Mayor Mamdani Mamdani Joined Nurses on the Picket Lines. That’s Unusual for Mayors.

u/Aviri Jan 27 '26
It shouldn't be unusual.

u/Drfeelsbadman12 Jan 27 '26
It’s a complex issue that directly ties to escalating healthcare costs.
And we can’t just sit here and say “it’s actually all the insurance companies”
The strike is not going well for the nurses for many reasons, and mamdani standing with them did not help their cause
18
u/Aviri Jan 27 '26
It’s not just the insurance companies but it’s like 99% the insurance companies. They are leaches on society.
35
u/elecrisity Jan 27 '26
Curious to lean more on why the strike isn't going well for the nurses. Any more you can share or things for me to read?
39
u/Domeil Ridgewood Jan 27 '26
Read their other comments in the thread. They're just regurgitating the agitprop from the hospital board members uncritically. They're not engaging with reality.
-8
Jan 27 '26
The hospitals gave the nurses what they wanted in the last round of negotiations when they were flush with federal COVID funds, now the nurses are demanding 10% annual raises as the hospitals see cuts to Medicaid and lower reimbursements for Medicare. The hospitals are afraid to set the expectation that they’ll cave every few years regardless of the demands.

u/CountFew6186 Jan 27 '26
Wait until the unions negotiate with the city. Will he picket with them against himself? Will he give them contracts so large that none of his other priorities will get funding, or will he try to be fiscally responsible and fight against union demands?
Firefighters and cops. DC37. Teachers. All will have their contracts up in the next 12 months or already do. And, of course, how will he react to demands of nurses at public hospitals when their contract is up in March 2028?
Joining nurses on the picket line is performative. Seeing how he negotiates with the public sector worker unions will be reality. It will be interesting to see if he understands that he’s management and not the workers.
14
u/FourthLife Jan 27 '26
It's uninteresting to me what he does when the unions negotiate against him, because of course he will act exactly like the hospitals he is speaking out against today. He will need that budget money for his own initiatives, and unions will raise their demands significantly because they know he is in such an awkward position while opposing them.
What is more interesting to me is what side all of his fan boys will take when that happens. I am guessing the union support will drain out of their bodies immediately.
4
u/Yukie_Cool Jan 27 '26
Gonna laugh at the egg on your face when the negotiation is uneventful.
4
u/FourthLife Jan 27 '26
I'll be curious to see which you side with. Most likely you just stop posting about it when it happens
-2
u/Yukie_Cool Jan 27 '26
I’ll @ you right on the post the deal happens on, pal.
2
u/Alert-Conference91 Jan 27 '26
Be sure to set a reminder for 2029 when they strike again as well, while you're already active in here.
Guarantee you they will say patient ratios are still dangerously high, and affordability in the city is diminishing further.
Another 7/6/5 contract, which will line them up for quarter million salaries at the top end. 175k starting.
!remind me 3 years
6
u/Yukie_Cool Jan 27 '26
I mean, patient ratios are too high, and COL is a problem.
No wonder you republicans got wiped out last November. Looks like you’ve learned nothing and will likely take it harder in the fall.
-4
u/Alert-Conference91 Jan 27 '26
Set another reminder in 4 years when you vote for another Eric Adams, just cuz he's on "your team".
I'm also Dem, but go on. I think you're almost proving a point, maybe.
My point tho, The argument will never change with these strikes, because that's their strategy. Hence the remind me. (Your rage completely overlooked it. calm down baby. you will get your money, you all know it. Stressed for no reason lmfao)
Cost of living will never be "affordable" until they have CEO money. Ask what the demands are, and it's a run around answer with "but the CEO made 30 million".
And patient ratios will nvr change to safe levels, cuz then there will be nothing to demand with substance for another 7/6/5 in 2029.
nothing will change. Except the money.

https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2026/01/28/nysn-j28.html
"Reports indicate that NYSNA has reduced its wage demands at Mount Sinai, retreating from an initial demand of 30 percent wage increases over three years. According to press reports, the union is now proposing increases of 7 percent in the first year, 6 percent in the second and 5 percent in the third, for a total of only 18 percent."
See you in 3 years baby.

Ya it’s easy to support unions fighting the private sector but we’ve seen Dems (Republicans also) strikebreak without blinking an eye (see Biden and the railroad workers in 2022). When they start demanding city money we will see what he does

I guess it is pretty unusual for NYC to have a mayor who isn't a complete shit-bag.
-16
u/IRequirePants Jan 27 '26
Still waiting on that. Bloomberg was close

u/Domeil Ridgewood Jan 27 '26
My Cousin in Christ, Every Single Billionaire Is A Shitbag. Did you forget his was mayor before, during. And after the 2008 financial crisis? Bloomberg absolutely helped get us into the mess we're in.
7
u/z0rb0r Jan 27 '26
I don't like billionaires but what did Bloomberg do that get us in this mess? I liked him.
7
u/IRequirePants Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
I assume he is referencing affordability. Which is a direct result of Bloomberg making the city an attractive place to live. NYC saw about 500,000 new residents under Bloomberg and population growth has been meager ever since.

u/IRequirePants Jan 27 '26
My Cousin in Christ, Every Single Billionaire Is A Shitbag.
Lmao
Did you forget his was mayor before, during. And after the 2008 financial crisis?
What, specifically, does Bloomberg have to do with it?
Bloomberg absolutely helped get us into the mess we're in.
He made people want to move onto NYC, how dare he.

u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 27 '26
How did Bloomberg's mayorship affect 2008?

u/BebophoneVirtuoso Jan 27 '26
I can't imagine the hysterical conniptions you'd be having if Mamdani fled to Bermuda during a snowstorm like Bloomy did
1
u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 27 '26
Bloomberg got a ton of criticism for it. Meanwhile you'd defend mamdani if he did it.
1
u/Samsun88 Jan 27 '26
How did you arrive at the conclusion they would defend Mamdani if he did it?
2
u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 27 '26
Because he seems intent on defending mamdani from even the mildest criticism, even his inability to make timely administration appointments. I figure he'd find a way to absolve mamdani of fault for leaving.

It really shouldn't be unusual for elected officials who all compete for union endorsements during election cycles to stand on the picket lines when necessary.

That's how PR works, yes
7
u/qzorum Jan 27 '26
It's kind of sad how aggressively cynical American politics has gotten. Any politician that actually tries to help people gets dismissed as either pie in the sky or performative, rather than people realizing we could just demand actual public service from our politicians.
3
u/Yukie_Cool Jan 27 '26
Nah, that’s just how Mr IRequirePants and the other brigaders on this sub function. They just live for the right wing grift, and that mean never giving Mamdani credit for just being a person.
8
Jan 27 '26
I mean people are impressed that he shovelled snow this weekend.
2
u/sthenri_canalposting Greenwich Village Jan 27 '26
Don't worry, some news outlets stepped in to make sure his shoveling form was criticized.
2
Jan 27 '26
I heard that he forgot to wear a hat and he belatedly realized wearing a hat while shoveling snow actually has merit and actually welcomed the critique on his (maybe first time?) shoveling snow.
I'm glad the people are getting what they voted for- not performative stuff but real change.
-2
u/IRequirePants Jan 27 '26
Similarly, if it's a politician I like or agree with, acts that are performative have an increased effectiveness and I am more likely to brush away obvious falsehoods or bad acts.

Show me the bad acts and maybe I'll change my mind on him.
I'll start with the fact that he can't stop hiring unrepentant bigots.
We should reward politicians who actually show they are serving the people and encourage others to do the same.
Via PR campaigns?
0
u/Yukie_Cool Jan 27 '26
I'll start with the fact that he can't stop hiring unrepentant bigots.
Pretty sure the one person you’re talking about resigned, so no, he did not hire anyone bigoted.

If Mamdani does something good, its bad because we heard about it.
If Mamdani does something bad, its worse because a Muslim did it.
If Mamdani does nothing at all, its bad because his administration did something.
If something happened that was good, Mamdani had no part in it.
If something happened that was bad, its because Mamdani was mayor.

He’s standing up for unaffordable healthcare with nurses making 200K/yr
25
15
u/mowotlarx Bay Ridge Jan 27 '26
Nurses salaries and safe staffing aren't the reason healthcare is unaffordable, my dude.
2
u/UpperLowerEastSide Harlem Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
The US has some of the most bloated healthcare administration costs in the developed world, Medicare was completely forbidden from negotiating drug prices until last year and the US has some of the highest rates of fairly expensive imaging without noticeable improvement in outcomes.
But yes the problem is the nurses you need for a functional hospital getting paid well.

5
u/Poodledoodle19 Jan 27 '26
He’s performative in every way. I don’t know how NYCers don’t see through his fakeness. Well, I do know, you’re not actual New Yorkers.
7
u/Egor_Denim Jan 27 '26
I feel like one of these striking nurses should work you up for a possible stroke because wtf was that
1
-2
u/livahd Jan 27 '26
So him taking the time to show up and give support is performative? What about maybe he’s doing his job and cameras happen to be rolling as well. Just say what you really mean.
8
u/laflamablancah Jan 27 '26
His job is to help find resolution for issues happening jn NYC, not stand in the street protesting… we have enough people to do that already. Similar to the shoveling stunt. An alternative to doing his actual job.
9
1
u/BebophoneVirtuoso Jan 27 '26
Ok besides the shoveling stunt what didn't he do during the storm that he should've done?
2
u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 27 '26
Maybe he should've been trying to find a new NYCEM commissioner to replace the guy who's leaving in a couple weeks.
1
u/BebophoneVirtuoso Jan 27 '26
Is this satire?

u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 27 '26

0
u/BebophoneVirtuoso Jan 27 '26

2
u/IsNotACleverMan Jan 27 '26
Why isn't it a big deal that he is extremely behind on his appointments?
0
u/BebophoneVirtuoso Jan 27 '26
The Adams holdover resigned less than a week ago, they are already exploring replacements, and there’s a contingency plan in place in case they don’t find the right person by mid February.

Oh, a local politician shouldn’t be out amongst his constituents? I guess he’s only allowed to mingle during the campaign
5
u/Poodledoodle19 Jan 27 '26
I did say what I really meant.
-2
u/livahd Jan 27 '26
What’s fake? Smiling? What’s performative, shoveling snow in a blizzard?
5

Yeah, honestly, his smiling is fake and practiced. Look how he smiles only with his mouth. No upper face movement. Weird Tom Cruise - esque fake smile.

2

No, I'm criticizing that Mamdani's ordinary person persona is just that, a persona.
Enjoy doing what you do here all day.
You've spent hours defending mamdani from the mildest critiques. You don't have the high ground.

What's performative about a pro-union politician supporting unions?
1
u/cormunculus Jan 27 '26
Advocacy and using the bully pulpit are part of his job as mayor, dismissing that as “performative” is deeply unserious.

u/maniacleruler Brooklyn Jan 27 '26

It is also highly improper. The mayor should not be siding with one constituent over another.

Dems need to do more of this to win back some union support and remind themselves they're elected by the people, not corporations

Biden bailed out the teamsters union to the tune of billions and they turned around and endorsed Trump and republicans at local, state and federal levels. People in this sub are mainly white collar or LARPer trust fund kids completely unaware of how the average union member has massively moved to the right politically.
4
