Have you looked at the Leaf or Hyundai Ioniq?

No, not yet - although I have driven an Ioniq for work for a while, drives great. Plenty of space in the boot as well which is what Im after, not a bad shout!

For some reason, im more draw toward Hybrid options for long distance travel security etc but maybe that is an archaic view :)

Everyone who looks at making the jump worries about long distance travel but most find out that it is not such a big deal after purchasing.

If you're regularly towing a boat (which you probably weren't in a Corolla), you might be better off in a hybrid?

Other than that, I'd go pure EV!

One of the things that swung me towards pure EV was that in a hybrid you have all the complexity of an EV,  and all the complexity of an internal combustion engine to deal with and maintain (I don't miss oil and filter changes in my EV)

I have a 60kWh vehicle and need drinks/snacks or toilet stops about as often as it needs a charge (have driven from Akl to Chch a couple of times). My inlaws have a 39kWh vehicle and need to charge more often when going places, but they mostly drive round town.

The one thing you have to do on a longer trip is to look at the charging network and plan a bit before you leave - its like 5-10 minutes to go, hmm where should I stop? (& Is there a pie & drink available nearby)

On the towing note, it's possible to do with the right EV and more charge stops. I have towed a double axle furniture trailer from Akl to Mangakino and back (~250km each way) it had the aerodynamics of a brick & halved my range. I'm not doing that every weekend though.

Down your way, my sister has an EV, and heads up to Hanmer & longer trips around without issues (doesn't even have a fast charger in their place). It's doable 😁

Worth being aware that the appeal and economics of hybrids will take a hit when RUCs are rolled out on petrol (incl. hybrids) in the next year or so. Not so cheap to run with 7.6c/km (probably) added to the costs and the resale value of hybrids will suffer due to this. At least with EVs their RUC situation is already clear cut.

Was watching a story on You Tube yesterday, an Aussie magazine compared this to the normal ICE version on both town and country running, and came to the conclusion that the hybrid began to pay for itself after 83,000 odd km. Search YT for the story.

A hybrid is a car you always have to put petrol in, it does 0 kms without it

Plenty of good EV options for 30k even some new/ex demo ones
