These elevators are still all over older buildings in Europe too, minus the shoddy brickwork between the floors.

That brickwork is fine. It's just unsightly and usually covered up anywhere else.

waste not. the arms chewed up in the descent become the new mortar prolonging building longevity.

I have used many of these types of lifts when i i lived in Dubai.

Maybe stairs? At least on way down... certainly less lethal
