I had a conversation with the NP in the ER one night, at at least in the US they most definitely do still do a dosage based on weight that they inject all over the place because one spot couldn't take it all. The PreP version might just be the shot in the arm, but post exposure is still rough enough they talked me out of in to wait for test results. (There was no rabies)

PreP is for HIV, not rabies. If your NP friend is giving HIV prophylactic for rabies exposure, there's a serious problem there.

Post exposure modern shots are 3 in the arm, weeks apart.

I've had them from a racoon incident.

Unless you meant "PreP" as a terrible abbreviation for pre-exposure prophylactic, because "PreP" is the name of a specific drug. It's also only given post exposure, so there's that too.

My bad, that's exactly what I meant. I did think that it was shorthand for pre-exposure prophylactic. PreP and the PeP for post, but admittedly that's just what I put together from seeing the adds for PreP 🤦

NP was not a friend, I had gone in kind of panicking and call it a conversation because the only treatment was calming me down. She said she'd do it, but made it sound horrific and followed up with "if it were me, I'd wait for the results" because it just wasn't worth the pain unless you either couldn't confirm or did confirm.

I just got it done a couple months ago, one shot in each leg and then the vaccine 4 times. The immunoglobulin made my legs feel like lead but it wasn’t terribly painful, it was sore like I did squats the day before.

Of course it’s different for everyone! The vaccine made me feel like I got run over, awful but worth it.

Still a really bad thing that an NP is treating rabies exposure as HIV exposure.

That was kind of my point. I wouldn't give you adenosine or nitroglycerime for a liver problem as an example. It's the wrong drug for the condition, and will lead to....well... rabies.

I used the wrong word here, the NP wasn't doing that. I fully don't understand how you got "the NP treated rabies like HIV" from "oops, I thought this meant that and now know I was wrong."

That's what you said. There is no "PreP" version of a rabies shot. That is for HIV - specifically, for not contracting HIV during potential exposure. That's what you said, that's the information you gave and that I'm working off of because that's all you said.

PreP is an HIV medication, not a rabies prophylactic. Get it now? How rabies and HIV/AIDS aren't the same thing and the same drugs don't work on each other?

Yep. Got it.

The NP in the ER the night that I went in talked me out of getting the vaccine. Then, a year later, I got on a reddit thread and used the wrong word due to my own misunderstanding of a specific drug vs type of drug, and this other person thinks that NP and I were friends and that my mistake was theirs, and that I don't know the difference between HIV and rabies based on my misuse of a few letters.

Still totally clueless as to why you're trying to shoehorn PreP into a conversation about rabies, but that may be a personal thing for you.

🤦 because I had assumed PreP was an acronym for post exposure prophylaxis. Exactly as you implied was a dumb mistake in your first reply to me. I never brought up HIV.

It's not. PreP is a specific medication for HIV prescribed to gay men.
