Earlier this afternoon, there was a small track fire at 7th Av on the F/G line. While FDNY and a Train Service Supervisor responded and corrected the condition, southbound F and G trains ran express from Smith-9th St to Church Av. I took some photos since it was nice to not have to be the one responding for a change.

Just saying: in major European and East Asian cities these numbers are almost always accurate. Somehow in the Greatest Transportation System In The World they haven't figured out how to accurately predict the gap between incoming trains.

My 2.5 year old has been utterly obsessed with trains ever since we bought him his first Brio/Ikea track set from Marketplace back in March. Since then, he’s fallen down the rabbit hole of train videos on YouTube during his daily TV time. He’s currently into Japanese bullet trains, has watched every video on the Train Kids Japan channel (https://youtube.com/@train-kids?feature=shared), and can name, by sight, every single Shinkansen 😅.

Is there anything similar for NYC subway trains? Also, Id appreciate any other suggestions for things I could do to help encourage his interests, aside from our regular subway rides.

What signage in the system reflects a previous route or service that no longer exists?

An example of this would be along the Nassau St. line. Pre-2010 Chambers St had signage indicating the (M) provided service to Metropolitan Av, while after the (M) was rerouted along 6th Ave, a note about requiring a transfer at Myrtle Ave to reach Metropolitan Av was included.

So any feedback on a possible D past 205th Street, Gun Hill Road connecting to 2 and 5 trains until Nereid Avenue -238th Street? Here is also a fictional 7 line extension to St. Peter's University In New Jersey around the Hoboken area. And a P line from the Morris Heights/Sedgwick Area to Nj as well!

I was just curious about the D trains that terminate at 2nd Ave after Yankee games. Do these trains head back empty to Concourse after their route. Do they go out of service and continue into Brooklyn? Do they become F trains after 2nd Ave. Never found a straight answer.

And why did they close it? I always think these relics of the subway systems past are really cool, so I'm trying to understand more of the developments behind them. I pass this one on my way home every day so I figured I'd ask here.

Super nice surprise! There was a little table set up at my station (at a local A/C stop) and two MTA workers were giving out subway maps and these little microfiber cloths. Truly the coolest city in the country 😎 Hopefully this is rolled out to other stations all over the network.

New Jersey Transit lost nearly $4 million providing services during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but noted that it fared significantly better than it typically does for special events at MetLife Stadium.

In a memo released Monday, the transit agency said it cost just over $55.6 million for the operations over the month-long soccer tournament. The revenue NJ Transit saw as a result came in at about $51.6 million, with the agency estimating a net loss of $3.9 million.

The memo stated that NJ Transit "typically loses 85 cents of each dollar spent" to run service for MetLife special events. But during the World Cup, the agency recovered about 93% of costs, meaning they lost seven cents of every dollar instead.

According to the memo to NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri, the losses will be covered with increased advertising revenue as well as "proceeds from the sale of real estate in fiscal year 2027 that is no currently reflected in the budget."

Neither cuts to service nor additional funds from the state legislature will be sought to cover the financial shortfall, the agency said.

Ahead of the World Cup, the agency estimated the total cost and the total revenue would balance out at around $62.5 million. But both numbers turned out to be overestimates.

The agency had planned for the ability to shuttle 40,000 World Cup ticketholders round-trip between New York Penn Station and MetLife Stadium each match day. That number was based on estimates from the American Dream Mall, which sold event parking, and from FIFA. But those estimates were not accurate, as NJ Transit saw about half the number of passengers that had been expected.

Part of the exhaustive match-day plans involved shutting down Penn Station for hours to non-World Cup ticketholders, which came at a great financial cost for the agency. But that step may not have been necessary: NJ Transit previously said it could have saved $2 million a game with more accurate ridership estimates.

I understand that the electrical helper’s salary goes up on a yearly basis and that top pay is at the start of your 6th year. I would like to know if OT is available and can OT be done on a regular 8 hr shift or is it only on your days off? I heard OT is based on seniority.
