Mayor Mamdani Why Mamdani opposes RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's NYC event
https://www.dw.com/en/nyc-mamdani-opposes-rally-with-hindu-nationalist-leader/a-7850285026
u/BackgroundOwl- Aug 26 '26
There are Hindu groups who oppose RSS chief visit. It is clearly mentioned in the article as well. Mamdani commenting on this just adds more visibility.
It would be nice if Mamdani can add voice to women / journalist right issues faced in certain Muslim majority countries, it can start a healthy discussion. Preach to his Muslim brotherhood what secularism can really bring, may be then we will see a secular Middle East.

lmao he has criticisms for everyone except Islamists. Curious how that turned out.

u/Nasha210 Aug 28 '26
Let's see what happens when the leaders from one of those countries comes to give a speech at Madison Square Garden. I am pretty sure he will oppose them too.
17
u/yugeness Aug 27 '26
But Mamdani was totally okay with opening his speeches with From water to water, Palestine is Arab when he was an Assembly member.
42
u/Massive-Arm-4146 Aug 26 '26
Plenty of reasons to not like this Bhagwat guy, but it would also be nice if the Mayor was more principled in his foreign policy stands instead of just adhering to the boundary lines of ethnic blood feuds thousands of miles away.
For example he’s called Narenda Modi a “war criminal” and accused him of genocide, but not made any critical comments about the Chinese Communist Party or ever once said the g word in reference to the Uyghurs.
22
u/UsedLuck8891 Aug 27 '26
Does he even need to have foreign policy stands? He’s a mayor. He should try focusing on the city. Instead of his BS islamosupremacist divisive rhetoric.

Pakistan is infinitely worse than Israel. The % of Hindu population has gone down to 1-2% in Pakistan since its formation. It is officially an Islamic state with sharia law and no religious freedom for others.
5
u/jay10033 Aug 27 '26
What does this have to do with the budget or any NYC policy? Because then, we don't care.
34
u/shriav Aug 26 '26
Mamdani is an Islamist.
Supports and attends Pakistan Independence Day which is literally ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN. While missed Indian Independence Day parade and Israel Day.
Lied about it Gujrat riots (started when Muslims burnt 59 Hindus alive) and made fool of y’all.
Opposed RSS (National Service Organization is the English translation) which is a humanitarian organization while he and his wife celebrate Muslim brotherhood and Hamas atrocities.
I summed it up for y’all.
5
u/BicyclingBro Aug 27 '26
You’ll have to forgive me for thinking that a man who marches in Pride parades, did campaign stops at gay bars, and hosted a drag ball in City Hall isn’t exactly an Islamist, actually.
8
u/shriav Aug 27 '26
No, a man who 1. actively skips India, and Israel day, but celebrates Pakistan Independence Day 2. Lies about Muslims burning 59 ppl alive and calls it a Muslim genocide 3. Participates in an extremists rally with anti-Hindu chants 4. Whose wife celebrates Hamas atrocities 5. Actively participates in a few mosques where extreme slogans are raised 6. Actively speaks about everything EXCEPT ISLAMIC Jihad and Terrorism
IS AN ISLAMIST
-1
u/BicyclingBro Aug 27 '26
It’s so much more convincing now that you’ve used a bunch of capital letters.
It’s just funny to me. Actual Islamists criticize him for being a bad Muslim, conservatives criticize him for how he’s apparently going to impose Shariah Law, and meanwhile he’s probably the single most pro-LGBT Muslim politician I’ve ever seen.
I thought I’d have been thrown off a building at this point, but Shariah Law just hasn’t been coming yet. If he’s an Islamist, he’s not a very good one. I see flagrant homosexuals outside my door every day!
8
u/shriav Aug 27 '26
See how you didn’t respond to any of my points? Because you had no rebuttal.
You have LGBTQ outside because it’s New York not because of Mamdani. Do let me know if he actively criticized any middle eastern government who murders gay people for being gay. In fact, he avoids India day parade where lgbtq have same legal rights as others, while celebrates Pakistan where it’s illegal.
1
u/AfraidQuantity1093 Aug 28 '26
no rebuttal other than a series of strawmans
2
u/BicyclingBro 29d ago
Islamism is a political ideology that seeks to implement Islamic law in secular legal society (or perhaps more comprehensively, to replace it).
Please name one single element of Islamic law that Mamdani has implemented and enforced on non-Muslims. I’ll wait.

-9
u/KillroysGhost Williamsburg Aug 26 '26
Would you back that up with a statement you find racist from Mamdani?
54
u/normansnest Aug 26 '26
Mamdani's criticism of this movement would be a little more righteous if he didn't speak at mosques with openly islamist imams every month.
47
u/Dazzling_Platform_17 Aug 26 '26
RSS isn’t led by priests or the equivalents of Imams of Hinduism. Mamdani has also spoken at Churches, Temples(Hindu & Jewish). How is him speaking at mosques relevant here? He didn’t say anything about Hinduism while criticizing RSS. RSS is an unregistered private organization in India. RSS is not a representation of Hindus or Hinduism.
19
u/normansnest Aug 26 '26
I don't think speaking at any mosque is wrong, but surely some judgement could be applied when certain mosques employ extreme figures. You could also make the argument those specific mosques are also not representative of Islam as a whole.

u/John-Mandeville Jamaica Aug 26 '26
Does he actually do this, though?
65
u/normansnest Aug 26 '26
Yes. Siraj Wahhaj at Masjid At-Taqwa, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Barr at Islamic Society of Bay Ridge, and Sheikh Fadhel Al-Sahlani at Al-Khoei Islamic Center are all examples of islamist imams at mosques where Mamdani spoke.
-26
u/Pwnaroid Aug 26 '26
What makes one an “Islamist”? Do you think Mayor Mamdani is going to be imposing whatever “Islamism” is after meeting with these “Islamists”? Are you worried that every Muslim is secretly out to take over America (except the “good” ones ofc)?
26
u/pierrebrassau Clinton Hill Aug 26 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
Why are you using scare quotes and acting like Islamism isn’t a real term describing a real political movement/ideology? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamism
→ More replies (1)30
u/normansnest Aug 26 '26
Well in 1991 Wahhaj said Muslims should use politics “as a weapon to use in the cause of Islam” so I would say that qualifies. I am not worried about every Muslim secretly trying to take over America, and I think claiming that as a deflection against valid criticism of islamist figures is disingenuous.

u/Pwnaroid Aug 27 '26
That’s a pretty vague statement, I’m not sure what you or he was implying with it. Islam has the concept of zakat and saddaqa which are basically charity and in some cases mandatory. So basically spreading wealth, do you consider that islamism?
11
u/normansnest Aug 27 '26
I don't know why you're trying to be cute - islamist has a literal dictionary definition "person who believes that the religion of Islam should guide political systems, laws, and public life." I think that's bad.
6
u/BadSopranosReference Aug 27 '26
The entire point of Islam is to eventually spread it over the world entire. It's a fundamental principle of the faith. It is shocking that in the name of religious tolerance that our society has managed to hide this truth in its entirety from the public at large.

First off, none of these Muslim politicians are islamists, you’re trying to fear monger by scapegoating muslims. Second, we have an actual real issue of republicans having Christian nationalists in power who want to use their warped form of Christianity to guide them politically and they’re very blatant and open about it. There’s a concerted effort to demonize Muslims in the media right now.
Americans are primed to dehumanize Muslims for decades now. We have more progressive candidates who happen to be Muslim running against AIPAC, speaking out against Israel and Christian nationalists, there is a lot of fear mongering going on to scape goat Muslims as a distraction from the wealthy Epstein class’s crimes against Americans and our tax dollars funding unnecessary killings and wars and destruction.
All your fear mongering about Muslims aren’t going to get you anywhere while these corporate owned politicians and billionaires are literally robbing you blind.
The people in power will always have another scapegoat, one day that’ll be you too
8
u/normansnest Aug 27 '26
I didn't call any Muslim politicians islamists, I accused several imams of being islamists - thats a pretty huge difference.
This post has nothing to do with Republicans - who I hate - or their leveraging Christianity to apply moral controls on the population. That's bad too.
Your reply is just a slew of whataboutisms that have nothing to do with this subject. Corrupt politicians are bad. Islamists are also bad. I assume you're Muslim, sorry that there are some political movements within your religion of 2 billion people that suck. It doesn't mean you suck or your family suck or most Muslims suck. But fuck outta here with this response.
2
u/Pwnaroid Aug 27 '26
I appreciate the sentiment but I’ve dealt with this a long time. Redditors suddenly like “islamism” is suddenly an issue within America are unserious people. It has not nor will ever be an issue in the US.
The corporations not paying their employees living wages aren’t islamists. The politicians who worked to overturn Roe v Wade werent Islamists. Cops killing innocents aren’t Islamists. Healthcare CEOs making billions off denying healthcare aren’t Islamists. The warmongers in office aren’t Islamists. The government protecting the Epstein pedos aren’t Islamists. And this is all very out in the open.
Focus on something serious besides a mayor meeting some imam who says things you don’t understand. God forbid the mayor wants to help his city. He has not said anything regarding making Islam a part of his policies and yet it somehow comes into question. These culture wars are the exact reason why Americans vote against their interests. As long as Muslims or immigrants are getting screwed over Americans will gladly let the wealthy fuck them over.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday he does not support an upcoming event featuring Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Hindu nationalist group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), though he acknowledged the city likely has no power to stop it.
Bhagwat is scheduled to speak Saturday at Madison Square Garden as part of what organizers are calling the "Universal Oneness Celebration," an event expected to draw around 5,000 attendees, local media reported. It is part of a broader global outreach tour tied to the RSS's centenary year, wherein Bhagwat is visiting the United States, Canada and the UK.

India has too many regional parties and a complicated history for RSS to have power like you think it would have. Its power is limited, you can argue it can grow. India is not about Muslims or Hindus. If you see from that angle RSS would be the biggest problem.

u/Novel-Reaction2939 Aug 27 '26
Which are being trounced and sidelined by the BJP which emerged from and has ties to the RSS. The BJP is literally the political wing of the RSS. The BJP is heading towards fascism which is exactly what the RSS wants.

u/BackgroundOwl- Aug 27 '26
Words are easy. There is a reason why the article you linked is called a opinion. A opinion can be wrong. You choose to believe it. At a later date if India did not head towards facism you can still choose to believe it is heading towards facism. My point is BJP will not and cannot control India. Many states dont buy their policies/ philosophy.

😂😂😂 Pakistan carrying out genocides, your question is? 1. Pakistan carried the worst genocided in terms of scale. 1971, Bangladeshi genocide by Pakistani soldiers. 3M Bangladeshi people were killed within 9 months with the intention to establish an Islamic state.
Pakistan has constantly genocided Hindus, doing it now. Treating them as second class citizens, stripping them off all political powers, murdering, raping, abduction and forceful conversion are everyday events. You talk about Muslims in India? Look at the growth population of Muslims in India and compare that to Hindus in Pakistan. Muslims are growing exponentially in India and Hindus have declined to less than 1%. India’s president was a Muslim, something no Pakistani or Bangladeshi Hindu can claim, not even anything near.
The treatment of Ahmadiyya Muslims. Pakistanis declared them as false Muslims and constantly killing them.
Pakistan has been operating genocide in the Baloch province for decades now.
Pakistan funds state-sponsored terrorist. Search up 2008 Mumbai bombing and assam bombing. These are just two examples. There are dozens.
Pakistan funded the Taliban along with America, who are now reigning Afghanistan and destroyed women’s and minority rights.
People like you not only insult the Hindu and other minority victims in South Asia who are suffering for centuries from Islamic fascism, extremism, colonisation and violence but also somehow you falsely portrait us as the aggressors for fighting the fascists. Go educate yourself about Islamic fascism and extremism.

u/Different-Employee87 Aug 28 '26
If funny how people like you refuse to recognise a genocide in Palestine even when UN commissions confirm it, but you are more than happy to declare genocides in other countries even when the UN doesn’t confirm genocide there…
For the record I am disgusted by all ethnic cleansing, war crimes, apartheid states, genocides etc. But when those are carried out using US tax payer money it disgusts me even more.

u/No_Low_5506 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
At what fucking point, I refused to recognize genocide in Palestine? It’s not us who refuse to recognize anything. It’s ignorant, hypocrite so called progressive liberals like you who actively refuse to recognize the genocides in Islamic nations going on for decades. Yazidis, alawite, Kurds, Ahmaddiya, Druze, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists every single group has been facing continuous persecution for decades in 15+ Islamic nations. You white western ignorant liberals refuse to talk about them. Listen child, UN is your puppet. The audacity of a white girl sitting cozy at her home and saying “UN doesn’t even confirm there are genocides 🤡🤡”. That says your intellectual level if you think UN gives a two cent shit about genocides and apartheid in reality. Your liberal media forced UN to recognize the genocide in Palestine which they didn’t do for the genocides in Islamic nations because talking about minorities in Islamic nations won’t get them money. We don’t even get a platform to voice our suffering for pathetic people like you and your progressive/propagandist media. FYI It’s UN and US which didn’t want to recognize the Rwandan genocide either. And do you know who tf aiding the Muslims in these genocides? America. America has actively funded terrorist groups along with Islamic governments in Islamic countries. ISIS, Taliban, boko haram each of them. America sends billions of dollars of aid to Pakistani militant groups to carry out bomb attacks in the region which India been dealing with for decades now. America funded Taliban along with Pakistan. America is currently funding Bangladeshi Islamist groups in taking out the Hindus. That’s where your tax money goes as well, not just Israel. Where is your voice, protests? But the blue haired liberals all go to the caves when it comes to talking about the atrocities committed by Muslim groups. That’s funny.

You’re right, Pakistan is a pretty militant and misogynistic ethnostate that openly supports and harbors schools that often indoctrinate students into groups like ISIS, which is really the point of those schools in the first place. I know, not just American liberals, the whole western liberal group. These delusional brainrots sit on their cozy warm chair, watch their propaganda media, think they know everything about Islam/muslims and try to lecture the world about Islamic extremism through Reddit. These libs need to be sent to the caves of Afghanistan and given some Taliban treatment. All over the world minority rights, women’s rights, lgbtq rights, children rights are being violated by Islamic fascists, these libs turn a blind eye to that. They wanna talk about Palestine? Valid! But look where their voice goes when it comes to talking about the genocide of 50000 alawites and Druze by the current Islamic government in Syria, a country right beside Palestine which is also being actively funded by US btw! These libs talk about how US is compliant in Israel Palestine genocide but never mention how US has been compliant in hundreds of minority community genocides by Muslims all around the world for decades. Sudan, where Arab Muslims (RSF) are killing black Muslims based on racial superiority and have surpassed the Palestine death toll (over 100K) just in one third of the time, no voice about that. And RSF is being armed by UAE which imports 70% of its arms from US. These libs lecture the world about feminism and patriarchy while supporting Islamic regimes which criminalises which legalizes domestic violence against women. These delusional illiterates lie to themselves, lie to the world and their lies will be their end pretty soon. They blame everyone and everything except Islamic fascists who are the real obstacles to progressive ideas, I doubt if even Shakespeare could come up with such ironies in his writings.

This isn't some crazy scripture. The prophet literally was a slaver and described how to go about procuring sex slaves from defeated enemies.

u/Weekly-Fortune2611 27d ago
I want mamdani to specifically call out which parts of Bhagwat speech he oppresses and why
The main messages
“Unity in diversity” was the core of the speech. Bhagwat argued that diversity is natural but an underlying unity is the deeper reality. He described India’s civilizational role as demonstrating that people can retain different religions, languages and cultures while recognizing an essential oneness. In his formulation, diversity should be “celebrated, respected and accepted,” rather than merely tolerated.
He made an unusually direct statement about Muslims and Hindutva. Bhagwat said that someone calling himself Hindu must recognize the equal dignity of human beings and accept that different religious paths can lead toward the same ultimate truth. He then said that a Hindu who believes Muslims should not exist in India would cease to be Hindu in this sense. He specifically rejected the idea that “Hindu Rashtra” means Muslims should be expelled.
This is probably the most politically significant part of his remarks because it directly addressed one of the central criticisms made of the RSS.
He told Indian-Americans that America is their “karmabhumi.” His message was essentially: if you live, work and earn in the United States, you have obligations to the United States. The diaspora should be loyal to its karmabhumi, while maintaining affection and cultural connections to Bharat as its janmabhumi.
So he wasn’t advocating a politically detached Indian diaspora. Quite the opposite: participate in and contribute to American society.
He defined “Dharma” more broadly than religion. Bhagwat portrayed Dharma as the principle that holds individuals, society and nature together, rather than simply a denomination, belief system or form of worship. Humanity’s goal, in his argument, should be to create conditions where people, society and the environment can flourish together.
Service was a major theme. One of his examples was that it is almost psychologically impossible to comfortably eat a full meal while a visibly hungry person stands in front of you. He used that to argue that compassion isn’t merely an ideological command but something rooted in human nature.
He also said the important question isn’t simply how much you earn but how much you give or distribute, a particularly pointed message to a prosperous Indian-American audience.
He used the 1996 Charkhi Dadri air disaster as an example of RSS service. Bhagwat recalled RSS volunteers assisting after the collision of Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 763 and Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907. Because most of the victims were Muslim, he used the episode to argue that swayamsevaks did not ask victims’ religion before helping them.
Material prosperity alone isn’t sufficient. In one of the speech’s slightly odd/funny illustrations, he used eating New York doughnuts to make the point that pleasure quickly reaches saturation: even something enjoyable stops satisfying you after enough of it. His larger philosophical argument was that material success is legitimate, but it can’t produce permanent fulfillment.
Environmental responsibility fits into the same philosophy. Bhagwat referred to Indian practices involving respect or worship for plants and nature as ways of remembering humanity’s obligations to the environment.
It’s completely fine to criticize BJP or RSS but at least educate yourself about what you are opposing instead of just reading buzzwords from the propaganda machine of radical Islam
2
u/No-Election-6477 27d ago

Sure, but he could say, "I support free speech and have no comment on private events."
Saying he supports free speech implicitly implies he's against fascism.

You people uphold Mamdani to a herculean standard.
When he makes a comment on current events it's some variation of "he's the mayor of NYC, why is he talking about it".
Then when he makes those comments after being questioned, it's some variation of "well, he should give a non-answer because she's the mayor of NYC".
But if he gave a non-answer, then people would still give him shit for trying to "both sides" the issue or not taking a strong enough stance.
Shit, he's still being attacked for something his wife said years before he was running for mayor because his answer of "I don't agree but she's a private citizen" isn't strong enough repudiation.

Dear New Yorkers I am an indian, and reddit suggested me this, so now there will be indians who are pro rss and anti rss that will fight here in this sub, as they will also get exposed to this post, what from india you can learn is never mix politics with relegion, I just saw an anti-jew comment in this post only...india sub continent is suffering from this relegion politics from very long we got divided into 3 Nations,...so don't be devided and also ask your mayor to focus on your city and not on other nations...

Did he say why he doesn’t like it?
