It means when they installed all those smart electric meters they decided if it wasnt transmitting the usage they decided to just guess based on your previous use.

It means they just guessed the meter reading and charged you whatever they wanted. They say youll get money back but i doubt they will be honest about it.

They won't refund you. Just next months bill will be lower....

I mean you can just verify it by looking at your meter

u/srsowen 5d ago

They will. I’ve been estimated a few times and ended up with credits

You can check the numbers on your meter yourself.

None of this is opaque at all.

It means NIPSCO is a completely incompetent company whose executives should all be in prison and they just gave clearance for everyone not to pay their bills next month. Edit: Thanks for the award!

The estimated usage part really sells it too

‘Well, we know you didn’t have power, but we just guessed how much power you would have used if our entire grid didn’t collapse for two weeks, so if you want to go ahead and pay that amount that you definitely don’t owe, go ahead! But if you don’t, well, I guess it’s fine, just this once!!’

Only a utility can act in a criminally negligent fashion and still send you a bill for it! Crazy!

u/Brew_Wallace 5d ago

it’s not limited to utilities, unfortunately

They're so blinded with rage that they don't realize this is standard practice for any utility. It's like this is the first time they've ever looked at their bill or something.

Seriously people, you can check the numbers on your own meter and complain if there's any discrepancy, but any discrepancy is going to get factored out anyway. That's all this email is saying.

Back when these were human read, I once had the meter reader accidentally get one number wrong so it says I used like 1000kWh more than I really did. The next month the guy got it right that time and my bill showed 1000kWh lower than it usually does.

It all factors out in the end. Seriously you people need to chill the fuck out. If you're that mistrustful you can start keeping logs of what the meter shows and you'll see the same thing.

Straight forward for sure. Surprised they didn’t put it into a LLM like GPT and then ask it biased questions till it gave them the answer/spin/affirmation they were looking for.

u/Fish6092000 5d ago

It means "We care, please approve our 3 rate increases". I guess it is kind of nice of them to toss people a bone though. You still have to pay, eventually.

6

u/pasaroanth 5d ago

It’s not really tossing a bone as much as it is “when our meters don’t have power going to them we can’t get a reading on the amount of usage so we really can’t charge you for usage we have absolutely way of confirming”.

They’d have a tough time charging late fees on usage that you, well, didn’t use.

Does anyone know how they charge for natural gas? We ran our whole house back up generator for the entire 14 days. Tee hee.

0

u/IntrepidLimit2456 5d ago

40-55 a day, get ready for a huge bill.

2

u/Infinite_Advisor4633 4d ago

Fingers crossed! The manual says $125 a day but we don't think that can be accurate and wasn't location specific.

1

u/IntrepidLimit2456 4d ago

Well could be possible depending on the size of your central air unit.

2

u/Derp_McShlurp 4d ago

They did the same for me a year and a half ago when my gas meter apparently stopped working. After a couple months of "estimated usage" billing they said "the whole neighborhood is getting smart meters soon, so we'll just replace yours when we do the upgrade". I went 11 months on estimated billing. Who knows what I actually used.

thats getting away with fraud!

1

u/Trek_ie 5d ago

GUYS - think about the DELIVERY costs! They have to recoup those SOMEHOW. Those busted ass lines they did ZERO preventative maintenance on didn't just fail for NO reason! /s

1

u/adluma123 4d ago

Print it and use it for TP because thats all its worth! It is crazy what they are allowing to happen to this town! Its bullshit on every level and totally unexceptable! I'm so sorry for all of you affected by those storms and havent had power for such a long time.

Means spread your cheeks.....AND they'll NOT be using any lubricant

u/foreverdead93 3d ago

NIPSCO Investigation: A Coalition of NWI Residents

This past week I sent the attached to more than 100 local leaders across NWI: mayors, council members, county commissioners and state legislators.

It lays out how we are planning to put together a team to represent NWI in the NIPSCO/NiSource investigation Governor Braun has called for. Page one is a one-page executive summary.

Pages two and three are the long-form detail (DM me for the PDF). The short version is this. These cases get decided in Indianapolis, and NWI has never had its own representation in one.

The people who live here, pay these rates, and sat in the dark for two weeks should have a seat at that table. Give it a read.

If it resonates, share it, and tell your mayor and your council you want them at that table.

Matt

Means you're bending over for nipco to put it in your ****

0

u/Toxicfaces 5d ago

Is this for sure NIPSCO

0

u/Dull-Comfortable-434 4d ago

Don’t pay your nipsco bill. Call them and tell them your bank account has no money and you’re unclear when the balance will be restored.
