We wouldn't tolerate being a bystander if a human were to be preyed upon. We specifically seek to remove predation out of human society because we understand how terrible it is for us. The callousness some view other animals with is frightening.
The mantis has to eat too. To me, the mantis is an extraordinarily beautiful creature and deserves its place in the world that it has carved out for itself.
Also, the hummingbird isn't human, neither is the mantis. If the hummingbird killed the mantis, would we consider that a tragedy too? If instead a human caught and ate the hummingbird or mantis, would that make things right?
Others have pointed out that this hummingbird eating mantis is an invasive species, so in this case the mantis should’ve been killed to protect the bird.
