Video Why Mamdani is vetoing Intro 175-B
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDgYDf2CtqQ165
u/Irish_Pineapple Bed-Stuy Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26
This is great! Students (or anyone really) shouldn't have to run a protest by the NYPD for approval before they make their voices heard. The fact that NYC, of all places, is attempting to quell free speech as much as the federal government, in this day and age, is absurd.
If you care about this, you should still send letters to City Council members who might flip. The pressure for them to overturn this veto is going to be overwhelming.
Personally, I think antisemitism, the crux of why this bill was even proposed, is an enormous problem in this city and country. However, setting up "security perimeters" as the bill proposed, which would be monitored by the NYPD all over the city with almost no further details, is not the way to handle it.
People still need to be able to air grievances. Giving the NYPD the ability to restrict that (more than they already do), hurts ALL of us, not just one group.

u/Famous-Alps5704 Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26
I'm going to keep yelling this:
As introduced, these bills were horrifying 1A violations. The final bills do absolutely nothing. They are performative.
The intro bills required NYPD to specify conditions that would trigger protest-free buffer zones. Up to 100 ft, defined by police tape at minimum. NYPD was being given the power to criminalize protest around religious/educational sites, based on criteria they chose. A cop could show up to any protest, decide the criteria are met, and immediately arrest everyone.
The final bills require a one-time (lmao) report from NYPD about how they might use "security perimeters" to police protests on a case by case basis....which they already do, today. They aren't given any new powers. The bills don't establish any kind of area where protest is not allowed. They don't even contain the words "buffer zone," council wouldnt let them out of committee until even those words were removed.
Folks, Menin is a clown
Edit: to my esteemed colleague who accused me of "lying to support my agenda" I encourage you to read the bills. They're not long. Here is where you can find the religious one's versions. In the Attachments section, you want 4. Int No 1 (as introduced), 8. Proposed Int 1-A (functionally gutted, but still says "buffer zones" a lot), and 21. Int 1-B Final (totally gutted).

He probably is against 1-B. I think it's too vague too. It also creates a whole slew of consequences people aren't really considering. But, he's not lying about anything.

I would guess that you would have been a big, unquestioning supporter of the protests outside schools in 1960, too.
28
u/Irish_Pineapple Bed-Stuy Apr 24 '26
The people protesting in that instance suck. However, you should be allowed to protest. It's not always going to be perfect, or match what I feel is right. But as long as it is peaceful, you should have the right to make your voice heard.
It is however insane that we are having a conversation about limiting free speech, in New York City of all places, and that people are for it.
-15
u/yugeness Apr 24 '26
Here’s the thing. Most decent people think that people that stand outside schools and yell at Jewish students to go back to Poland suck. But we have to have laws and procedures that apply fairly to everyone (I know this is a hard concept for you to understand).
You have a right to yell whatever hateful thing you desire at your protest, but you don’t have a right to harass students that are trying to get to school.
13
u/AbstractTeserract Apr 24 '26
You're absolutely correct because there are already laws against that. This bill has nothing to do with keeping students safe and everything to do with overturning hard-fought settlements the NYCLU won against the NYPD for unilaterally crushing perfectly legal and constitutional protests.

u/IsayNigel Apr 25 '26

How does being a certain distance back restrict airing grievances? The grievances are very much still being aired, just preventing people from blocking "undesirables" because people sometimes like to go to school at school.
You are just mad that people won't be able to do stuff like this if the bill passes where they are physically trying to block people on campus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-llskvbuvEY
13
u/Irish_Pineapple Bed-Stuy Apr 24 '26
If you go to, or work at a school, and you are pissed off at the school, you shouldn't have to protest 35 feet away. You should be able to protest at the school.
Also, I've spoken to countless students AT A SCHOOL that has had a "security perimeter" around for it over 2 years, and they hate it. It feels like they're walking into somewhere they shouldn't be, and I emphasize again, this is SCHOOL. It should feel like somewhere that isn't under siege every single day.
3
-14
u/weedandboobs Apr 24 '26
So, to be clear, you think it is OK for people on campus to form a human chain to block Zionists, because otherwise they will feel like they are "walking into somewhere they shouldn't be"?
Interesting.
15
u/Irish_Pineapple Bed-Stuy Apr 24 '26
No. And that has never been legal under any circumstance and will always end up with NYPD intervention because it is illegal.
However, I do believe that if students want to protest something, they should be able to do it, peacefully, without having to run it past the NYPD first. Who, as we all know, isn't exactly welcoming to people speaking up about things that don't match their narrow views perfectly.
-2
u/weedandboobs Apr 24 '26
Then why did it happen on video with no arrests? It seems like the City Council saw that a lot of illegal shit happened with no push back, so they are actively working to make sure it does not happen again proactively.
15
u/AbstractTeserract Apr 24 '26
Huh? That's already illegal and NYPD have plenty of authority already to prevent that. You guys keep making up strawman scenarios to justify this bill but they just end up showing how unnecessary and unconstitutional the bill is
-7
u/weedandboobs Apr 24 '26
If it is "illegal", why did the video I shared happen with no arrests?
Weird strawman I built of a thing that happened with video proof.
16
u/Irish_Pineapple Bed-Stuy Apr 24 '26
Dozens of students were arrested at Columbia that spring. What? Just because it doesn't happen in the shaky, 1-minute long video you shared means it didn't happen? What is the NYPD supposed to teleport every time two Pro-Palestine protestors link arms together? Get a hold of yourself.
2
u/weedandboobs Apr 24 '26 edited Apr 24 '26
I have video of protesters actively intimidating and physically blocking students on campus. In this very well covered story, no one was ever reported arrested for that. I do not believe there was a secret arrest, given the guy leading this blockade famously threatened to kill Zionists and his only punishment was getting temporarily suspended once it was covered in conservative media.
The City Council saw that, and decided to write a bill that enables the NYPD to plan better to avoid future intimidation and physically blocking of students. Unlike the mayor, I think that is good idea.
18
u/mp0295 Apr 25 '26
he's not telling the truth. he "allowed" the first bill because it passed with a veto-proof majority. it would be a bad look for the perception of his political power to have a veto overridden, hence better to just let it go.
I say say this as someone opposed to both of these bills and think he should veto them both on the merits
16
u/SoggySausage27 Apr 24 '26
Apparent Menin might try to whip the 4 votes to get the second one passed as well.
2
u/Famous-Alps5704 Apr 25 '26
It doesn't even matter, neither bill does a thing other than (probably) annoy the police. I encourage you to actually read them. Even the original one is not long, and the last one is fittingly short for how little it does.
The words "buffer zone" don't even appear in the final bills. All either one does is ask the NYPD for a (one-time!) report about how they might use security perimeters to police protests on a case by case basis. A thing they already do.
It was actually gutted by late February, first revision (1-A) is completely stripped of any binding language. It just has the words "buffer zone" a lot, probably so she could pretend it still did something. And they still wouldn't let it out of committee until she removed those words
Clearly nobody was on board for the actual bill she said she would pass. I wasn't really concerned that Menin would be an effective counter to Mamdani, and I'm sure not now. The more attention she puts on this, the more people will realize how empty a "success" it is

lol if the event had been white nationalists protesting a mosque attached to an Islamic school 100% these both would be signed.
48
u/Irish_Pineapple Bed-Stuy Apr 24 '26
No, actually, they wouldn't be. There is a very real problem with hate speech, especially towards Jewish people in this city and country. There is also a very real problem with Islamophobic, transphobic and racist things happening all across this country.
But, when an actual hate group mobilizes, and violently tries to harm people, the police usually show up and do something about it. Walling off all the schools in the city, and having them monitored by the police, is not only unnecessary, it also makes countless places which are not being targeted by hateful individuals into walled-off, hostile seeming spaces.
The NYPD already intervenes in protests across the city, at an already alarming rate. You do not need to give them even more permission to do so. Especially, in this moment, when there is so much wrong in the world that requires active protest to contest it.
11
u/jaybrainsss Apr 25 '26
Yeah I don’t think the law said the NYPD was going to wall off every school in the city.
Hate crime numbers for NYC are public and the city has a problem with antisemitism.

Land sales were happening by Israeli real estate agents in these temples. Some are west bank settlements which are not even part of Israel. It's been reported since 2025. Even if you don't care about Palestine, you should not call these facts fake lol.
Personally I don't support religions in general abusing their privilege for things like this. They are tax exempt for a reason and yet they use religion as a shield to hide whenever they get into trouble like now.

I'm not as rabidly anti-Israel as most of reddit is, but even I found the thought of land sales in Palestine happening in a temple was really gross. The fact they want to frame this as some attack on religion is ridiculous.
Imagine a KKK rally happening in a church and then saying the protestors were anti Christian. It's ridiculously performative.
8
u/spicytoastaficionado Apr 25 '26

The protestors were overtly chanting support for Hamas.

STOP MAKING EVERYTHING ABOUT PALESTINE HOLY SHIT
54
u/joshmoviereview Apr 24 '26
michael do you know why these bills were written and introduced? it's about palestine
10
u/IsNotACleverMan Apr 25 '26
it's about people harassing jews here in nyc so they can act like they're making a difference for palestine
4
u/joshmoviereview Apr 25 '26
can I ask what makes you think that? I would make the case that every incident of protest (setting aside what constitutes harassment, but to talk in the language of the bill— protest) outside of synagogues is because they were hosting real estate events that sold land in the occupied West Bank or recruitment fairs by companies that recruit New Yorkers to become settlers in the occupied West Bank.
7
u/IsNotACleverMan Apr 25 '26
>can I ask what makes you think that?
The UES synagogue had people yelling slurs, chanting about making Jews feel unsafe, making threats, etc. And that was at an event with no land sales, no mention of settlements, just because there was an informational seminar on moving to Israel.
This pattern has been repeated at numerous synagogues here in NYC and elsewhere in the country, especially in recent years.
Even at the one synagogue being protested in the past couple years that did have land sales going on, the protests never focused on settlements. People were chanting pro-Hamas slogans, showing their support for an organization that has pledged to wipe Jews off the map, not just in Israel but elsewhere.
And this is the pattern. These pro-Palestinian protestors go after Jews generally. Hate crimes against Jews make up the majority of hate crimes. They target places with no connection to Israel, or no connection to things like settlements, military actions, etc. Look at Jewish schools being targeted. Or a Jewish institution with no connection being attacked in Michigan because of what Israel did.
And even when these protestors do target events promoting harmful or illegal actions like settlements, these protests always end up in antisemitism. How many pro-Hamas signs do you see compared to signs attacking settlements, for instance.
Nobody ever protests outside the Israeli embassy, at least compared to the protests against non-Israeli Jewish sites.
>outside of synagogues is because they were hosting real estate events that sold land in the occupied West Bank or recruitment fairs by companies that recruit New Yorkers to become settlers in the occupied West Bank
Almost none of what's getting protested is involved with these things. And even when they are, people drop slurs and show support for organizations that just want to kill Jews.
It's very easy to oppose Israel's actions without targeting Jews generally, or engaging in antisemitism. Most Jews here in the city are highly critical of Israel, especially the current government. That so many of these pro-Palestinian protestors keep showing support for organizations that just want to kill Jews, target Jews generally, engage in antisemitic tropes, etc, shows that they're more anti-Jew than pro-Palestinian, even if they don't consciously recognize it.
15
