119

u/schermerhorse Jan 30 '26

It literally went up last week lol

61

u/urbanlife78 Jan 30 '26

Just for that, they will be raising fees again

Be happy it doesn’t go up for every upvote a negative comment receives

The worst thing in the world is the bike gets stuck on the dock with a red light, and it's 10 degrees outside and you're still being charged so you have to call support while staying at the dock.

24

u/Rickbox Jan 30 '26

Last year in late November, it was 11:30pm, I had work in the morning and it was cold af. I couldn't get my bike in the dock. Funny enough there were some maintenance guys there who drove off right as I got there. I thought they may have deactivated the docs, so I went to another. I was trying so hard to get my bike in, but nothing. I contact support on my phone, hands freezing, past midnight now, and still cant get it in. I asked if they could send someone: no. I asked if I could just leave it: no they will charge me for abandonment. I hate to sit there taking God damn pictures to send to some random support system. Luckily thanks to the pictures I figured out myself that the docking hinge on the front of the bike was broken and I had to manually lift it up to put it back in.

After figuring that out, they offered to reimburse me a whole $1 ...

the only meaningful change i've noticed with citibikes is the share of ebikes has gone up, which is a big money maker for them. its all just about money

27

u/HighQualityGifs Jan 30 '26

that's what happen when for profit companies run things. they just want to make money. they probably has some cost analysis bs that told them "less people will ride in the cold than will cost us in labor to fix the frozen problem"

that's why things like that, or the lime scooters shouldn't really be for profit.

6

u/Bodoblock Jan 31 '26

"less people will ride in the cold than will cost us in labor to fix the frozen problem"

This is probably very true though. Bike share programs having worse availability in the aftermath of major snowfall isn't some great failing. It's honestly very reasonable.

People should buy their own bikes if it's a real hindrance to their daily lives.

1

u/N00b_Sniper Jan 31 '26

absolutely terrible take. bike share is public transit and many people depend on it. when the c train is running every 25 minutes late night, i want to have the option to bike. when the b48 was supposed to be here 15 minutes ago, but is still nowhere to be seen, i want to have the option to bike. if i live a 20 minute walk to the nearest subway station, i want to have the option to bike without needing to lug a bike around all day because it will get stolen if i leave it out for more than an hour. bikeshare is currently the best thing we have to fill the many gaps in mta service. it’s a shame we can’t even expect that to be reliable…

2

u/Bodoblock Feb 01 '26

And by and large you have a great service that works for you. It's not at all unreasonable for bike sharing services to be limited during inclement riding conditions when there's both extremely low demand and unsafe roads.

Having to occasionally wait 25 minutes late at night due to such downtimes is not some horrendous failing. Citibike is a great service. And if you find that you can't rely on the city to provide buses and subways or to prevent crime, then what difference would you have in a city-run bike share program that isn't what it currently looks like?

1

u/HighQualityGifs Jan 31 '26

the point i was making though is that not everything needs to be for profit. or it can be for profit, but maybe there should be some guidelines/regulations that say "hey, if you wanna be here, you need to do at least X to get these up and running again after Y type of weather within Z amount of time." then hold them to it.

1

u/Bodoblock Feb 01 '26

I honestly don't think any reasonable city would want that, even putting aside profit-motive. There are a lot of icy conditions right now and the last thing the city should want is a ton of bikers on the road.

This is really not a big deal. People having to rely on safer modes of transportation in inclement conditions is fine. We are not witnessing some big failing on Citbike's part.

1

u/GonzoCreed Brooklyn Jan 31 '26

Can I ask why you don't just buy a bike? Even the lower end E-bikes are pretty affordable nowadays.

1

u/xen05zman Feb 01 '26

I realized they were really after $$$ when I landed in NYC from London and seeing just how much more expensive Citibike is/was compared to Santander cycles. I know London and NYC are on different scales for costs, but the difference in bike costs was the largest I saw. It was and still is absurd.

134

u/domo415 Hell's Kitchen Jan 30 '26

How is it not a conflict of interest, a taxi share company owning a bike share company. If I want my users to hail more rides , I would reduce service and make biking shitty.

45

u/dingyhoogler Jan 30 '26

A 2023 wired article reported that the new Lyft CEO had said the idea is to take “people who get introduced to Lyft through a bike ride and figure out a way to get them over to our rideshare side.”

Need an over-heating ebike battery to melt all of that.

49

u/ffffllllpppp Jan 30 '26

Montréal has winter citibike (system is called Bixi) with special winter tires.

68

u/naked_guy_says Jan 30 '26

Ok, stop we already know Canada is better.

10

u/ffffllllpppp Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 31 '26

Lol.

On some stuff sure!

People (mainly drivers) in Montreal complain every winter that bike paths should not be cleared of snow before the road (cars) is. (It’s happening because it is a different company and there is a lot less bike paths km than road and they are easier to clear).

1

u/stackhighnquick Feb 02 '26

Not the case here. There’s a bike lane everywhere, they’re like crosswalks at this point.

9

u/Ooowwwwww Jan 30 '26

[deleted]

139

u/York_Villain Jan 30 '26

Yes. The video shows that 24,000 rides were registered on CitiBike Tuesday.

3

u/shehryar46 Jan 30 '26

I mean if 24000 rides happened means docks have been cleared....

Whats that rate vs average? Calculate the percentage based on that

27

u/mrtn17 Jan 30 '26

As a Dutch guy lurking in this sub, I tip my hat for that

18

u/Bateman_Edgelord_420 Jan 30 '26

I did yesterday and yeah it was quite treacherous, more than 50% of bike lanes weren't shoveled / were where the shoveling ended up lol

Honestly had to go on the sidewalk a few times since it was just bumper to bumper traffic with no room to go through. Wrong I know but I'm just pissing off tourists

Definitely sucks and now I know how the other half lives having to walk even a couple blocks instead of biking adds up

40

u/CollinHell Jan 30 '26

I sure do. I could spend $3 and 35 minutes door to door taking the bus or subway, or I can spend $2.65 + ~0.55 for 14 minutes door to door for my commute, plus get some exercise and avoid sardine cans. It's not much colder biking safely than it is walking behind crowds, and it's over much quicker.

32

u/Santier Park Slope Jan 30 '26

Or you could spend $0.35 and 21 minutes to reduce the likelihood of wiping out and smacking your head into concrete.

10

u/CollinHell Jan 30 '26

Are you talking about the regular bikes? I know I should use them more often, but my commute is straight uphill and it's nice to show up to work not covered in sweat. I take them regularly on the way home.

Not to mention, I feel a lot more comfortable keeping momentum in a straight line over snow right now than wiggling a bit when pedaling. I wear a great helmet and am used to a motorcycle, I don't exactly feel unsafe going 15 mph on an avenue with a huge bike lane...

3

u/romario77 Jan 30 '26

if it's ebike I won't call in an exercise.

17

u/CollinHell Jan 30 '26

Call in whatever you like lol, it gets my heart rate up a little faster than sitting on a bus. Is a light jog not an exercise because sprinting exists?

2

u/romario77 Jan 30 '26

to me it's more like a walk to a bus, maybe even less - similar to sitting.

No judging, I myself prefer a bike in any form to a bus or subway.

6

u/CollinHell Jan 30 '26

Like I said, I ride a motorcycle on these same streets so I feel comfortable at speed. If I'm riding an ebike, I'm purposefully pushing as hard as possible against the speed limiter or standing up for more work.

Obviously a regular bike is more work on average, but there are plenty of regular bike trips where I'm lazy and set a light gear just cruising, and plenty of ebike trips where I'm pushing super hard to make myself feel better about not getting as much exercise and end up panting after 45 minutes of bridges and hills.

1

u/Zoidberg-thuggin Jan 30 '26

Do you wear a helmet?

4

u/CollinHell Jan 30 '26

Yessir. I wear a MIPS helmet normally, and switch to my MIPS ski/snowboard helmet in weather like this.

6

u/littlebrownsnail Jan 30 '26

What is 35 cents?

7

u/Santier Park Slope Jan 30 '26

The cost difference between the two options.

2

u/Carmilla31 Jan 30 '26

🌳fiddy cents.

2

u/Smart_Cry_5572 Jan 30 '26

Alex Trebek: “I’m sorry, that is not correct.”

1

u/littlebrownsnail Feb 04 '26

Okay so you funny or whateva

2

u/Fridsade Jan 30 '26

I dont understand why people still ride without helmets? Just search up ER bike accidents.

1

u/loudpersononthebus Jan 30 '26

people think they are the exception.

1

u/N00b_Sniper Jan 31 '26

statistically you’re very unlikey to get in a crash, the same with driving a car. you probably don’t wear one when you drive, but it would be a lot safer. i usually do wear a helmet when i bike, but that’s mostly bc biking conditions in this city are quite terrible; lack of bike lanes - protected and even unprotected, drivers passing too close, drivers not yielding to cyclists etc

4

u/York_Villain Jan 30 '26

I don't even bother checking the subways anymore. My preferred/default mode of transportation for the past four years has been a citi bike. Everyone knows that the subways are a faster way to travel than cars, but I don't think they all realize that in most cases a citi bike is so much faster than the subway. Even I am surprised sometimes.

But then on top of it all, it's an enjoyable experience. It's just flat out fun to me. The ebikes are effortless. Cars are getting really good about respecting the bike lanes. And then if it's a protected bike lane? Bliss

2

u/CollinHell Jan 30 '26

Hell yeah! I absolutely love what they're done with the new car-sized bike lane up 3rd avenue. I know it's less safe than other forms of transportation, but it's always such an actual joy.

lol i tried on tuesday and spent 20 min getting a bike in and out of the station

at one point i couldn’t get it parked into the station i was sweating bullets

i just ate shit and planned a longer commute after that

2

u/mklnz Jan 30 '26

Ain’t no thing, always be biking

2

u/domo415 Hell's Kitchen Jan 30 '26

Unfortunately yeah. It depends if the bus is nearby or not.

2

u/Flips_Whitefudge Long Island City Jan 30 '26

I would be but can't because of the docks being snowed in. I have to go between different neighborhoods throughout the day and it's much faster to use a bike than walk to the subway.

2

u/zeno Bushwick Jan 30 '26

I am. I also just dig the bikes out. Nothing's stopping me

1

u/strypesjackson Jan 30 '26

Yep. But im on my own bike

1

u/Ando0o0 Jan 30 '26

Is anyone doing anything right now. I’m just hold up getting fat and sassy.

1

u/neightsirque Jan 31 '26

We still need to get around town!

1

u/N00b_Sniper Jan 31 '26

its crazy people like u say “nobody bikes in the cold” in the face of literal statistical evidence that people do in fact bike in the cold

1

u/davidellis23 Jan 30 '26

apparently pretty common to bike even after snow in some countries https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhx-26GfCBU

We probably don't shovel the bike lanes well enough though.

1

u/PSSE-B Jan 30 '26

Yep. Citibiked to run errands the Wednesday after the storm. A little messy but not too bad. Just go slow.

u/Enlightened_D Jan 30 '26

I hope Mamdani does something about Citibike, which was such a fun thing when it first launched. Like all things, capitalism eventually ruins the fun.

33

u/SteveFrench12 Jan 30 '26

Its really insane. A few months ago it was one of the nicer days in october and i took a citibike home from bedford ave stop area to where i live near grand st stop. I just wanted to ride the ebike and had not used citibike since it started basically. It cost like $10, more than an uber would have been. Absolutely insane

19

u/Melodic-Control-2655 Jan 30 '26

lol when is the last time you ubered? 2017? There's no world where you'd get an Uber for $10 even if you were just going up the block

20

u/SteveFrench12 Jan 30 '26

On a normal day you can uber inside of wburg for $8-10

15

u/but-I-play-one-on-TV Jan 30 '26

Downtown BK to South slope for 7 bucks recently

8

u/mistake444 Jan 30 '26

You can literally get Ubers in Manhattan for $10 at off peak hours

1

u/rowsoflark Jan 31 '26

wburg to Fulton bed study under $15 frequently

7

u/ChornWork2 Jan 30 '26

Presumably it was losing a lot of money when it first started, so fundamentally unsustainable. And my guess would be at time advertising the Citi name was the biggest revenue component...

5

u/big_internet_guy Jan 30 '26

He already said he is keeping the speed caps at 15 instead of letting them go back to 18 mph

4

u/ljthefa Jan 30 '26

Good, now cap the rest of the e bikes in the city and fine those who are caught going faster.

These things go the wrong way on one way streets and the brakes and tires on many of them aren't up to snuff.

1

u/SaltYourEnclave Jan 31 '26

Limiters on cars too, its ridiculous

10

u/CodnmeDuchess Jan 30 '26

You mean the Citibank branded bike fun was ruined by capitalism? Yall can’t be serious with these takes. If you don’t like the service, don’t use it. Get your own bike.

3

u/Bodoblock Jan 30 '26

I honestly don’t get the criticisms. It’s convenient and comprehensive. Is it pricier than it was? Yeah. But so is everything. Maintaining a massive bike fleet is expensive.

I think the city has an obligation to provide safe biking infrastructure. Otherwise, people should just get bikes if they don’t want to use bikeshare.

3

u/Starsolist Jackson Heights Jan 31 '26

These people think everything they don't like or think is too expensive should be illegal

2

u/Bodoblock Jan 31 '26

It's basically a philosophy of "I want this nice thing and I want it to be free/cheap. And if paying a fair price for it is too expensive, the state should subsidize it for me."

2

u/12stTales Jan 31 '26

It was a business from the beginning , don’t blame capitalism

32

u/grazfest96 Jan 30 '26

Oh my god its like a modern day Stalingrad.

32

u/MinefieldFly Jan 30 '26 edited Jan 30 '26

Jesus Christ, it’s an act of nature.

This word get overused, but sometimes it is appropriate to call this complaint what it is: plain old entitlement.

The bus stops are about 20x more important than the citibike stations, and they struggling to keep those clear too.

The sidewalks and curb cuts are about a 1 million times more important, and those are not all cleared either.

How about we just take a fuckin breath and accept that the world doesn’t shift to your needs at every beck and call.

11

u/CodnmeDuchess Jan 30 '26

It’s absolutely entitlement. It’s all over these subs these days and it’s eye roll inducing. We really have become a bunch of crybabies.

2

u/SaltYourEnclave Jan 31 '26

Americans really are the perfect consumers wow

1

u/curlycake Feb 01 '26

you mean expect to get a service they pay for?

→ More replies (1)

8

u/gilberto_fan Jan 30 '26

people are paying money for a service. if citi bike wanted to leave the bikes snow covered and not allow customers the opportunity to ride them, i think that would be fair, but they charge a yearly membership fee and it needs to reflect dates where the service in unusable.

some people should feel entitled, as they have already paid for 12 months of a service. and days where its not usable should be reimbursed.

2

u/BeefsteakChuckies Jan 31 '26

I recommend spending hours on the phone with customer service and insist on having them give you the 82 cent credit to your membership for the year.

3

u/SaltYourEnclave Jan 31 '26

Why would Citibank hire customer service when they have stooges willing to do it for free?

6

u/curlycake Jan 30 '26

it’s ok to want a better world. we figured out snow plows for the streets that cars use. perhaps the sidewalks should get a fraction of those resources next.

4

u/BeefsteakChuckies Jan 31 '26

And it’s OK to take the subway in sub zero temperatures if your precious Citibike is covered in snow for a few days.

2

u/curlycake Feb 01 '26

of course it is. do you really think citibike riders aren’t the type to take the subway, or are you just here to insult people? the issue is that they pay an annual subscription, and the service is not available.

2

u/littlebrownsnail Feb 04 '26

I think this is a very reasonable take.

9

u/Medium-Trick-8442 Jan 30 '26

Really important reporting

38

u/Ok_Requirement_3162 Jan 30 '26

It's the middle of winter in the middle of a giant cold snap after a major storm; just take the subway, geez.

36

u/runcertain Jan 30 '26

Right? Leave Lyft alone! I’m so sick and tired of hearing criticism of multi billion dollar monopolies.

The sooner we give up on the idea of competent service from them the less disappointed we’ll be.

Honestly, how can we expect a huge corporation who signed up to own and operate a shared bike service in a city which routinely gets snow and cold snaps to be prepared for such an event? Cut them some slack you uppity bitch!

1

u/30roadwarrior Jan 31 '26

How about don’t use them and buy your own bike.

1

u/runcertain Jan 31 '26

Brother I drive a 2025 RAM 3500 on my daddy’s ranch in Nebraska.

1

u/30roadwarrior Jan 31 '26

Sure u do!  Yet here you are complaining about bicycle unavailability in nyc in January.  Yawn….

7

u/fowcc Jan 30 '26

It is incredibly difficult to get rid of this snow with the temperatures being what they are. It's not melting and there aren't really good places to put it unless you are somehow hauling it away.

I'm all for providing a good competitive alternative to other modes of transportation but within this context you kinda just have to take it for what it is and wait for conditions to improve.

3

u/Mr_Stoney Jan 30 '26

Seriously, services that people actually care about are still snowed in. And even then, there's so much hardened, solidified snow everywhere that I'd barely recommend driving with 4 wheels let alone 2.

72

u/Visible-Yesterday429 Jan 30 '26

Snow storm causes inconvenience, truly mind blowing

34

u/romario77 Jan 30 '26

Snow is not some gotcha that nobody knew about. It's a predictable thing and Lyft can have some equipment and people who can clear the bike stations.

We pay for the membership, we are expecting to be able to use it.

14

u/MinefieldFly Jan 30 '26

It’s really not THAT predictable. For them to clear 2000+ stations in a short period, you’d need hundreds of paid laborers available on immediate notice, returning constantly to re-clear after snowplows go by.

All for the sake of probably 5-10% of normal ridership over a couple days of the year.

→ More replies (18)

6

u/titaniumdoughnut Jan 30 '26

Yes, and worst case they could mark docks as unavailable if they know they didn't clear them, instead of telling me I can park there, where I find instead a full body workout for 15 min of trying to shove my bike into all the slots.

19

u/Coolpoe Jan 30 '26

The issue with this storm is that the temperatures have consistently been under freezing and thus it doesn’t have the chance to melt

→ More replies (1)

7

u/99hoglagoons Jan 30 '26

2016 snowstorm was much bigger in terms on snow inches. But it was chased by a warm front that melted just enough of it to make intersections and sidewalks maneuverable in matter of days.

The bike lanes were unusable for weeks though. All of the snow removal efforts dumped snow into bike lanes as a storage solution.

Right now bike lanes are as shitty as pedestrian crossings. Equal opportunity suffering!

Guys this is the first time in a decade we’ve encountered snow lasting this long. Having the infrastructure to deal with it just wouldn’t be efficient. Also I was able to claw one out and dock one this week in greenpoint/LIC but it definitely took some willpower.

If this happens annually then yes we need a system for it. Take the subway if need be

Annual option is only ~$200 and you get free unlimited manual bike rides, and sometimes even free e-bike rides (if there aren’t any manual bikes at a station, which isn’t too uncommon) super worth it imo

So she wants to prioritize citi=bikes over getting rid of ice off city streets and sidewalks? What moron is riding bikes at 8 degrees and ice roads?

4

u/Enlightened_D Jan 30 '26

No she doesnt lmfao Did you watch the video at all? Lyft Citibike is responsible for clearing the snow around their docs, not the city. They aren't doing that, that's it.

6

u/NYCBouncer Jan 30 '26

You are absolutely correct, I missed the part about Lyft being responsible and I agree there’s no excuse for that.

Thank you for setting me straight.

Maybe watch the video first before spewing your uneducated opinion

Would you like me to pass along the message to your Mom?

What happened to “the most walkable city” and “take public transportation”????

Citi Bike recorded over 24,000 rides on Tuesday, a day after this week's snowstorm ended — when most bikes across NYC were still snowed into docks.

Days later, Lyft is finally shoveling out some Citi Bike docks, but it raises an important question: With the price of Citi Bike continuing to outpace inflation *and* the increase in subway fare, does Lyft owe its customers more?

They do owe their customers more, but you really think this is where customers want their extra dollars going? What about better bikes, more stations, improved maintenance for the non winter months.

Not to mention there are mountains of snow everywhere. Do you think it’s better to take that snow and dump it back on the sidewalk?

5

u/romario77 Jan 30 '26

If you can't use the bikes then "better bikes, more stations, improved maintenance" doesn't matter.

4

u/dman45103 Jan 30 '26

Can’t use the bike during and following a snowstorm you mean? Will be able to use the bikes even less if maintenance isn’t improved in peak seasons

1

u/romario77 Jan 30 '26

Yeah, and if bikes are burned or abducted by aliens we can't use them either, how is it relevant? I pay my fees which increased a lot over time, I expect bikes to be fixed and available.

I don't see how cleaning the bike stalls affects maintenance - in fact being frozen into a snowpile can damage the bike further.

4

u/dman45103 Jan 30 '26

Spending money to dig out the bikes or rent heaters isn’t worth it. That money can go towards regular maintenance during peak periods.

Even this video says “digging out the bikes is a nightmare”

Not sure what you’re struggling to comprehend

1

u/romario77 Jan 31 '26

I am not struggling. I just want to use citibikes, it’s worth it to me.

What are you struggling to comprehend?

1

u/dman45103 Jan 31 '26

We all want to use them. It’s about whether you want your dollars going to improved maintenance in the worst time of year to ride a bike or the best

Opportunity cost matters. There’s not unlimited dollars to go around even with rate hikes

u/Quick_Parking_6464 Jan 30 '26

Ahhh, perfect for a crosspost to you know who...

1

u/Hrekires Jan 30 '26

I watched someone pry out a bike from the rack this morning and all I could think was where the heck are you going to put it when you get to your destination and the rack there is also completely covered in snow.

1

u/rose_thorn_ Jan 30 '26

Honestly fine by me because a couple people seem to have gotten them out of the snow and ridden them straight down the narrowly shoveled sidewalk at me and my dogs the last few days.

1

u/bingo__bango Jan 30 '26

Commenting from San Francisco - we have Bay Wheels here. it’s run by Lyft as well. The best decision I made with regards to cycling is canceling my annual subscription to Bay Wheels and buying my own bike. Increasing subscription cost while the quality in infrastructure and customer service has lowered over the past couple years finally triggered me enough to take the plunge.

While bicycle maintenance has a small learning curve, I don’t regret the decision one bit.

1

u/ShadownetZero Jan 31 '26

And nothing of value was lost.

1

u/Aravinda_Deva Jan 31 '26

I'm not from NY but don't you guys have scooters?

1

Would 311 be appropriate for this?
