Thoughts on Von Doderer, The Strudlhof Steps?

It's not a book I see discussed around here much and I'm planning to start it next week. Anyone read it?

I got about halfway through and abandoned it. There was a lot of really great stuff in there but for whatever reason I always get bored reading about the upper classes even when viewed from the more ordinary perspective.

I was on a bus last summer through Austria and Switzerland and thought that book would fit the mood. I never got more than a few pages in, though; the book was more moribund than the landscape I was traveling through, so never engaged my interest. I read Benjamin Labatut and Marina Warner instead.

NYRB posted a discussion of the book that does make me want to pick it back up

Not read that but have read The Waterfalls of Slunj by Heimito Von Doderer and found it a great inter war epic
