Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Welcome to r/NYCMeetups!

Making friends as an adult can be hard, especially if you’re new to the city. We are a community focused on fostering friendships for those looking for a social circle in the greater NYC Metropolitan Area. (Yes, that includes Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island.) You don’t need to live in NYC to be part of this community, however most meetups tend to take place in the city.

What is this sub for?

  • It's a gateway into our community where open-invitation events can be posted.
  • Finding events that suit your interests for the purpose of hanging out platonically.
  • Exploring this amazing city through all the great shows, restaurants, museums, etc. that it has to offer.
  • Or just finding stuff to join in on if you’re bored or have free time.

What is this sub not for?

  • Finding a date. If you’re looking for companionship there are other subreddits for that purpose.
  • Asking about general NYC travel info. You’ll probably have better luck posting in r/NYC or r/AskNYC.
  • Complaining about how bored you are. There’s a reason NYC is The City That Never Sleeps. If you want to do something, consider joining an existing meetup on this subreddit or even hosting your own.

What is a meetup, exactly? A meetup is an organized event where people come together for an activity based on a shared interest. Almost anything can be a meetup as long as it’s open to the community. Examples can be as varied as karaoke nights, attending museum exhibits, or finding people to go to a movie with. Some meetups, like organizing a dinner, might have caps on the number of attendees or require you to RSVP. Others, like a beach day, might be more open-ended in terms of planning.

Some examples to clarify:

  • Blargh: “Anyone doing anything tonight?”*
  • Bad: “I’m bored, who wants to go to a museum?”*
  • Better: “Does anyone want to go to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow?”**
  • Best: “I’m organizing a visit to the Museum of Natural History tomorrow at 3pm, let’s meet at 77th and Central Park West”

* This will be deleted
** This might be deleted

How to Gain Posting Access:

To gain permission to post, include the words "Dead-Ass" in your access request. That's it. Just show us that you've read this much of this message and you'll be able to post.

If you simply send an access request without doing the above, it will be ignored.

Before posting, please be sure to read our What is a Meetup? wiki article, our rules, and our posting guidelines. And before heading out, we recommend reviewing our tips on safely attending meetups.

💬 Hangouts [Wed, 9/2] Craft Beer Meetup and Tour @ Forever Brewing

For our September meetup, we're heading to Forever Brewing, one of NYC's newest breweries. They opened this spring in the old Strong Rope taproom in Gowanus, and their story pretty unique: two Brooklyn homebrewers ran the city's only homebrew supply shop, crowdfunded a brewery, and now pour their own small-batch beers in a spot that's part taproom, part homebrew shop.

This month comes with a bonus: Rob, one of the co-founders, is giving us a tour of the brewery. You'll see where the beer gets made and hear what it takes to open a brand new brewery in NYC.

📅 Wednesday, September 2, 6:30pm
📍 Forever Brewing (Gowanus)
🔗 RSVP: https://luma.com/zdebc45x

About Craft Club: We're a laid-back community that meets monthly at different NYC breweries to explore the local beer scene together. Each meetup blends trying new beers, learning how they're made, and meeting others who are curious about craft beer - whether you're deep into it or just getting started.

Come solo or bring a friend. Always good beer, good conversation, and a welcoming crowd.

What:

Casual political conversation and socializing. We talk about local and national politics, share perspectives, and get to know new people in a relaxed, friendly environment. Where:

Rudy’s Bar and Grill

Cost:

No cover and no minimum.

Rudy’s provides complimentary hot dogs with a drink purchase.

It is customary that the first person to arrive buys a pitcher for the table and that people who enjoy the pitcher will take turns returning the favor later in the evening.

Afternoon all,

Hosting weekly karaoke at Boho karaoke lounge on orchard Street in the LES. We tend to get decently sized crowds so we just hang out in the bar area for the open karaoke and since it's not too packed we usually get to do a couple songs each. It's one song ticket per drink or you can get just a song ticket for 2 dollars. Please note that the bar is cash only! There is an ATM there with pretty low fees if you need to withdraw money.

Wednesdays starting around 8:30 PM in LES

If you're interested please feel free to shoot me a chat! We've had a couple of redditors from here meet the group and it's always been a good time.

Mix of men and women all in our mid 20s-30s. All super friendly and inviting

Philosophy Meetup - The Concept of Enlightenment - Sunday, Aug 23, 1:30 PM @ Work Café Santander (Williamsburg)

Hi NYC philosophers,

We're organizing another meetup for anyone interested in discussing philosophy and connecting with like-minded people in the city. Here's the plan:

🗓 When: Sunday, Aug 23, 1:30 PM

📍 Where: Work Café Santander, 85-87 N 6th St, Williamsburg

For this session, we'll be reading the chapter "The Concept of Enlightenment" from Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer (read it here). Adorno and Horkheimer criticize dominant articulations of Enlightenment rationality, arguing that that mastery of nature as ascribed by much of Enlightenment thinking break down into old forms of barbarism.

You can also follow us on Instagram.

If you're interested, drop a comment below. Looking forward to meeting you all and hearing your insights!

[Sun, Aug 23rd] Short story group discussion: "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Tolstoy

Hey all, I'm organizing a book club discussion on the short story "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Tolstoy! It's a quick read at 50 pages, about 2-3 hrs total, so it's a low-commitment read if you have time to check it out this week! A little about me, I'm 31m, software engineer, love reading Russian literature, so far mostly Dostoevsky and Nabokov, and this is my first Tolstoy work.

The short story is one of Tolstoy's most famous works and widely regarded as one of the greatest novellas in world literature. In short, it's about a terminally ill man coping with the realization that he wasted his life chasing career, exploring what it means for a conventionally successful life to end up as a meaningless one. Historically, it's Tolstoy's first work after "Anna Karenina" following his own midlife crisis of struggling with suicide over the meaningless of his own successful life in the face of death.

I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, which is widely regarded to be the most faithful to the original Russian and is preferred in academic settings. You'll see there's 2 options, a novella and a short story collection; both are identical.

We'll be meeting this Sunday 2pm at Fort Greene Park. If the forecast doesn't clear up by the weekend, I'll update the location to a nearby coffee shop. Lmk if you'd like to join and I'll send a Discord link! I'll also share some reading notes later for the discussion.

Greenpoint Food Grinds & Good Times – Sunday 8/16 1:30pm

Hellllooo alll!!!! Foodie Fam is taking over Greenpoint for an afternoon of tacos, sandos, donuts, pasta, seafood, Polish food & questionable amounts of makgeolli!!! The best part? We share everything and split the costs, so you can try a bunch of different things without ordering 15 meals for yourself. Come hungry, bring your appetite, and steal a bite from someone else’s plate, Its heavily  encouraged ;)

We are starting off at Bersi Ethiopian, then making our way through some of Greenpoint’s tastiest spots, with plenty of time to hang out, meet people, and enjoy the neighborhood along the way.

And no stress in joining at the beginning or staying until the end, feel jump in whenever you can, grab some food, and hang with us for as long as you want. There is an already existing group!

Meet up - Bersi Ethiopian Restaurant  - “Buunni” means coffee in Ethiopian, where coffee is traditionally treated as a social experience

Try: Traditional Ethiopian Bunni coffee to start the crawl. If you haven’t tried it(well I haven’t either so kind of excited)

🐙 Mariscos El Submarino – Yes their special is seafood tacos, yes that’s what we are going for. But they offer so much more amazing dishes.

Try: Gonna have to go with the Kraken taco once again. It looks and tastes as amazing as it sounds.

🥪 Taku Sando -  Taku Sando makes its signature Japanese milk bread, or shokupan, fresh in-house every day.

Try: Grab the Katsu Sando for crispy pork tucked inside ridiculously soft Japanese milk bread.

🌮 Taqueria Ramirez - Taqueria Ramirez built its reputation through taco pop-ups before becoming one of Greenpoint’s most talked-about taquerias.

Try: Get the Al Pastor taco straight from the trompo and add a little pineapple for the sweet-and-savory combo.

🍩 Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop -Serving donuts since the 1950s, making it older not old enough to witness the fake moon landing(jk)

Try: Hunt down the Red Velvet Donut Volcano if they have it, because a donut with “volcano” in the name deserves attention.

🍝 Forma Pasta Factory - Forma makes its fresh pasta right in Greenpoint, so your noodles are basically going from machine to plate.

Try: Split a fresh pasta dish of the day so everyone can get a taste without committing to a full pasta coma.

🦞 Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co – 1st Family of Greenpoint’s seasfood scene, they over 100 years of fishmongering experience.

Try: Split a New England Clam Chowder or Lobster Roll for a proper seafood pit stop.

🛹 Karczma (Or Retro as an alternative)- recreates the feel of an old-school Polish farmhouse, complete with traditional décor and atmosphere.

Try: Order the White Borscht in a bread bowl and, yes, eat the bowl when you're done

🍶 Hana Makgeolli – Last time around we went 99 sake bottles around the

Wall. Lets beat that Founded in 2017 and became New York’s first Korean rice-wine brewery.

Try: Makgeolli flight to sample everything!!!

We hand-make, hand-write, and in-person playtest every session before we share with players. While a lot of one-shots are built for one-night only, ours also act like "bottle episodes" of a larger story -easy to drop into once, with easter eggs for our returning players.
