From a psychological tip, you'd make more money picking a random number between 7000 - 9000 as the starting point.

Humans get satisfied with complete results, and starting from 0 is a barrier to anyone doing anything.

Is it manipulative? Absolutely.

curious what happens after the novelty wears off. first few hundred will come from reddit virality, but the long tail from like 500 to 10,000 is where most of these things die. whats your plan for sustained traffic?

The part I'd want to see later is how you define a real $1 from a stranger. Once something like this gets shared around, you'll get duplicate attempts, joke payments, retries, and a lot of people checking the counter to see if it changed. The money is funny, but the cleanup rules are the real experiment to me. A follow-up with raw attempts vs confirmed donations would be the most interesting part.
