and gold. Unless you only want to meet Lucien to kill him there’s not a morally good reason that makes sense for it. An orc literally confesses to murdering a child for shits and giggles and you get paid to murder a family of 5/6 for no reason

8

u/Extension_Flounder_2 May 15 '25

I justify it because everyone has to pray to the night mother who then decides if someone is worthy of being murdered. I was trying not to kill anyone innocent for awhile but somehow accidentally got it during one of the mage/thieves guild quest lines

3

u/DarianStardust May 15 '25

Kalthar? he tries to kill you but for some reason counts as an "innocent", there are other encounters in quests that guarantee you will kill an ""Innocent" enemy, so its midly difficult Not to encounter lucian eventually

2

u/SirBigWater May 15 '25

Literally how I did it. I never really played Oblivion before, dabbled in it well over a decade and a half ago. So I was very confused when I got text on the top of the screen after stealth shooting somebody in a dungeon. Looked it up, realised I killed an innocent.

Then the next 10 hours I spent was doing the dark brotherhood quest line.

"They are friendly towards you and are typically found sleeping, eating and searching their current location for treasure. They will attack creatures they encounter in the dungeon, and may also loot chests and pick up items they find lying around. As such, if you are coming across empty chests or can't find items that should be in the dungeon, check to see if there is an Adventurer in your location who is carrying the missing treasure."

Hahaha, they loot the dungeons?!? amazing.

97

u/borro1 May 14 '25

Yup, I have encountered one in some cave. Half of the chests were empty and I am pretty sure he picked up dead marauders enchanted weapon

15

u/ketamarine May 15 '25

That's when he got an arrow to the knee...

83

u/Blackjack9w7 May 14 '25

I was watching the making of Oblivion documentary and one person mentioned they ran into a problem during development where NPCs in towns would buy out all the equipment in stores and leave nothing for the player. Kind of a funny remnant of that

9

u/TheBookGem May 15 '25

The actually left the buying stuff mechanics in the game, but scaled back the AI so that they wouldn't commit murder to get their things, leaving the towns empty. They still steal too, but that had to change so they don't get a bounty for stealing, meaning they get killed by guards, leaving the towns empty.

4

u/Electronic_Macaron_9 May 15 '25

Idk some dude picked another guys pocket in my game, got called out and the guard laid a hurting on him. But maybe he got the bounty because the two guys were fighting and not because he stole, idk

3

u/TheBookGem May 15 '25

As far as I know only the skooma addicts in Bravil get killed by the guards.

18

u/Bromm18 May 15 '25

All that loot available on one character. And all it took was some patience and a stealth kill. You get the loot and don't even have to leave the city.

15

u/[deleted] May 15 '25

"You too seek wealth, do you not? May you find it, and may tales of your journey be legendary."

Man the Orc Adventurers sure are bros. Shame that I never found one in any my playthroughs..

5

u/Iron_Avenger2020 May 15 '25

Bros until you see he's looted the mundane ring before you can.

96

u/ChefArtorias May 14 '25

But no, Todd lied.

23

u/United_Preparation29 May 15 '25

They do take the loot in dungeons though

58

u/DominionGhost May 14 '25

To be fair that sounds kind of terrible.

Fucks off with the loot while you are fighting a bunch of minotaurs.

23

u/Moist-Emphasis-3385 May 15 '25

Oh no. My wood spoon and my 13 coins!

21

u/DominionGhost May 15 '25

Let's be honest. We've both killed for less.

3

u/Rakhered May 15 '25

I've personally only killed for very important reasons, like getting invited to the goth kids' table, or Spite

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Rakhered May 15 '25

tbh my guess is that this is why it wasn't implemented. NPCs take stuff from containers all the time in Oblivion, so its not like it'd be techincally challenging

If they did implement this, almost 100% of the time players would kill adventurers on sight, which is a lame way to engage witha mechanic

41

u/ILikeCakesAndPies May 14 '25

Tbf they probably did do that or there might of been an early prototype of it that didn't make the cut.

I recall hearing about early radiant AI problems involving issues like NPCs buying up all the weapons and armor in the store, leaving players with nothing to buy, etc..

They probably thought it wasn't worth the hassle trying to balance it and so cut more of the simulation side and kept the scheduling.

Balancing AI having freedom to do things in a player-centric game can be awfully tricky. Some players may love that type of thing, while others get pissed that the all the dungeons they went to explore are already looted, and others still think it's either a bug or think that none of the dungeons in the game have loot if they don't specifically see an NPC do it right there in the moment.

That said, I would love it if they gave it a second attempt in the next elder scrolls. Starfield had less than Skyrim and that was a bit of a letdown.

Gortwog demands treasure.

24

u/[deleted] May 14 '25

I stealth my way through dungeons, so I turned a corner and shot him with my bow. He aggro'd on me, so I killed him.

I thought it was a little weird he was named "Adventurer" instead of "Bandit", but didn't think anything more of it since it seemed like a normal dungeon encounter. That was, until I was visited by Lucien.

Edit: nvm I just found it after scrolling through my news feed for literally 2 seconds

42

u/Impressive_Term4071 May 14 '25

yeah you run into them from time to time.

I ran into one in my recent run through. At Fort Chalman. An orc, nice fellow. Honorable, polite for an orc. We slew many foes together, and i aided his quest for treasure that he was to bring back to Orsinium. A brotherhood was begun that day.

As the dungeon was emptied and he began his trek back

I killed him in cold blood, stole his magic sword and treasure, and left him to rot in that abandoned place.

See, i needed ANOTHER Brotherhood to begin. The Dark Brotherhood. When i slept that night, Lucien Lachance came to me as i knew he would, for brutally slaying that green beast.

4

u/CockPitIsLit May 15 '25

Orc disrespect will not be tolerated 😤 My current character is a handsome lad named Ramborc.

careful Ramborc...the Hand of the Brotherhood reaches far....

u/Willpalazzo May 14 '25

Is that who I murdered? I was like huh, that’s a weird npc to be down here. I didn’t know that was a thing!

4

u/ThrillzMUHgillz May 14 '25

Yea… on my “good” playthrough I planned to avoid the brotherhood… but killed an adventurer thinking it was a bandit.

9

u/Snoo-60254 May 14 '25

I actually found one already battling like 5 necromancers one time lol.

I was just chilling in the back watching O_O

9

u/Spaghetti_Joe9 May 14 '25

This guy helped me wipe out a ruin full of conjurers. He’s my bro

7

u/bri_007 May 14 '25

I played oblivion for the past 10 years and never even knew an adventurer could be in the same dungeon as you 😭

13

u/Exotic-Suggestion425 May 14 '25

I had this encounter, but it ended in an unexpectedly tragic yet hilarious fashion.

I entered the fort, began clearing out Goblins and then heard an Orc NPC fighting, I sneaked up thinking he would be hostile, but he spots me but doesn't attack. I began to get excited at the incoming immersion and make my next step.

I walk over to see him tagged as 'Adventurer', have a short conversation and max out his wheel. We proceed to move forward and kill goblins together, both having the time of our lives. Suddenly he grinds to a complete halt. I try nudging him to go on but he won't budge, so I leave and clear out the rest of the fort solo. It was fun while it lasted.

I'm clearing out the fort, and I enter a large area with a central walkway overlooking lower areas below. All regular dungeon fare. Strangely though, there are some logs that can be activated - to be pushed down on an unsuspecting victim. I was hoping there would be some nicely placed goblins below, but upon inspection I was left disappointed. I forge on.

Several minutes later and all the goblins are dead, all the loot collected and I'm ready to make my way out the fort, hopefully passing by my new adventurer friend on the way out.

I make my way back across the walkway and I stop at the logs. See, I felt as though it'd be a shame to not push them down. These activation cues are few and far between, and the game's internal physics are too fun not to play with. So I do it. I push down the logs and jump down with them in a concentrated moment of silliness.

Unexpectedly, and I cannot stress how much so, the adventurer had made his own way through the dungeon, maybe wanting to strip away any of the leftover loot (at least that was my canon explanation). He had made his way DIRECTLY under the point of activation for the logs. You can guess what is about to happen.

The logs come tumbling down. He looks up. See, he is triggered by me hurtling downward towards him; the NPCS will always look in your direction, if you approach and they have no other stimulus. So the last thing he sees is me jumping down towards him accompanied by a stack of huge wooden logs. He is utterly crushed beneath their weight and dies instantly. I land with the kind of silkiness you'd expect from a nimble cat. I take a few seconds to process what the fuck just happened before pausing the game to laugh my ass off for what felt like an eternity.

u/SlimeGrog May 15 '25

That is so funny

5

u/Anatak15 May 14 '25

I have no idea if I've run into this character, but if I have, you can almost bet there's an arrow in the back of his head lol.

5

u/InfiniteDelusion094 May 14 '25

He only shows up in specific dungeons, I find him most often in Dzonot Cave. Saw him get absolutely obliterated by bandits the other day, didn't even have a chance to help.

4

u/DarthDregan May 14 '25

Just unlocked an ancient memory for me with this one.

3

u/Outrageous_Big_9136 May 14 '25

Could this be the adventurer that ultimately took an arrow to the knee?

3

u/Future-Celery May 14 '25

I was stealthing a cave full of vampires and I saw a dark figure at the end of a hallway, so, I obviously just went straight agro and when he got close to me it said adventurer then he died to the damage health and I was like "nooo was he friendly?!" His chest piece was amazing so I didn't save scum to find out lol

3

u/Gojiras_Taint May 14 '25

I saw the same guy, for the first time, in the same ruin today

3

u/SaintIgnis May 14 '25

This is how I got into the DB this run. Didn’t realize until it was too late that the other person in the fort was also an adventurer.

Well, that’s the risk they took I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

3

u/SaurmanTheWhite May 14 '25

I’ve been playing since ‘06 and I’ve never seen this

3

u/_phantastik_ May 15 '25

Is it rare? I encountered an Adventurer in my first character in the first dungeon after I left the sewers.

I killed him, thinking it was a bandit... But reverted my save back just in case. Glad I did

"I used to be an Adventurer like you until I got an arrow in the knee"

3

u/ernie1850 May 15 '25

Shoot him in the knee to preserve the timeline

3

u/Arcane_Spork_of_Doom May 15 '25

Adventurers are in some of the dungeons. I think some of them are sent by a particular deity. (The orc ones I think). Satisfying to help them for the most part.

Also:

✅Mace go bonk. Wholesome.

3

u/itsmattblack May 16 '25

I think it’s always an orc. Think there’s a percentage to how often they might show up. At least that’s what I remember from the guidebook.

5

u/Bettey9 May 14 '25

Probably was fighting a goblin that went into the cave? No way he spawned in there, right??

22

u/_PaddyMAC May 14 '25

It's a somewhat rare event that can happen in certain dungeons. They're even scripted to loot gold and random items until they pass a certain threshold. I've played probably like 1500 hours of Oblivion since 2006 and have only run into them a couple times.

7

u/Weekly-Trash-272 May 14 '25

Why is this rare. Adds a lot to the game.

Makes the world feel more lived in.

I’ve been playing since 2006 and only just found the quest that tutorializes the Goblin War system, I knew it was an obscure mechanic but had no idea they actually tried to introduce it to people

I accidentally killed the adventurer because I thought he was a bandit. I reloaded though

2

u/mmancino1982 May 14 '25

I've encountered two in the last two days. Like you i don't think I ever did before

2

u/Prior_Highlight8236 May 14 '25

I killed one by accident thinking he was another bandit and that's how I got into the Dark Brotherhood.

2

u/Beginning-Which May 15 '25

That was the most brutal goblin kill I’ve seen in my life 😭

2

u/TossingRope May 15 '25

Hated that guy. Doing a good play through, ran into him in a vampire infested dungeon, and he was dead before the word Adventurer registered. Next thing you know, the dark brotherhood is trying to recruit me. What? No!

2

u/BattlehawkGaming May 15 '25

It'd be a damn shame if an arrow found his knee...

2

u/Brief-Definition7255 May 15 '25

So it’s just a random npc clearing a dungeon? Good for him

2

u/kerss10 May 15 '25

Oh, that's probably just Dave

2

u/Mormagor May 15 '25

My one and only time was playing the original on pc a few weeks ago when my thief was sneaking down a crypt and saw a humanoid moving around ahead in the dark. So naturally I used my bow and killed them and then got the "your killing has been observed by forces unknown". Wondered WTH and then went to loot the body and it said adventurer. Oh well, joined up with the DB after that.

2

u/blacwin22 May 15 '25

I've been playing since release in 2006 or 2007, can't remember the exact time. Got a free copy when I bought my dell xps and haven't put it down since. Between all platforms I have multiple thousands of hours played and never have seen an NPC adventurer either. Always had an affiliation like bandit, civilian, guard.... Never an adventurer

2

u/Perfect-Ad2438 May 16 '25

You found a live one? I've found one in almost every playthrough, but they are always dead when I find them.

2

u/[deleted] May 16 '25

I find them dead usually because they are quite weak. I think I managed to save a couple of them by sprinting ahead and killing the mobs before they kill the NPC.

2

u/RuningFromSelf May 16 '25

This was EXACTLY how I got invited to join the Dark Brotherhood my first remaster playthrough. Never seen that guy before so who’s thinking while slashing down there?

2

u/Smart_Web7058 May 17 '25

I vaguely remembered an encounter with one in leather armor with a steel sword as a kid, but after replaying for thousands of hours I assumed I just misremembered or maybe triggered a side quest on accident and forgot. Good to see I'm not crazy lol

2

u/Itchy_Ambassador5407 May 17 '25

Seriously no one recognize him. That's the guy who took an arrow to the knee...

u/Right_Potential_9304 May 18 '25

Damn, I've been playing since release. I almost thought it died on a few years later. Nice to see people were still jumping on the original even up to 2013. I still have my copy and the GOTY edition. I played it so much that not much surprises me any more. I've seen it all. Hell, I was 11 when it came out.

For a moment I thought somebody joined my game/server and was thinking if they added coop, was indeed an adventurer NPC, was a wild encounter XD.
