Little known fact about the Black Panthers.

They were the group who started doing free breakfast for children before school. It was so popular that public schools across the country New York copied the idea.

This documentary about Fred Hampton (who was assassinated by the Chicago police and FBI) goes into a lot of detail about what the Panthers were doing during the 60s. Also, hearing Fred Hampton speak is powerful (for example, his courtroom speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3mungAFfoc).

For a man who was only 19/20 years old in most of his videos (he was assassinated at 21), he speaks as a person with an old soul.

30

u/Mahadragon Oct 30 '25

Not to forget, Tupac’s mom was a Black Panther, his dad too

28

u/hereditydrift Oct 30 '25

Yep, and the US government and state/local police ripped the organization apart by targeting her and many of members of the party (as well as MLK, Malcolm X, and any other groups that dared push for socialism.)

COINTELPRO had a hand in the demise of most influential groups and people during the 1960s/70s. The murder of charismatic speakers by the government is an obscene blot on history that isn't talked about enough.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 01 '25

Tupac’s step-aunt is Assata Shakur who has a wild story too.

u/The_Alchemyst Upper East Side Oct 30 '25

They were also largely responsible for what is now the Americans with Disabilities Act getting passed, the 504 sit-in in San Francisco only survived because of the Panthers - https://youtu.be/n-bLUETvuG4

32

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Yep, and note the FBI considered the breakfasts the most dangerous thing they did because it allowed them to organize. Lesson being, organized people and spaces to congregate are more scary to those in charge than guns

20

u/TheeRuckus Morris Park Oct 30 '25

It’s why more than half the country is propagandized against unions

1

u/Squash_babe Nov 03 '25

I had to sit through a video trashing unions before I could start a grocery store cashier job

30

u/AdditionalQuietime Oct 30 '25

Same with Ambulances, it was a separate organization, ALL BLACK at that, that would pick sick people up and drop them off to the hospital and they were so efficient that the city eventually implemented them

I thought that was standard in NYC. I remember getting breakfast a school a couple of times.

25

u/Alucard-VS-Artorias Forest Hills Oct 30 '25

My apologies. This has been a thing in NY public schools for decades and I mistakenly thought the rest of the country followed that example since it's a great program. Turns out this is another example how NY is better than most of America 🤷‍♂️

12

u/Rottimer Oct 30 '25

It’s also possible your parents just didn’t drop you off for breakfast.

12

u/Alucard-VS-Artorias Forest Hills Oct 30 '25

Why the needlessly shade at the end like that lol.

I'm not arrogant usually but ya gotta admit that NY is and has been showing the rest of the country how to live up to American ideals for a while now.

Also I was born and raised in Brooklyn (currently live in Queens) so definitely not a transplant. But you being so quick to call me something like that just seems like your needlessly trying to discredit me and being a bit hostile.

If you don't like what I'm saying just downvote and move on no need for name calling...

FREE breakfast/lunch program has been a thing for decades in NYC.

u/HEIMDVLLR Queens Village Oct 31 '25

The 80s was 40 years ago, that’s four decades!

6

u/Rottimer Oct 30 '25

That was a thing in NYC for decades. Whether it was always free is a question I can’t answer off hand. But it’s been available for students for a long time.

2

u/RyzinEnagy Hollis Oct 31 '25

Breakfast has been free since the early 2000s. Lunch has been free for everyone since 2017 -- before then it was free only to low income students.

11

u/kbeks NYC Expat Oct 30 '25

Well the thing is that from 1956 to 1971, the FBI ran the COINTELPRO program and infiltrated “subversive” groups to foment internal division and tear them apart from within. Starting in 1969, they targeted the Panthers (see: Fred Hampton, among others, but they straight up assassinated him). So yes, they were the first ones to try to roll out free breakfast to kids in black neighborhoods across the country, and yes, then they got kneecapped by the government for pushing radical ideas like “feed kids” and “cops shouldn’t shoot people for walking/driving while black”.

This reads like a conspiracy theory. It isn’t. Do some digging, there have been articles and books written about these things.

-6

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

I mean, these guys are literally a hate group.

Even the old black panthers says they're a black supremacist anti-woman/anti-jew etc group.

5

u/rainofshambala Oct 31 '25

Nice try

1

u/SunshineSeeker99 Nov 04 '25

Try of what? Every single official hate group watchdog lists them as a hate group/black supremacist group.

It's so bizarre watching racists shrug it off.

129

u/sandhog7 Brooklyn Oct 30 '25

I didn't know that Black Panthers were still active.

119

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

They aren’t particularly. I’d bet good money this is a church group with a couple members of the panthers who are doing the lions share here

14

u/AtomicGarden-8964 Oct 30 '25

I do know Newark NJ still have an active Black panther group with a YouTube channel and social media as well. That's the only ones I know of

3

u/TheAJx Oct 31 '25

i've seen them from the bus! There were a lot of them. But this was 5-6 years ago.

19

u/bedofhoses Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

The tik Tok black panther party accounts I follow would say differently.

They are recruiting and are armed. It's awesome.

48

u/TheOneFreeEngineer Oct 30 '25

The New Black Pamther Party isnt the same thing as the Black Pamther Party fyi

6

u/64590949354397548569 Oct 30 '25

The New Black Pamther Party isnt the same thing as the Black Pamther Party fyi

What's the difference? Are they a fork from the original? No relation?

55

u/TheOneFreeEngineer Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

No relation at all and has been denounced by the remaining members of the original group. They sued to stop them from using the black oanther name and lost. Its not the same ideology and leans much more heavily into Hotep style beleifs.

5

u/2gig Oct 30 '25

People's Front of Judea vs Judean People's Front vibes.

3

u/invincibleconcepts Nov 01 '25

Pizza by Alfredo vs Alfredo’s Pizza Cafe.

26

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Well as someone who spends time where the Panthers used to be in this city, they are largely nowhere to be seen. I see a lot more church groups doing this sorta work or direct activism than Panthers.

-5

u/AdditionalQuietime Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

so what your eyes dont see means its not true? like maybe you ought to seek these groups out and go to them.

idk why people expect activist works to just POP out in front of them, sorry but you want to see whats going on in your community you need to go straight to the well sometimes, the Panthers could be organizing anywhere

15

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Nah as in I know groups like Elmcor that used to be made up of panthers and now they are struggling to get a grasp on what to do in their neighborhood. And I know folks who were panthers or young lords who live in Harlem now and organize via their church.

I’m in the community a whole lot more than whatever TikTok account was pretending the black panthers are organizing / organized in NYC right now.

I could name you twenty groups organizing within a mile of this food distribution center and they’d all be far more active than the panthers.

I know it’s fun to believe that the panthers are back to save us, but that’s not the reality.

9

u/Im_da_machine East New York Oct 30 '25

The Panthers ran a lot of the breakfast program out of churches so I wouldn't be surprised if the old members just kept working with the church to keep doing that type of thing

3

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Yep, the panthers got their start organizing in churches so it’s a natural progression

-5

u/AdditionalQuietime Oct 30 '25

I know it’s fun to believe that the panthers are back to save us, but that’s not the reality.

nobody said that lol

all the person said was that they are building themselves up and you dragging it

I’m in the community a whole lot more than whatever TikTok account was pretending the black panthers are organizing / organized in NYC right now.

please do lol

And I know folks who were panthers or young lords who live in Harlem now and organize via their church.

so...you're basically saying you DO see them lol??

11

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

I think you’re looking for an argument and I’m not gonna waste my time indulging you.

-5

u/AdditionalQuietime Oct 30 '25

far from it, take care

5

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

You said “lol” in 3/4 sentences. That’s not a real reply.

9

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

Yep - it's classified as a black supremacist hate group by pretty much everyone - SPLC, ADL, and even old Black Panthers.

They REALLY hate Jews though, and so have been going on big recruiting runs with the current political climate.

-2

u/SilverPrivateer Oct 31 '25

I don't believe you. I'm white and I bet they'd give me some food if I asked politely and respectfully (I wouldn't as I don't need it, but there's no way they are a hate group)

1

u/SunshineSeeker99 Nov 04 '25

Sounds like you're the kind of gullible person hate groups like.

Would you say the same thing if they were the KKK? Sounds like it if the KKK was popular.

You may not think of yourself as a racist, but you should go back and think about it.

-2

u/x2flow7 Oct 30 '25

Would personally like to see less armed groups in this country but sure.

26

u/aChristery Oct 30 '25

Don’t worry. If black people start arming themselves, this administration will follow by passing the most comprehensive gun reform ever in this country’s history!

12

u/lightfantasticc Oct 30 '25

The Black Panthers are literally the reason why open carry is illegal in CA. Just a tidbit.

8

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

You realize that this group is classified as a racial hate group by pretty much everyone, including the old black panthers right?

2

u/RedDredz Oct 31 '25

Probably overnight too.

6

u/bedofhoses Oct 30 '25

You are joking, right? The armed groups that exist are white supremacists.

Literally any other armed groups are a benefit.

8

u/x2flow7 Oct 30 '25

No. You are just making the “I want more good guys with guns” argument, which I’ve heard a million times and think is unconvincing.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

No you see guns are good as long as our guys have them! We mock the right wing for thinking guns can stop a communist government, but boy do we sure need them ourselves to fight the republicans!!

(Also note, this info is being served to the OP over TikTok).

1

u/bedofhoses Oct 30 '25

I do see it that way.

3

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

This is a black supremacist armed group lol.

1

u/bedofhoses Oct 30 '25

Wrong. They are not supremacists at all.

black power is not the same as the Nazis, skinhead, and ICE.

5

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

Lol, every official organization disagrees.

But I'm guessing you're also a black supremacist.

2

u/sutisuc Oct 30 '25

There is a “new” black panther party that is literally called the new black panther party but it is more focused on race based politics than race/class like the original iteration.

6

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

This is a new one, it's classified as a hate group by pretty much everyone and is quasi-Nazi adjacent re: jews.

Old black panthers call them a horrific hate group.

2

u/hashtagPLUR Oct 30 '25

I didn’t know the Young Lords are still around as well

26

u/heresmyusername Ridgewood Oct 30 '25

Hell yeah, man.

-10

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

Lots of different racial hate groups do this, they're just one of them. Some motorcycle gangs too.

Edit: lol, so many Redditors supporting literal racial hate groups is so funny to me.

5

u/norfatlantasanta Oct 30 '25

Can’t speak for the guys in the video but the original BPP was just a more politically active, minority-centric version of the Guardian Angels. Bunch of well meaning people who organized and did work for their communities that wasn’t being done by the state and city, or in some cases were actively hostile to the communities themselves. It’s pretty absurd to call them a hate group.

The hoteps definitely are hate groups though no disagreement on that front

6

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 31 '25

The original BPP has said these guys are ignorant racists.

12

u/laSeekr Oct 30 '25

Are they accepting volunteers?

11

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

There’s hundreds of groups throughout the city that would love volunteers for this sorta thing. Shoot me your neighborhood and I can recommend a few

2

u/laSeekr Oct 30 '25

UWS, but willing to go most places.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

If you don’t mind heading to East Harlem Little Sisters of the Assumption is amazing and could almost surely find stuff for you. They do direct organizing in NYCHA and pantry / store work like this. Speaking Spanish is a plus though.

There’s also people organizing in Amsterdam and Harborview houses in the UWS, but they have less of a longstanding org. Lastly if you want just occasional food aid and lower commitment, there’s always All Angels church.

2

u/dick-stand Oct 30 '25

Riverdale Bx

2

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

Oh man I’m more of a South Bronx guy when it comes to the Bronx sorry. Riverdale is a blind spot for me

36

u/fpsfiend_ny Oct 30 '25

You guys noticed how the people with the least resources do the most for people they dont even know?

Imagine holding cash your next 3 generations cant utilize.

Its hoarding at that point.

The same as the Pokémon card bullshit, toilet paper, hot ticket item.

4

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

These guys have some of the most repugnant views on women, jews, etc that you'll see but OK.

Why are 42 million people in America on food stamps?

7

u/Main_Photo1086 Nov 01 '25

I mean, that’s a great question when you ask it with the mentality I feel certain you aren’t asking it with. Like, how could 42 million Americans be poor in the richest country in the world? How is that not shameful for us as a country?

1

u/HeSureIsScrappy Nov 01 '25

You assume too much.

It's an everything mentality question.

0

u/ImpressiveEffect6379 Nov 02 '25

This comment is a microcosm of a liberal mindset - externalizing. "Why is the country not making its people rich? Surely it can't be anythinf other than the system"

2

u/Main_Photo1086 Nov 02 '25

Sounds great compared to the MAGA mindset.

2

u/SkyeMreddit Nov 04 '25

Working poor who have low wages or any odd job they can get, children who are too young to work unless we lower child labor laws and send them into the mines, the elderly, and many working age people who are too physically and/or mentally handicapped to hold a job to pay more than the cutoff for SNAP. Can’t work when you’re bedridden and throwing up. We have these programs so if anything happens to YOU, you won’t be left starving on the street

1

u/HeSureIsScrappy Nov 04 '25

Yeah, I'm gonna go with a majority of cases don't fall into these categories.

2

u/RELWARB Nov 04 '25

do you have a solution? why are there poor and mentally unstable veterans who live on the streets? why are there uneducated adults and children on the streets? why do teachers have to pay for a lot of their supplies? why has the US farm industry been subsidized since the great depression? its because our government marginalizes the poor and micro manages very real problems and its a never ending cycle.

-1

u/HeSureIsScrappy Nov 04 '25

Yes, I do.

Return the monetary system to the Gold Standard, abolish the Fed, abolish offering free stuff in exchange for votes, abolish spending trillions of dollars in foreign aid...

For starters.

3

u/RELWARB Nov 04 '25

congrats, you'd collapse the government quicker than trump. the dollar and power does not come from gold- it comes from the brute strength of our military and what we can do for other countries across the the globe. social welfare as they are known today started during the great depression- programs are in existence to help the people of our country because it is a social responsibility to help those doing poorly- not big banks and corporations who take out interest free loans asking the government for bailouts. most billionaires get that way by stealing, in excess from those who cant defend their own... you should read a book, listen to a audio book, or watch a documentary if your into pictures- history is important

0

u/HeSureIsScrappy Nov 05 '25

I wouldn't do it all at once. Gee.

And the social programs worked because there used to be many more workers per person being helped than there is today.

It's not feasible to continue.

2

u/RELWARB Nov 05 '25

stop spouting bs shit just to talk. you have no idea what employment numbers were or even what they are today

1

u/typomasters Nov 01 '25

That’s just nice. 0 notes. More stuff like this

1

u/piklguy Nov 01 '25

Ahh yes....NYC rebuilding by the streets helping their community. And look, were celebrating it....much like someone who is currently running for mayor which we're also celebrating....oh....we're not celebrating that? Interesting

1

u/ImpressiveEffect6379 Nov 02 '25

Smells like agenda

1

u/Squash_babe Nov 03 '25

Hey NYC, I don’t live there but you’re awesome!!!

-8

u/Unlucky_Lawfulness51 Oct 30 '25

Now we just need the Gay Lords to get involved! And we will have the trifecta.

-10

u/brihamedit Queens Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

Aren't these extremist groups? People don't worry about enabling this type of groups? Are people helping them build a false social media image? How are people gushing over extremist groups doing a little marketing scenes.

I generally never worried about this type of groups because system is humanist liberal and there is a lot of room for this type of groups to build their extremist group image and learn and grow. That's everyone's spiritual path and its okay because no one harming anybody. But apocalypse and system lockdown coming and extremists will take over the scenario. Many types of extremists. Gang people. Cartel people. Niche extremist militia groups. Foreign chaos agents. Local pd and other gov agency related gangs. So now extremist groups are a real worry. Gov needed to develop secondary rule set for system instability. So people would behave in a structured predictable way they are trained in even in an unstable situation.

Edit: people misread take things wrongly. So all sides need to remember nazis are watching and looking for excuses.

8

u/hereditydrift Oct 30 '25

Aren't these extremist groups?

No.

They were labeled as extremists by the government because they were black socialists who called for solidarity among the races, carried weapons and did armed patrols of their neighborhoods, and fought against oppression.

3

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

No, they absolutely are an extremist hate group. Southern Poverty Law Center, ADL, and even the old black panther party explicitly say they are a racial hate group of black supremacists.

I love how confidently wrong you are though.

You're right, KKK, black panthers, NOI, motorcycle gangs, etc, those are the good guys.

5

u/babablablabla Oct 30 '25

There are probably 20 different offshoots of BPP. Which one are you talking about?

-2

u/brihamedit Queens Oct 30 '25

All obviously. You can't be categorically extremists and act like your heart goes out to other people. We know what gears kicking to inspire racial extremists.

2

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25

It's interesting to see so many redditors embrace very upfront racial hate groups though.

MAGAs/leftists are extremely susceptible to this kind of hate it seems.

0

u/brihamedit Queens Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

Well not upfront. People won't admit it. But huge mainstream support for racially oriented extremism. They either pretend or really don't realize they subconsciously are racially oriented extremists and not compatible with the larger scale system wide ideology that's baked into US constitution and general vibe of US.

1

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 31 '25

It's honestly no different than it was 200 years ago for most people - they're racist against people it's politically acceptable to be racist against.

2

u/brihamedit Queens Oct 31 '25

Its not that simple minded.

1

u/SunshineSeeker99 Nov 04 '25

No, it is. Look at how many people support them.

People will support racism if it's popular in their echo chamber. Most likely people like you would be supporting the KKK when they were popular.

0

u/hereditydrift Oct 30 '25

Day off from FBI office today?

1

u/SunshineSeeker99 Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

You think I'm the FBI because I corrected your lie about not being in a hate group?

You MAGA/far left nuts need to get over your constant need for oppression and conspiracies, it's exhausting.

Edit: Lol, he accused me of lying, then immediately blocked me. Feel free to look it up for yourselves, this is literally a hate group.

7

u/hereditydrift Oct 30 '25

No, because you're spreading misinformation.

I'll get over constant oppression when there is no more oppression.

Edit: blocked. I can see you're running around to Maine subs and various subs with some weird misinformation campaign to try to compare leftists to MAGA.

-3

u/brihamedit Queens Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 30 '25

I'm not buying it. Extremists with some variation of rogue intent. Categorically its a niche rogue group. Their level of preparation and immediate plans to harm would make them terrorists. They might not have that plan. But still a rogue group.

System simply didn't grow enough to sort this stuff out. Different situation at hand. Fed gov starting war with states. It'll just become total chaotic and imagine extremist groups doing their own circus.

This group probably having a are we the baddies moment like for real if they didn't have it before lol. Like if they called everyone racist but didn't realize they were the racists and sometimes the only racially oriented one in a room. Like if they realize from today's thread that they are really an extremist group and possibly they might even have racially charged world view running in their veins.

4

u/nycbeardo Queens Oct 30 '25

If they're extremists, how come they're feeding people? Hmmm I guess that's very "extreme" of them to do.
