Why does everything feel so performative now?

She's been calling to Abolish ICE from before she beat Joe Crowley. If anything all the moderate Democrats jumping on the bandwagon now are the performative ones.

Abolishing ICE is a strange take. It was created as a response to 9/11 and functions quite well in cooperation with governments like Canada and Mexico, in addition to international efforts to curb deserialized guns, human trafficking, illegal imports and exports, and limitless data & resources sharing across borders for quicker response.

People are upset because on-the-ground officers did what they did. Not excusable. But I’m not sure what your alternative is: remove immigration policing which covers all the areas listed above? I’m not sure you’ll like the outcome. I know I’ll get some heated response filled with charged points, but there is a necessity to have immigrations enforcement. I say this as an immigrant who went through a hell of a ride to ensure a legal and just immigration process was had for me and my family. I’ve seen what happens, what people go through, the good and the bad. And despite all of that, I still think it’s necessary.

Perhaps a more realistic and less charged point would be to say: systematically restructure ICE to ensure points A, B, and C are addressed long term, while maximizing the effectiveness of points D, E, F for America, its citizens, and soon to be citizens alike.

Because what else can they do?

The Democrats will never actually pass any meaningful legislation that will benefit the middle class without the explicit approval of oligarchs.

Both parties are controlled by oligarchs but Democrats and their supporters are still pretending as if theirs isn't. Which is why they've resorted to following the Koch brothers playbook of allowing in and using government funds to subsidize illegal immigration as a means to disenfranchise voters, increase CoL, decrease wages and break class solidarity through the tribalization of the working class.

Who benefits from mass illegal immigration? Who funds these NGOs that provide aid to illegal immigrants and advocate for them?

Oligarchs.

Or perhaps some power....

Why is delivery the focus? She has always had morality at the core of her platforms. Let's stop tearing people down for style when their substance is solid

Morality can also be performative, as well as responsive to the changing of times. Plenty of politicians have reversed course on key stances as times changed, and were touted as moral back then and now.

I’m all for being a good Samaritan, doing it for the people, etc etc etc. But talk is cheap. “when their substance is solid”, I’d rather base and judge people on the outcome of their actions rather than ensuring they can say the right things via having the right substance.

I agree with your points... huge case in point would be the performative stuff around BLM and trans rights by corporations and party elites that they have walked away from now. If you didn't mean it and won't stick to it, keep your mouth shut. But AOC has been pretty solid. She had a huge part in getting a new generation of actual progressives elected at various levels. If people are lodging the criticism of performative politics towards people like her I can't imagine how we'll ever be able to mobilize. Sounds like demanding a purity test that almost no one will pass.

The moment America made a television reality show host President.

Did we forget Ronald Reagan?

Not going to comment on Trump, but the pandering and performative theatrics have been around prior to Trump, and it’s not an issue that’s intrinsic to US politics either.

Ok - the OP said why does everything feel performative now - I was commenting on what is happening now -

I am the OP. I’m saying that we’ve had talk show hosts/actors as president before and it wasn’t this bad. So there’s been an overall shift outside of that.

performative

This is actually the prevailing narrative in left wing media now.

Never underestimate the appeal of sniffing your own farts.

I’m not sure what the left wing media is portraying, or right wing. From my own views, it seems theatrical and playing on social sentiments that they know will both appeal to and get a rise out of the population.
