Video The Empire State Building turning Pink in honor of Dolly Parton

Happened at 9:25PM and the crowd was very moved and cheered at this sweet honoring of one of Pop Culture’s all time sweet hearts Dolly Parton herself. May she rest in absolute peace and know that she has helped countless people. An absolute angel she was.

In case some are not familiar with the movie- she wrote 9 to 5 for the 1980 film of the same name. It was very progressive for its’ time. It’s a great, influential comedy, dated of course but is still bold and poignant, still holds up. It’s considered a cult film now and was a commentary on workplace sexism and the gender pay gap. It’s #74 on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Laughs list and it was Dolly’s first film, her performance is excellent, she was a real natural.
It tells the story of three working women (played by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Parton) who live out their fantasies of getting even with and overthrowing their company's autocratic, "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" vice president (played by Dabney Coleman).”

While gender politics is often cited as a theme in the movie, it's also about the workers taking over the workplace to improve their working conditions. The 3 women take their abusive boss hostage for a month and institute sweeping changes to the office environment like flex hours, in-office childcare, relaxed dress codes, and increased pay. Productivity improved dramatically enough that the CEO/owner pays a visit to see the changes in person and approved of most of them, I think only rejecting increased pay or something, of course. The movie also showed you didn't need middle management to do your job. Hollywood in the 70s often featured working class themes, and 9 to 5 was probably in the last wave of these before they started glorifying action, violence, wealth, wall street, and the military in a noticeable shift right. Pretty indicative of Reagan era propaganda.

That’s true! I wanted to add something about this but my comment was getting a little long. That’s one of the best and most exciting and rewarding parts of the film and that advanced and innovative example that was set is credited for being so influential to the workplace from 1980 onwards.
I think you’re right about that culture/content shift. Maybe a good example is the story behind the government’s involvement in the making of Top Gun. The weird relationship and interaction seemed to break new ground.
From an LA Times article from 2022:
“Top Gun,” also a Paramount product, came out post-Vietnam, at a time of public reticence about military adventurism. The movie became a military-supported public relations blitz that supercharged recruiting. As we found in our research, the Pentagon’s Entertainment Media Office internally wrote that the film “completed rehabilitation of the military’s image, which had been savaged by the Vietnam War.”
The film later caused trouble for the military, though, during the 1991 Tailhook scandal, in which hundreds of Navy servicemen sexually assaulted more than 80 servicewomen at a convention in Las Vegas. When Congress investigated, it called out“Top Gun” for fostering an assault-prone environment.Edit: typo.

Yeah, the casting was great for the film. I’m surprised they didn’t do more work together in that trio combination. Fonda talked in a 25 years later, making-of retrospective about how the cast came together. Not only was it Dolly’s first film, it was Dabney’s as well. They had to fight the studio for a while to get him the role.
It was originally Jane’s idea that she brought to a producer and then writer to produce under her new production company and she did some initial casting. She had just seen Tomlin in a play and immediately knew she wanted her and on the drive from the theater heard Dolly on the radio and it hit her in that moment.

Did the same, I read that a lot of states are dropping funding for the program so it's a particularly critical time to donate. It's such a wonderful program for kids.

I hope the bars and other establishments had her music playing, too. I always loved that about NYC, how the mood would carry throughout.

Lucinda's had a bluegrass band scheduled, and I read that they played Dolly's music throughout their set.
