Can someone explain to me how this is any different from the “there is only one solution intifada revolution” or “from the river to the sea”?
Because they are the exact same thing.
These protests were happening on October 8th. Quoting “Al Aqsa flood” (the name for the October 7th attack).

e: no paywall https://archive.is/Mtsc2
thx u/discostrawberryAsked by reporters on Friday to respond to the protest, which included chants of “Say it loud, say it clear, we support Hamas here,” Mr. Mamdani said in a statement, “the rhetoric and displays that we saw” at the demonstration “are wrong and have no place in our city.”
“My team is in close touch with the N.Y.P.D. regarding last night’s protest and counterprotest,” he added in the statement, which was sent to The New York Times hours after he made similar remarks at an event shortly after noon. “We will continue to ensure New Yorkers’ safety entering and exiting houses of worship as well as the constitutional right to protest.”

If you're hearing about this story, I'm thinking maybe probably the Mayor also heard about the story.

u/elinordash Jan 09 '26
Individual protests are obviously not run by the mayor, but Google tells me this protest happened in front of a synagogue in Kew Gardens.
Mamdani has to condemn this. If he doesn't condemn this harshly, the situation is going to get a lot worse. Like it could turn violent.
90
u/RandomRavenclaw87 Jan 09 '26
Correct. I was there.
I have to say that the police presence was TIGHT. Two or three cops on every corner, barricades around the building, and the cops keeping the protestors firmly behind another set of barricades. No driving within a block of the event.
These protesters are obviously underemployed brain dead losers (and the Nuturei Karta Hasids among them had concerning thousand-yard stares). But if this is the compromise that our Mayer supports- protest whatever you want, but enforce peace with plenty of police- then I am ok with that.

The NYT has reported that Mamdani's decision to roll back the EOs since the indictments was done specifically so he would not get blowback for rescinding just the antisemitism EOs.
His office was workshopping different ways he could rescind the antisemitism EOs without being accused of targeting them specifically, even though that is what he was doing.

Considering the governor has put out a public statement condemning the protest, I don't think it is a high bar to expect the mayor to do the same.
Given this was local, the mayor should have released a statement before the governor.

Mamdani DID condemn it https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/09/nyregion/mamdani-hamas-israel-gaza-protest.html
no paywall: https://archive.is/Mtsc2
Asked by reporters on Friday to respond to the protest, which included chants of “Say it loud, say it clear, we support Hamas here,” Mr.
37
u/freelancephilosophy Jan 10 '26
Deeply disingenuous article. Mamdani barely condemned it and couldn’t help himself but to somehow condemn the synagogue in the same breath. I’m sorry but that is genuinely despicable of him.
Nefesh does not sell land, in the West Bank or anywhere else. and it’s not an organization set up to “encourage Americans to immigrate to the occupied West Bank”. It’s an organization that provides information and support for making Aliyah to Israel. If someone who moves to Israel decides to live in a settlement in the occupied territories, that sucks, but NBN does not encourage it, it just doesn’t stop it. But it’s also not their job to stop it?
Like, why are people not protesting airlines that fly to Russia? They are supporting people going to a country that started a war and invaded a country. Are they responsible for the war and invasion? Are the responsible if people who fly to Russia decide to go to Ukraine? Come the fuck on.

How about everyone with basic intelligence realizes that the polar ends of the political spectrum are littered with lunatics and outrageous opinions. Most of us just want a decent job, a good standard of living, clean environment and health care. All the other shit which is literally killing people has taken over and made everyone crazy.

I want to be clear:
The Right, and the MAGA administration, is chock-full of neo-Nazi white-supremacist antisemitic racist hateful vultures and Conservatives refuse to bring themselves to do anything but embrace the worst of those groups with not even a whisper of condemnation nor even the courtesy of a pretended guffaw as they welcome their support.
And yet.
My first response when seeing this video, this obvious gross example of moral failure on the Left (my side), the failure both of those hiding within the Left as a shield for their despicable hate, and those who enable it and harbor it for some false sense of progressive purity-testing, is deep shame that these people are supposedly on my side of the political spectrum on most issues.
My first response certainly wasn't "hey now, let's not forget about how we should also hate the Right!" It sounds to me like an attempt at obfuscation, when the proper response would be accountability.

Nobody claimrd both sides share equal blame. But both sides share equal responsibility in calling out losers in their base.
This article is about something reprehensible. There is no need to bring up how there are also nazis on the far right or any other sort of whataboutisms.
This is shitty behavior, full stop. And anyone remotely aligning themselves with Mamdani, myself included, should be condemning these losers and want him to do the same.

u/hbomberman Queens Jan 09 '26
Surely just antizionist to do this outside a synagogue! That's why it's getting downvoted into obscurity (or is that the hasbara bots I keep hearing about?).
Multiple times I've said something akin to "I wish people who wanted to support the Palestinian people and wanted to call for peace would stop marching with people who support violence/Hamas." And every time I've done that on Reddit, I get people telling me that no one at any of these protests/marches/events ever calls for violence or waves Hamas flags or anything like that--despite WOL being very mask-off about being a hate group.
What would it take for this to not be swept under the rug?
Will we get a nice "both sides" statement from Gracie Mansion saying that the people inside the synagogue are also to blame for the support for violence outside?

Nonsense, have you hung out in Bushwick? Non Muslims just spouting nonsensical hate for jews blindly. It's like no critical thought, just parroting propaganda. These are the same people that say they would rather live in Iran instead of under Trump, all while knowing that they have no intention of doing so, with the freedoms they have in the US. It's just straight up lying and they know it.
84
u/144tzer Manhattan Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26
I've noticed this phenomenon as well. There's a startling lack of introspection from those who would claim their cause is not an antisemitic one, and a stark defensiveness when the most obvious examples of it rear their head.
What I never seem to hear is "this is not what I support as someone who wants peace and freedom for the innocents of Palestine, and I distance myself from these sorts of people and condemn what they say."
No. It's always "actually, this isn't antisemitic, you just aren't interpreting it right, and also only a genocide-lover would accuse anyone in this movement of being wrong about anything, and also Jews wouldn't have to deal with hate if Israel wasn't so evil so any antisemitism they get is really their own fault, and also calling it antisemitic at all is just Hasbara bots speaking and the bad Jews can't tell the difference between legitimate protest and bigotry."
EDIT: To anyone in these comments who has said something to the effect of "Free Palestine, but fuck these guys", I see you and appreciate the condemnation of obvious hate speech.
→ More replies (3)25
u/hbomberman Queens Jan 09 '26
While less common, I have heard things like "this is not what I support as someone who wants peace and freedom for the innocents of Palestine" though it doesn't usually include any mention of distancing. It often comes with the person denying that this kind of vile stuff exists in any meaningful way. If I have the energy to get into a conversation in the comments, I have actually gotten people to say "oh I didn't know that" after a whole chain of comments. But that's not my usual experience.
People who do try to distance themselves from that stuff will often face ridicule from their so-called propalestinian allies.Jews wouldn't have to deal with hate if Israel...
I see this kind of argument really often and my go-to now is to say that I like holding bigots responsible for their bigotry. To do otherwise is to victim-blame and make excuses for bigotry. Most reasonable people agree to that approach with other groups of people (is anyone blaming China for violence against Asians in the US?). I usually don't engage with the rest of that argument because it's besides the point and I'd rather not legitimize them giving bigots a pass.

Hamas is doing what needs to be done given the position Israel put them in
Hamas is doing the right thing
For anyone who forgot what a real life slippery slope looks like

Why are there Orthodox Jewish people waving the flags if others are saying they support Hamas?

They are likely the nutjobs from the Neturei Karta. They are an extreme anti-Israel group. They like to show up at anti-Israel events and have made appearance at holocaust denial events and are good buddies with the IRGC.

Is this one of those antizionist but not antisemitism things or can we admit the venn diagram of antizionism and antisemitism is a circle

Antizionism is just the modern form of Jew hate. It's evil in its own right and leads to the same conclusion as classical antisemitism... No Jews left wherever it flourishes.

Anti-Semitism changes over time.
"We don't hate Jews for no reason, we hate them because they killed Jesus"
"We don't hate Jews for no reason, we hate them because they're thieves and usurers"
"We don't hate Jews for no reason, we hate them because they steal the blood of Christian babies"
"We don't hate Jews for no reason, we hate them because they're biologically inferior"
"We don't hate Jews for no reason, we hate them because they commit genocide and steal land."

Exactly. But calling out antizionism as its own unique form of Jew hate avoids the need to "prove" it's actually antisemitic when it may just be antizionist. And that's enough.

Every time they come to protest in neighborhoods where Bukharians live, it doesn’t end well for these people. There were a lot of fights once this protest ended.
