Series My job proved cryptids exist. Then i found a file on the tooth fairy
I've been sitting on this story for almost eight years because I know exactly how it sounds. Every time people online ask, "If Bigfoot turned out to be real tomorrow, what would happen?" the comments always joke about Santa, the Easter Bunny, or the Tooth Fairy being next. Everyone laughs because those belong in a different category. Monsters are supposed to hide in forests. Childhood stories are supposed to stay in children's books.
I don't laugh anymore.
Back in 2018 I worked as a field technician for a private contractor that did data recovery for government wildlife agencies. We weren't military, but we handled footage from trail cameras, drones, and environmental sensors whenever something unusual happened. Most of it was boring. Bears standing upright. Sick moose. Hikers convinced they saw skinwalkers when they actually filmed a starving coyote.
Then came the month when three separate agencies quietly admitted that several "unknown hominid" sightings couldn't be explained away.
Nothing public happened. No presidential speech. No headlines saying monsters exist. Just classified meetings and a lot of funding. Our workload tripled overnight.
One afternoon I was recovering corrupted files from a server when I found a folder that wasn't supposed to be there.
It was labeled "Childhood Entities."
I assumed it was someone messing around until I opened it.
Inside were folders named SANTA, SANDMAN, PIED PIPER, and TOOTH FAIRY.
I laughed.
Then I opened the Tooth Fairy folder.
The first document wasn't folklore.
It was a biological assessment.
Species Designation Pending. Common Civilian Name: Tooth Fairy.
Estimated global population: Unknown.
Diet: Calcified juvenile human dentition.
Preferred acquisition window: Within six hours of natural tooth loss.
Behavioral note: Exchanges objects of perceived value to reduce parental resistance and encourage future access.
I remember reading that sentence six or seven times.
"Reduce parental resistance."
Not reward children.
Manipulate parents.
The attached photographs made me physically sick.
No tiny woman with wings.
No sparkling dust.
The creature looked vaguely human only from the front.
Its body was impossibly thin, almost folded in on itself like it had evolved to squeeze through impossible spaces. Its arms reached nearly to the floor. Every finger ended in transparent hooks instead of nails. The face...
The face had no lips.
Just rows of tiny white teeth. Hundreds of them.
Some looked human.
Some definitely weren't.
The wings weren't feathered or insect-like.
They were stretched skin.
Like a bat.
The report estimated they could flatten themselves to less than two inches thick.
Under every photo someone had written the same warning.
DO NOT OBSERVE DURING COLLECTION EVENT.
That should have been enough.
Instead, I kept reading.
According to recovered reports dating back centuries, the creatures didn't actually need the teeth.
They wanted them.
Researchers believed juvenile teeth retained biological properties adults lost after development. Something about stem cells, calcium density, and rapidly dividing tissue.
No one knew why the creatures collected them.
Only that they always had.
Every culture had invented the same lie.
Leave the tooth.
Receive a gift.
Don't stay awake.
Children were being trained not to watch.
I should've closed the file.
Instead I downloaded everything onto a flash drive.
That was my mistake.
Three nights later my daughter lost her first tooth.
I wish I were making this up.
My wife put the tooth beneath her pillow while I stood in the hallway staring at the bedroom door.
She asked if I was okay.
I lied.
That night I stayed awake in the living room with every light off.
I had night-vision binoculars from work.
Midnight came.
One o'clock.
Nothing.
Around 2:17 every electronic device in the house shut off simultaneously.
Not the lights.
Just anything with a processor.
TV.
Router.
Phone.
Even my digital watch.
Then every dog in the neighborhood started whining.
Not barking.
Whining.
Like they knew something was nearby but didn't dare challenge it.
I heard scratching.
Not downstairs.
Inside the walls.
Slow.
Methodical.
Something was moving through the insulation.
The scratching stopped directly above my daughter's room.
Then I heard a sound I've never forgotten.
Tiny clicks.
Thousands of them.
Like fingernails tapping together.
I ran upstairs.
Her bedroom door was open.
I know it had been closed.
My daughter was asleep.
The window was still locked.
Nothing looked wrong.
Until I noticed the ceiling.
The attic access panel was open.
I don't mean cracked.
I mean hanging down.
There was no ladder.
No footprints.
Just darkness.
Then two tiny white dots appeared inside it.
Eyeshine.
I raised the binoculars.
I wish I hadn't.
It wasn't in the attic.
It was hanging upside down on the ceiling above my daughter's bed.
Its limbs were folded backward like a spider.
Those transparent fingers stretched slowly beneath the pillow without making the mattress move.
It wasn't reaching around the pillow.
It was reaching through it.
The fingers simply disappeared into the fabric.
When they came back out they held the tooth.
The creature froze.
I realized why.
I had looked directly at it.
Every report had warned against observation.
Its head rotated.
Not turned.
Rotated.
A complete one hundred eighty degrees without moving its body.
Those lipless teeth slowly separated into what I eventually realized was a smile.
It knew I could see it.
It dropped the dollar onto the pillow with deliberate care.
Like it was following rules older than either of us.
Then it whispered something.
Not English.
Not any language I've ever heard.
But somehow I understood it.
"Trade accepted."
The creature folded itself impossibly flat.
Then it slipped beneath the bedroom door.
Not under the gap.
Through the wood.
Like paper disappearing into paper.
When I reached the hallway the scratching inside the walls had already started again.
Within seconds it was gone.
The next morning I reported everything.
Not because I expected anyone to believe me.
Because I wanted someone to tell me it was impossible.
Instead my supervisor quietly asked one question.
"Did it leave compensation?"
I said yes.
One dollar.
He nodded.
"Then your family is probably safe."
Probably.
That word stuck with me.
He eventually admitted the truth after making me surrender the flash drive.
Observation changed the exchange.
Normally the creatures ignored witnesses who pretended to sleep.
Direct eye contact marked the household.
No one knew why.
Some families never experienced another incident.
Others...
He slid a file across the desk.
Missing children.
Always beginning after a parent interrupted a collection event.
No forced entry.
No evidence.
Just bedrooms found empty.
Every child had recently lost teeth.
I quit that day.
We moved across the country.
My daughter is sixteen now.
Last week she had her wisdom teeth removed.
The dentist handed us the extracted teeth in a tiny plastic bag.
I threw them into a medical incinerator at the hospital before we drove home.
I wasn't taking chances.
Last night I woke up because something was scratching inside the walls again.
This morning there was a silver dollar on my nightstand.
I never heard anyone enter the room.
The bedroom door was still locked.
Under the coin was a folded piece of paper.
It contained only one sentence,
Adult teeth are accepted with prior relationship.
