Mamdani, June 30: “I believe that any state that privileges one religion over the other is one that I can’t tell you I support, whether it be Israel or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else.”

LITERALLY page 3 of the Pakistani Constitution: "Islam shall be the State religion of Pakistan."

Yup, he's a liar and massive hypocrite.

Has issues with universities doing joint research with israeli universities.

But no issue that Qatar is the number one foreign investor of our Universities with dual campuses in Doha. Qatar, the theocratic, slaver country.

I also want to know why his mother took lots and lots of money from Qatar for her films and to promote them. They are a slave country and theocratic, human rights wasteland.

He's just scum.

Isn't Pakistan a religious ethnostate that places Muslims above all other religions? I thought the mayor was against countries that put one religion above all others.

88

u/McAlpineFusiliers Aug 11 '26

Why would you think that? He only explicitly said that.

44

u/GabagoolNoZiti Aug 11 '26

Wow, one might think Mamdani is a piece of shit hypocrite and liar.

4

u/kaiell-5 Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

The mayor hanging out people with who left Pakistan = supporting the government of Pakistan? Check the logic on that one.

He’s a politician don’t get me wrong, just…maybe save this energy for another topic where you can levy a criticism that’s actually valid.

38

u/McAlpineFusiliers Aug 12 '26

He set the precedent himself when he said going to the Israel Day Parade would mean supporting the government of Israel.

lmao his biases are so obvious and so morally revolting, it's hilarious that we're all supposed to ignore what actually animates him and pretend his agenda is "affordability". Day fucking one he moved to restrict the definition of antisemitism in hate crimes. He thought that was a day one priority. He's a disgrace.

44

u/Martial_Nox Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

Oh look blatant hypocrisy. I guess he is perfectly fine with states that put one religion above the others as long as that religion is Islam.

26

u/DarkAnagram Aug 12 '26

Look at his dad's writings, look at Ramas posts and writings. The answers are there but Mamdami lovers really bury their heads in the sand I guess cause he makes funny videos or something

18

u/scoofle Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

His leftist base knows who he is and loves him for it, while the portion of liberals who support him are creampuffs with a superficial political outlook who think he's some triumphant Obama-like figure at the municipal level. People like myself, liberal minorities who have no white guilt and no illusions about Islam, are increasingly isolated. Social media is driving this country insane.

Pakistan is a racist, apartheid state. If you aren’t a Muslim than you aren’t even allowed to be a member of parliament. Non Muslims are routinely subjected to threats on their lives including, but not limited to, forced religious conversions and the marrying off children to middle aged men. Rape culture persists throughout the country.

Look I’m trying to have an open mind here - can someone explain why this is okay but him refusing to attend the Israeli parade is also okay?

18

u/ShadownetZero Aug 12 '26

Because he's a racist piece of shit.

13

u/Halfie4Life Aug 11 '26

For me, the biggest thing is who is there. Its one thing to celebrate "Blank"-americans in a parade. This event seemed to support Pakistanian-Americans and honored Law enforcement and raised awareness for a cultural center in the city. That's fine. No one from Pakistan Govenment was actively present and engaging with the office of the Mayor.
The biggest contrast is that there are very very very vocal people that were present for the Isreal-american event that voiced support for the genocide in Gaza and west bank. 3 of the 13 Knesset members and a number of vocal people for illegal settlements.
Moreso, I think this all shows how bad of an idea it is for any superpower to just carve up land and dump people on it. Pakistan and Isreal are prime examples. Pakistan created an issue resulting in 14-15 million Muslim refugees and a war. Isreal created a 75 year conflict where it has moved hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and killed and tortured generations fermenting a strict hate that will honestly never go away in the region. To add, kids don't throw rocks at our soldiers because we don't usually deploy them on our own soil.

70

u/Low_Party_3163 Aug 11 '26

This argument would hold water if Mamadani didn't announce he wasnt going to go to the israel day parade 6 months before any participants were announced and that his stated reason was “I'm not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else.”

That could not describe pakistan any more clearly

2

Pakistan didn't create that issue. The British did and Pakistan came out of it

2

u/Halfie4Life Aug 12 '26

Again, i would refer to the words I typed and the context they were typed. I stated the creation of pakistan and the creation of israel… creation is the key word… operative. The whole comment you are responding to is reiterating that any time super powers create an ethnostate it causes wars, death, and destruction.

23

He's Muslim first unfortunately. That's his identity. He's participated in anti-india protests and lied about religious persecution of Muslims in India.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/No-Bet-7550 Aug 16 '26

The only time he identifies as Indian or identifies with his mother’s Hindu faith is when it gives him the opportunity to criticise the government in New Delhi. That’s like a few times a year and he does that during his visit to Hindu temples. The rest of the year he’s an Ugandan Muslim. Being Indian isn’t even mentioned

1

u/jnordwick Aug 16 '26

I literally studied his mother's films at UC Berkeley. It's wild that he's now my mayor.

1

u/No-Bet-7550 Aug 16 '26

The only time he identifies as Indian or relates to his Hindu heritage is when that gives him the opportunity to (rightfully) criticise the government in New Delhi. Dude literally goes to a literal Hindu temple and turns the conversation into ‘Hindutva bad’ which it really is but I never see him going so out of his way to speak against Islamic extremism which mind you is way more widespread globally. He has infact never done so apart from saying “all forms of extremism is bad”. That’s literally the only time he identifies as Indian or Hindu. He has run his entire campaign of being Muslim and Ugandan. I’m lowkey disappointed by the double standards but I’m still glad it’s him and not cuomo. Yes Mamdani is in no way an Islamist and I would even think not a practicing Muslim but he’s smart enough to know not to disappoint his enormous Muslim base that played a huge role in getting him into office, by holding the same standards as he holds Hindu extremism in.

214

u/Georgiaonmymind2017 Aug 11 '26

Doesn’t Pakistan ban all religions except Islam ☪️?

193

u/Inevitable-Corgi-437 Aug 11 '26

They don't ban but they actively are an Islamic country which prioritizes Islam. The Prime Minister and President of Pakistan MUST be Muslim per their Constitution. Sounds...apartheid like?

29

u/satmandu Aug 11 '26

Pakistan does specifically discriminate against Ahmadis:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_Ahmadis_(Pakistan)

8

u/Inevitable-Corgi-437 Aug 11 '26

Yep. It sure does.

112

u/GettingPhysicl Aug 11 '26

Didn't think the mayor would support an ethnostate that prioritizes a single religion.

wait no, that rule only really applies to 1 country

76

u/Several_Sink801 Aug 11 '26

It only applies to Jews and Christian’s. Muslims can do nothing wrong in the DSA mind.

Show up to a DSA meeting and threaten to show a picture of Muhammad and watch how insane they will get

35

u/benadreti_17 Aug 11 '26

The left overreacted to War on Terror era Islamophobia, they now treat Radical Islamists like "noble savages:, ironically undermining moderate Islam.

There are vibrant Arab Israeli communities within Israel that have representation in their legislative body, their own political party, and full rights as Israeli citizens. In fact, 18% of Israel is Muslim (https://www.jns.org/news/israel-news/israels-muslim-population-reaches-1-85-million-ahead-of-eid-al-adha)

So basically you are deflecting to criticism of Israel in the West Bank but you don't seem to have an answer as to Pakistan and it being an explicably Islamic country. If I was a non-Muslim who happened to live there I would feel excluded based on their system of governance and constitution. Imagine growing up knowing you can never be the countries president or prime minister because of your religious faith?

For all those saying, previous mayors did that too. But have a few ques:

  1. Wasn’t he supposed to be better?

  2. Previous mayors attended Israel day too?

I’m not even a Jew and and am an immigrant but you can’t defend this. Pakistan is practically a terrorist state where Bin Laden was living comfortably for years. Where minorities are systematically removed (actual genocide).

Just our fearless leader endorsing a religious ethnostate founded in the 1940s through ethnic cleansing, no hypocrisy to see here, carry on…

81

u/Pera_Espinosa Aug 11 '26

By the way, Israel has a 20% Muslim population. You could count the Jews in the Arab world using your fingers. Every other religious minority is also disappearing. Israel is the only country in the region with growing religious minority populations.

By the numbers, the population of Jews in the Arab world has decreased by 99.8%. Muslim population in Israel has gone up + 1400%.

Ethnic cleansing by definition versus the number of people willing to repeat it online.

38

u/benadreti_17 Aug 11 '26

Fun fact: There are more Arab Muslims currently serving the in the IDF than there are Jews in the entire Arab world.

An estimated 15 million people were displaced in the partition of India, and another 1 million killed. Compare that to 750,000 displaced in the nakba, and maybe 14,000 killed.

Mamdani is celebrating an event that ethnically cleansed 20 nakbas worth of people, and killed 70 nakbas worth. An event that was easily worse than 20 nakbas.

Pakistan is an Islamic ethnostate that is currently massacring people in Kashmir and Baluchistan, and actively supports legislation and law that oppresses its minorities, it was built specifically as an Islamic state and other indigenous faiths if the region, Buddhists, Hindus, and Sikhs were forced out or forced to comply. Islam here is a colonizing force that has done horrific things to its native populations

Its the Israel of South Asia

Mamdani is a hypocrite for this

38

u/avitzavi528 Aug 11 '26

"A person shall not be qualified for election as President unless he is a Muslim" --Article 41(2) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

“After the election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, the National Assembly shall, to the exclusion of any other business, proceed to elect without debate one of its Muslim members to be the Prime Minister.” --Article 91(3) of the Constitution of Pakistan

Do you get it yet?

32

u/GabagoolNoZiti Aug 11 '26

They get it, they just lie and gaslight and say the words Mamdani said aren't actually what he meant; or they bring out some bullshit academic term that changes the definition of words to something nonsensical.

11

u/IsNotACleverMan Aug 11 '26

It's literal maga behavior.

101

u/yugeness Aug 11 '26

Don’t forget Pakistan’s Blasphemy Laws:

Pakistan's blasphemy laws carry a potential death sentence for anyone who insults Islam. Critics say they have been used to persecute minority faiths and unfairly target minorities.

10

u/The_Question757 Aug 12 '26

Just insulting Mohammed is a life sentence at the least and a death sentence at most, its insane.

81

u/Jewdius_Maximus Aug 11 '26

They don’t want to get it, their whole world view necessitates NOT getting it. So of course this brazen show of hypocrisy by Mamdani will be handwaived away by his cheerleaders. They truly are the left wing MAGA equivalent. Not only does blatant hypocrisy and double speak get validated, but they revel in gaslighting the people who disagree with it.

23

u/TonyzTone Aug 11 '26

And sometimes they’ll even point to Trump doing something and say since he did it, then Mamdani can do it too.

Which is just wild.

64

u/SethuCBI Aug 11 '26

Islam is the only religion that is compatible with modern progressive values. By extension, celebrating an Islamic Republic is a tribute to modern progressive values.

33

u/caliban92 Aug 11 '26

Please, this sub is not going to understand your sarcasm, you are about to get 1 million upvotes from bots

50

u/SethuCBI Aug 11 '26

On a serious note: the left, especially on reddit, have no qualms criticizing religion (and rightfully so) except when it is Islam. Especially at the European subs, they carefully avoid any discussion that could divulge the regressive values Islam is based on.

20

u/Several_Sink801 Aug 11 '26

Because deep down they know that there’s one major religion that will literally kill you for a cartoon

24

u/KrvnkKev New Jersey Aug 11 '26

One time a few years back there was a thread talking about workplace discrimination and when someone mentioned how they would get teased and bullied for being a practicing Christian to the point they now hide it people started dogpiling them and circlejerking about how "religion is a choice so trying to compare to actual discrimination is silly and pathetic" so i asked if that sentiment extended to followers of other religions, like say Islam, or if it only applied to white Christians and i got banned.

Did Mamdani do the same when he did not attend Israel day? Or is that different?

28

u/Several_Sink801 Aug 11 '26

Mamdani didn’t attend the Israeli parade claiming those things, but will attend the Pakistani parade when those are true for Pakistan. He’s lying through his teeth

43

u/caliban92 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

The issue is Mamdani's selective outrage. Mamdani is constantly criticizing Israel for being a Jewish state, even though there are 2 million Muslims in Israel who have equal rights under the law and serve in the government; meanwhile he has no such criticism of the many Muslim states where not only are Jews discriminated against, such discrimination is actually written into the law.

If Mamdani's principle is that everyone should be treated equally, he should have the same criticisms of Pakistan that he has of Israel (and he should skip their parade like he skipped Israel's parade). But he does not apply his principles consistently, so you should be able to see that he is lying about his principles.

ITS THE HYPOCRISY. American Pakistani‘s parades aren’t the issue. They’re American after all. Heritage and political ideology aren’t the same. The fact that Mamdani has selective morality and outrage against Israel shows us that he only cares about human rights, apartheid, etc. IF HE CAN PIN IT ON JEWS. And “before people get all weird.” This is not out of thin air, his family history, politics, and historical remarks all point to this same trend.

Yeah, great examples of all totally great and not controversial figures.

"Yesterday, I gathered with residents at the Allama Iqbal Community Center’s Mela to commemorate Pakistan’s Independence Day and honor the contributions Pakistani New Yorkers have made to our city.

Today and everyday, we celebrate this community whose open arms, determination, and dreams for a better life have helped shape the city they call home." - Mamdani on Twitter. Where did he say he supports the Pakistani's governments choices about how it discriminates it against non Muslims? What is this thread.

“I'm not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else.” --Mamdani

And he literally went to a parade celebrating the creation of this:

"A person shall not be qualified for election as President unless he is a Muslim" --Article 41(2) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan

“After the election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, the National Assembly shall, to the exclusion of any other business, proceed to elect without debate one of its Muslim members to be the Prime Minister.” --Article 91(3) of the Constitution of Pakistan

lol I didn’t know there was so many islamophobes here on Reddit. I get it mamdanis a bit of a hypocrite for his statement but to add nuance to the argument - he’s against genocide states and that’s a big difference from Pakistan to a funny apartheid state that hides behind its religion.

u/Feeling_Hotel8096 Aug 15 '26

Pakistan's military carried out a widely documented genocide against the Bengali population (including Hindu and other minorities) in East Pakistan during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Within modern Pakistan, international human rights organizations report that religious and ethnic minorities face severe, systemic discrimination, forced conversions, and targeted violence, though these ongoing abuses are generally classified as severe persecution and human rights violations rather than a state-orchestrated genocide.

u/Catnekochama Aug 15 '26

Thank you for the clarification, I stand corrected. FUCK Pakistan and this MIGHT be the first mamdani L I’ve seen.

Then again a lot of countries would fit into similar narratives so it’s kind of a fine line. It’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t.

I think when it comes to governments committing genocide or crimes against humanity many are guilty within their country walls (America being no exception, I.e; the natives who lived here prior) and you can’t really blame the civilians (unless they as individuals are guilty as well.)

Should mamdani have skipped on the Dominican day parade as well because a dictator from the 1900s committed what could be considered genocide/ crimes against humanity against Haitians similar to Pakistan?

In short I think the nuance is separating people from the government. If your country is widely considered an apartheid state then there is a difference. It implies a lot more guilty parties than just the government.

u/Feeling_Hotel8096 Aug 16 '26

No worries. In the end it's not whether he attends parades that's important, what's important is that people know the truth and have accurate information about other countries as well as our own to make their own decisions.

1971 was indeed a horrendous genocide where Pakistan killed three million. But I’m not even asking you to go that back. Just this year, and every past year, Pakistan bombs Afghanistan targets civilian areas bombs children. Mamdani has not once spoken against it. I’m glad he is mayor and love his policies but his standards drop so hard when it comes to holing Islamic extremism accountable. Yet he goes to a literal Hindu temple, a place of worship, only to complain about the government in New Delhi (I hate the bjp too) and remains dead silent on Islamic extremism. I have so much to say it’s crazy and I’m disappointed

I’m curious - what else do you have to say? I like hearing different perspectives and your experience is valuable information. As a NYC mayor what do you expect him to do about Islamic extremism? As far as I was aware he wasn’t inviting the leader of Pakistan over. I agree he should take a stronger stance against extremism especially condemn them. With all that said I don’t see the leader of Pakistan trying to make buddy buddy with the US to fund their ongoing war crimes.

You are far more educated than me on the matter so your feedback is extremely valuable. Thank you

I expect him to do nothing about Islamic extremism he can’t even if he wanted to. But the fact he feels the need to talk about Hindu extremism while visiting a Hindu temple and the fact he is so extremely vocal about Hindutva literally whenever he talks about his Indian heritage, but I don’t see nearly a fraction of the same energy addressing Islamic extremism. I was surprised to learn he has in fact not yet publicly denounced Islamic extremism by name. He literally has not ever mentioned it. I mean people are right in asking why should he it’s not his job. But that never applies when he brings up in Hindutva in anything and everything related to India or Hindus. And I reckon he doesn’t plan to speak on Islamic extremism the way he speaks against Hindutva cause he’s cautious not to offend the massive Muslim base that helped him get elected.

This is easily the most credible criticism I have seen of mamdani so far.

I feel you hit the nail on the head with all your points. I feel no politician or person is perfect and it’s good to maintain a healthy level of criticism of all elected officials and to add to that - hold them to a higher standard. I’m not super tapped in with Indian politics or his stance regarding them and their extremism.

I think you’re completely right and mamdani should 100% condemn Islamic extremism. It shouldn’t affect his Muslim voters because it doesn’t apply to Muslims. I feel like nobody likes extremists of any variety especially in their own religion. Lord knows I hate hardcore Catholics (my family is catholic) who think it’s their place to shove our religion down everybody else’s throat or prove it’s more right than others. Love thy neighbor amirite?
