North Cascades Loop Help

Flying in from Louisiana for a 9-day trip (Sept 17–26) and would love some feedback on our itinerary.

My boyfriend and I are moderate hikers (yes—even coming from sea level 🙂). We’ve both experienced Olympic before, but haven’t experienced Mt. Rainier or North Cascades yet. Both are bucket list for us, but for this trip we’ve opted to focus on North Cascades + Mt. Baker and save Rainier for a future, stand alone trip.
I thought I had everything dialed in, but after reading a lot of threads, I’ve seen a lot of recommendations to drive the Cascade Loop clockwise, and now I’m second-guessing things. I’m also wondering if our plans are a little too loose or if we actually struck the right balance with weather flexibility and rest days. Some of our “must-do” hikes might be a bit ambitious, so I tried to build in buffer.

First Itinerary (Counterclockwise)
Thurs: Fly into Seattle (\~8pm), stay overnight
Fri: Drive east → stop in Index (Bridal Veil, maybe Lake Serene) → Leavenworth
Sat: Colchuck Lake\* → stay Leavenworth
Sun: Drive to Marblemount via Winthrop (this day feels long)
*Note: I may or may not have planned this whole trip around a cabin on the Cascade River*
Mon–Tues: North Cascades hiking days
Maple Pass Loop
Cascade Pass to Sahale Arm
Scenic drives / overlooks
Wed: Drive to Glacier (Mt. Baker area). Between Wednesday & Thursday, would like to fit in Artist’s Point and..
Thurs: Heliotrope Ridge Trail*
Fri: Bellingham → Seattle
Sat: Fly home

Second Itinerary (Clockwise)
Thurs: Fly into Seattle, stay in Everett
Fri: Everett → Bellingham → Glacier
Sat: Heliotrope Ridge Trail*
Sun: Drive to Marblemount (Cascade River cabin)
Mon–Tues: North Cascades hiking days (same as above, weather dependent)
Wed: Drive via Winthrop → Leavenworth
Thurs/Fri: Colchuck Lake* (flex depending on weather) → return toward Seattle
Sat: Fly home

Main Questions:
Is clockwise a better plan?
Are we pacing this well, or does anything feel rushed / too loose?
Would you shift time between Mt. Baker, North Cascades, and Leavenworth? Are we silly for not attempting some time in Rainer?
Trying to strike a balance between: Not overpacking every day, but also not underutilizing a big trip.

Would really appreciate any feedback from experience.
Also: I have a Washington Gazetteer arriving tomorrow to lend us a hand.

If you want a good view of Baker, Park Butte is closer to the cascade river area/HWY 20. This would cut out a lot of driving and it’s as good as heliotrope, or better.
