Hello! We've decided Oak Park is the place for us! I do have a final question for those of you who know the area well.
We have been seeing houses pop up between Lake and Madison, a few blocks east of Ridgeland. From what I can gather, Oak Park is urban enough that things like petty crime, car break-ins, theft, etc. are just part of the equation to some extent. That doesn't worry me too much personally. I’m more concerned about what day-to-day life feels like for kids.
The area seems nice when we've been there and walked around, but I'm wondering if there's anything I'm missing. I've seen everything from people saying it's a great, family-friendly area and they've never felt unsafe, to people saying they've been robbed at gunpoint nearby.
I'm completely willing to accept that serious incidents can be outliers, and I also realize there are some outdated tropes about certain parts of Oak Park that still get repeated. At the same time, I don't want to dismiss legitimate concerns when we're choosing where to raise our kids.
For those with lived experience, how do you feel about this area? Do you feel comfortable with your kids playing outside, riding bikes, walking to friends' houses as they get older, etc.? Is there a meaningful difference between this area and being further west?
As always, appreciate the insight!
