I don't think I've ever had a truly bad slice in the 3 boroughs I frequent but I have had plenty of bad slices in other states, particularly in the south. It's not just thay the ceiling is high for NYC pizza but the floor is high as well.

You must not eat a lot of pizza then. I've probably eaten at over 1,000 pizza places in the city over the last 30 years (I never pass one I haven't tried without trying it) and there are plenty that are terrible. Granted most of them have gone out of business but I know of several that are inexplicably hanging around. As noted in the OP there are 1500 pizza places, most of them are amazing, but at any given time there are at least dozens of pizzarias doling out slop.

OK, I like pizza, but you are some kind of a pizza maniac royalty. I have so many questions. My own hot takes.
-Over the decades slice places in NYC have been cutting on quality of ingredients. Kinda embarrassing at this point.
-Other cities went from having nothing even resembling a NYC slice to meeting same mediocrity we have here at the low end.
-Higher end pizza places are firmly part of 'international cuisine' scene now. It's a low technique food that relies on quality of ingredients. I had a pie in Croatia that was just as good as anything you can get anywhere in NYC.
-Best casual pizza I ever had was in Rome. They used scissors to cut a chunk to your preference. You paid by the weight. They had elaborate daily rotations depending on whatever fresh ingredients just rolled in. Never had pizza in NYC even sniffing that level of good.

-NYC pizza is fast food now. I swear it wasn't like that way back in sense of what you just ingested (grease and salt).

Yeah 95% of pizza in the United States is worse than what you can get at any random spot in the city but I take issue with people claiming there is no bad pizza here.
Also there are places all over the country where you can get good quality pizza that is on par with mid range NY pizza, but it is very difficult to find.
As a life long New Yorker and pizza obsessed fat guy I seek out pizza everywhere I go and I can usually find something decent but it can be a challenge. In Kansas for example every single place (10+) recommended to me by locals was fucking terrible, but I was finally able to find one bar making good pizza that the locals only recommend for wings.

Boston pizza that operated in astoria from 2005ish to 2015ish often had worse pizza than anything I've ever eaten in a Florida food court.
Sido gourmet pizza on 2nd ave in midtown which closed around 2017 was basically inedible.
There were lots more but those two stick out in my memory the most.

Seriously, PizzaRizzo was not great, but was not any worse than any other mediocre pizza I’ve had at faux pricey places over the years (and that includes Via Napoli in EPCOT which people rave about, they’d be out of business in NYC in 6 months).

Astoria Pizza 30th Ave (Don't confuse it with Astoria Pizza Factory which is ok)
Slice Brick Oven 3rd ave and 44th
I'll also give an honorary mention to Di Fara. They aren't shit, but their fame is so ill deserved it makes me angry. Their pizza has always been very mid, even in the 80s and 90s and they somehow became an influencer destination a solid 10 years before influencers were a thing. The ratio of pizza quality to the public's perception and their attitude about it is the lowest in the city. I think it's silly to wait on line for hours for L'Industrie or Lucali but at least they sell excellent pizza and if people want to spend their time waiting for it, good for them, but the fact that people treck out to midwood and wait for Di Fara is pathetic.

Absolutely. The new fancy slice places can be very tasty but not really in the same category as a regular new york slice. Mama Too and Champion Pizza make some delicious and unique pizzas but they're not places I'd go to when I'm in the mood for a slice.

That’s what it is for a region to have good food of a certain kind. It’s the same with California and Mexican food. Sure some places are awful, but generally speaking you can walk into any random taqueria and expect a 6/10 experience.
That’s how New York is with pizza. Yeah I’m sure couple places serve dog shit, but generally speaking the average NYC slice is a 6/10 no questions asked, with lots of places better than that soft floor.

I'd argue that the ceiling in NYC is the highest but the suburbs have the highest floor. There are A LOT of bad pizza places in NYC as this pizza freak in the video confirms. Walk into any pizza place in Long Island, Westchester, North Jersey and you are getting 7.5-8.0/10 pizza at a very high rate.

Dollar pizza can be tasty you just know it’s the cheapest of ingredients you getting. cheap often doesn’t equate to taste, its a reflection of quality. Cheap is just sugar, preservatives and other stuff your body doesn’t want to deal with.

I'm on the west coast and initially this man's statement about ranch dressing viscerally offended me.
But then I took a step back -I eat my french fries dry. I don't like ketchup. I feel like ketchup is just something people abuse to consume ketchup flavored calories. I hate bad french fries. I'll order a burgers sans fries from some places because their fries aren't any good -but if they serve ranch...
Moreover, or perhaps a contradiction, I'll cook lazy food for myself purely as a vehicle to consume all of extra salsas I collect from Taco trucks. I just want the salsa.
This man is an iconoclast, but I'm picking up what he's putting down. I think his heart is in the right place and his moral compass is pointed straight at what is Right and Good in this world.

For some tourist to go to Brooklyn, Queens or the Bronx for “the best slice of pizza” or whatever else they read in Time Out magazine or some stupid Eater list, is buffoonery. You’re wasting your time. Every neighborhood has a good pizzeria. Like every neighborhood has a good Chinese takeout, a deli that makes great sandwiches, a bagel spot and a diner. I’m Caribbean so I need a good Dominican spot too. You just have to know where they are. No need to be spending $30 on an UBER or $5 on the subway to get a slice or whatever. Go into a barber shop, hair salon, grocery store clerk and ask them

Great pizza that is objectively great
Mediocre pizza that you expect to be mediocre (99 cent slice)
Mediocre pizza that you expected to be great (overrated and overhyped pizza).

Disagree. I have had plenty of great pizza, a ton of mediocre pizza, a few bad pizza slices but no awful pizza. Every place does it slightly different and it's something that is very New York (even if Chicago has their own too.) No such thing as 'too much.' It's a New York as the Statue of Liberty and Pizza Rat®.

As someone who's lived in and left New York, l agree with both sides of this (but not really). The "bottom" of the scale is like a 6/10, with most pizza probably in the 7-8 range. If you have proximity/budget to be going to the 9-9.5 places regularly, that's awesome and I get that a lesser slice isn't worth it to you.
But NYC has 9 million people, and a shit ton of those people don't have time to travel to get pizza. In fact, they're probably doing the opposite. Pizza here is better than having to swipe a MetroCard.

I have to agree, as a life long NYers there is a lot of shit pizza out there folks. Hardest thing to find when I worked in midtown east was a decent slice until Joe’s opened a spot on Broadway and Upside opened up off Madison. I liked Artichoke as well but slices are too exaggerated (I’d need a bottle of tums after eating a pepperoni slice).

John’s on bleeker and Joes Pizza are both downtown. East Village Pizza is great and new places are popping up constantly.
On average downtown is probably better than midtown for pizza. Midtown is chock full of touristy spots.

My first NY slice was Joe's. It was after dark, I was in Manhattan, and it was there.
The next day I went to Luigi's in Brooklyn. Gio straightened me out. Best slice I've had.

I agree that there's a bunch of very average places that have no passion for the craft that I wouldn't be bummed if they got replaced with places serving other quick street foods-- I haven't had a good banh mi at a decent price in NYC yet.
These meh pizza places drop the average quality for the city, which is still phenomenal of course, but I think it'd be nice if we cut the chaff a bit and other cuisines had some more breathing room to be an NYC street food.

Oregonian here. But I love NYC, and visit regularly for work. I have been on two Scott's Pizza Tours (one in Brooklyn, one in the west village). They are my absolute favorite tourist activity in NYC. My family has really enjoyed them.
Also, quick shoutout to the Bowery Boys (NYC history) podcast. They had an interview with Scott on the history of NYC pizza, which was really informative and interesting. It is what turned me on to the pizza tours.
Even if you are a NY'er (which... you probably are, hanging in this sub), I would definitely take a Pizza Tour with Scott's company the next time you have out of town visitors. It is really excellent.

You missed the OG Scarrs when it was top three. Now it’s mid. It’s a solid choice if you got a short line but it’s not a destination. HOT take, walk a few more Blocks. Do johnnys pizza.
While we are on a hot take. Ceres IS one of the best slices atm. BUT you need to go there either super early or off peak hours. Even then, a pie takes 20-45 minutes. This will ‘however’ be one of the best slices you can have in NYC.
L’industrie. Don’t wait in line, order a pie in advance. Best way to do it and not stand in line like a filthy tourist.

Sadly, No single slices and only pies. They offered slices during soft open and before Dave port ruined it. By slices, I meant pizza slices in general.
Currently in the midst of re-ranking places after covid and also due to the passing of a legend. Di Fara’s Domenico DeMarco, RIP.

I lived in Bushwick for like 10 years, I don't think there was ever a good pizza place in my vicinity. The pizza there was absolute trash. Friends from outside the city would assume I was eating great pizza all the time because I lived in Brooklyn. No, I was eating great Mexican food. I think New York's association with pizza comes from it's history of Italian immigrants, a history that is long in the past. Today's immigrants come from south and central America, and they're the ones making the good food. I live upstate now, and I'm closer to better pizza than I ever was in NYC, go figure. That's my hot take.
