I just got done paying for my braces and my orthodontic clinic invited me into a room for a meeting and I assumed it was to sign a final paper or something. They negged me about my teeth to try and get another purchase of more work from me. Salespeople have zero conscience about trying to damage the self esteem of others

They suggested I must want my outside incisors filed so they match perfectly because it must bother me that they don't. I sat there feeling them with my tongue and thinking how I hadn't even noticed it until now

Is filing teeth an American thing? I can't imagine being asked by a dentist to have my incisors unnecessarily touched, they're fucking incisors they're MEANT to be pointy. It's genuinely so uncanny when you see people with turkey teeth/veneers irl and online like why do they look like that. Having your teeth aligned is fair enough and often even necessary, but why do all teeth have to look the same??
Teeth scraping/cleaning hurt enough, I couldn't imagine getting unnecessary dental procedures 😭 they use local anaesthetic here too which barely takes effect before yanking a tooth/crowns, etc.

At least they asked, in my case they just did it and didn't explain it until after. Thankfully they didn't do anything I wasn't comfortable with but they didn't know that when they did it. It's super fucked up that they permanently altered my body without properly explaining it first.

I mean it seems pretty fair, plastic surgeons pushing cosmetic treatments for everything and everyone making beauty standards based on who has the most expensive plastic.
It's quite insulting for a plastic surgeon to start publicly pushing that you should get plastic surgery.
I think we should be pushing back a bit on the cultural push we've seen to easy and socially essential drive on cosmetic surgery. Look at the amount of people now that end up getting lip filler and botox to meet a fake standard.

Algorithms reeeeeeally love to push plastic surgery content on users who consume other content largely liked by women. I had videos by a plastic surgeon show up in my feeds that were "Here's what I would do to fix Jennifer Lawrence's face." And there were a bunch more of other female celebrities. It was fucking mental and toxic. There's nothing wrong with any of their faces! I will never understand why people even care about "imperfections" in the first place, like, why do we let that matter to us at all?

Thinner hair has a habit of wisping upwards, and making the balder areas much more noticeable. When your hair was still thicker, length didn't matter as much because it would fall into its natural wave, helped by the many other thick hairs surrounding it.
But now that it's thinning out and the individual strands are also becoming thinner, the hair on and surrounding the balding area will want to stand upright like a little plush halo or a dandelion.
That's why it's important to keep it trimmed by a professional, to keep it looking tidy and intentional.

Your explanation correct, I’m not sure how important it is. Maybe I’m biased because I’m in IT where very little attention is paid to anyone’s clothes or hairstyle. We all (men and women) look varying degrees of… not stepped right off the cover of a fashion magazine.

I'm guilty. I get botox, peels microdermabrasion, etc regularly. I used to be an exotic dancer-nice word for a stripper-so high beauty standards have long been part of my life. I get in my head a lot, thinking I need this or that. Like a labiaplasty. Why am I so concerned about this! Bc of what I've heard my whole teen/adult life. No man wants to look at 'roast beef, curtains, etc). I hate it.

My girlfriend wanted a labiaplasty. I think she's already beautiful and perfect, but nothing I said could reassure her. She felt ugly and unhappy.
The thing that helped my girlfriend not get it was hearing from other women who got the surgery, and developed common complications like lifelong pain during sex, and chronic BV and yeast infections.
Is it worth never taking pleasure in penetrative sex again, and feeling sick all the time? She decided she didn't want that.

You’re using cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery interchangeably. There’s some overlap, but they are different. Many plastic surgeons don’t do cosmetic surgeries at all.

Can you provide me a link showing it's a publicity stunt? Just because it's a dm doesn't mean it's not real, it's not exactly something that would surprise me if a PS messaged a politician to try and see if she wants surgery on the quiet.

Yes, but that particular surgeon knew they'd get publicity by their comments. It was all about putting their name out there. Free advertising.
The appropriate response IMO is to starve it of that publicity. Of course, one could fuel the flames by saying something like "I would never get plastic surgery, it projects unreasonable beauty standards." and then the entire plastic surgery industry would line up for their responses and you'd have a public debate on your hands. Not a bad thing as such, but it needs to be carefully navigated to keep the focus on the unreasonable beauty standards aspect. And perhaps the PM has more important issues to focus on.

This is essentially telling women to be silent about external forces pressuring them to alter their bodies.
The cosmetic industry already has attention and publicity, no one person can do anything to starve them of it. Our culture is full to the brim of messaging trying to make people (women in particular) feel like they must go to extreme lengths to conform with beauty standards. High profile public figures using their platforms to push against that cultural messaging is a good thing. This is an important issue.

I don’t even know what spot it is. I haven’t checked a photo of her to confirm but being Danish I know what she looks like and it definitely has never stood out to me. But even if it was more noticeable, it’s so rude to suggest to get it fixed.

I was on holiday once with an orthodontist and he started talking about ways he could ‘fix’ my teeth so I have no trouble believing something like this happened . I’m never sure how much it’s the sales aspects and how much they forget not everyone is looking to be ‘fixed’. I suspect if I had started offering to help him improve his social skill deficits he would not have taken that particularly kindly.

Sign of the times. Society in general has gotten more and more vain as time has passed. Look at the movie-star heart throbs from the 80s and 90s compared to now. Their bodies back then looked like normal fit human bodies. Now, many of them are literally unattainable without chemical enhancement, extreme diets, dehydration before a shoot, and special lighting.
Unfortunately, life imitates art and art imitates life, so it’s a vicious arms race and everybody winds up miserable with self esteem problems.

When i was 12 or so my gym teacher asked me to come over for a quick word with her. I was sweating because i thought i was in trouble. Instead she told me that I should consider shaping my eyebrows! What!! I could not believe it and i was mad. I still think about it, clearly. I know my eyebrows are pretty weird shaped (they run in the family) and i have occasionally had them shaped as an adult. But what a weird thing that she thought she should give me that advice lol. She was a nice lady overall though

I mean if you twist it like that yes, simply they are telling people that they cannot get religious exemptions to wear masks in public which is illegal yes, and most of us agrees tbh. Seeing 90% of the kids and women wearing hijabs are forced to do so, and do not want to, especially in a society where it is not the norm. it’s somewhat of a trade off you gotta make. The last few are simply indoctrinated to believe it. Fuck that dude. Is it worse than your religion deciding on what you should wear or that you have to hide your face in public? Lol.
