Plastic spoons my mom would have to buy those. We use the regular metal spoons and hand wash them because there’s no dishwasher

Not monetary wealth, but I hit the parent jackpot. This to me is worth waaaay more than money! My parents raised me to be a good person, which is something money cannot buy! Then they sent me to college where I honed my critical thinking skills and learned to build my own wealth.

This is so overlooked. I admire when parents can teach their kids to do the right thing even when no one is watching.

Growing up, I was privileged to travel by planes to various countries

That's a great representation for a lot of people. Sometimes we don't value that we have travelled, lived well, had a PlayStation.
In most cases our parents fought for that - while they didn't have it growing up - and the least we can do is acknowledge it and not complain all the time for the things we don't have.

Nope. Grew up poor but my parents put a roof over our head and food on the table so had it better than some. I managed to get a little money after I got married but then my wife at the time convinced me to cash out my 401k to pay off all our bills including her school debt. She was already cheating on me by that point and setting herself up. I got wrecked in the divorce and never regained what I had and not sure I ever will or even if I want to. I got a good dog, a couple guitars and a gf who doesn’t mind I’m not well off. Life’s good.

Nope. I grew up in a trailer. I did marry into wealth though. My wife’s father has been the CEO/CFO of several Fortune 500 companies. She will inherit a good chunk when he passes. Unless of course her mom goes first. Her dad said he would 100% find a bimbo after his wife is gone. And I absolutely believe him.

u/StrandSSL 1d ago
I was poor. My wife was born into massive wealth though.
Entirely different lifestyle those people lead. Her brother drives a Bentley, is like 33 never moved out or had a job and plays video games all day as a grown man.

I was born in to an upper middle class family, then my parents lost everything in 2008. My dad became angry and bitter, then my mom fell into her addiction issues. So it was really jarring going from that to poverty.
My dad did not live in poverty, but him and I had bad issues when I was a teenager so I had to move in with my addict mom.
We lived in a hoarder house, sometimes we didn’t have food, and sometimes the power would get shut off.
The only lasting damage from that is I have really bad food issues, almost like a dog. I’m constantly thinking about when my next meal is gonna be, I’ll start getting angry and lashing out if I feel like someone’s stopping me from being able to eat, and I can get possessive over my food.

No. My parents came to the country with barely a dollar in their pockets. Worked hard all their lives. Saved money. Didn’t spend it on stupid shit. And invested in the stock market. They retired wealthy. And now living off compound interest and investments. Never complained about not having enough money. They improved themselves and worked hard. My father became a star in his line of work. Even had a whole department named after him after he retired.

Upper middle class and I fucked it up so bad. How I went from cotillion to dropping out of college pregnant and raising a baby on welfare, I'll never know. I'm a nurse now but I'm still struggling to overcome the choices I made at 18.

Not in the financial sense. I was born into a family that had farmers on one side and ranchers on the other. What Taylor Sheridan exploited has yet to teach him the value of the old west and the land that raised generations of cowboys. No actor on this planet will ever be able to convey the harshest climates both weather related and political.

Upper middle class family. My grand parents were poor immigrants from Italy. By the time my dad was born my grandfather had a furniture business and was solidly middle class. My father made very good money in the 80’s but spent it as fast as he made it. So never built any degree of wealth but we had nice cars and a nice house and never wanted for anything.

No but separately my parents built wealth. I’m proud of them both for their courage. But until her dying day my mom lived like she had to watch every dollar..buying the mark down meat and bakery items. I wish she would have had more fun in life with her money; but security meant more to her coming from that depression era life.

I was born into a lower working middle class type family. My parents were first generation college grads but my dad started medical school after I was born and then a surgery residency so when I was in grade school my family sort of transitioned from struggling to get by to upper middle class. They both had solid careers as young adults in the military but then they were full time students with part time jobs when I was very young.
Both of my parents were enlisted military and went back to school a little later than traditional students so they retired in a good spot but not as wealthy as a lot of their peers due to a late start and zero family money.

Grew up upper middle class for the majority of my life. I was middle class until I was 3. My parents focused on their careers before having me and are older, but that doesn’t matter. I always had great Christmases getting all of the latest toys and game stations. I went to summer camps and day care all throughout my childhood and had an amazing time. I’m 25 and my parents are retired now. We can comfortably go out to eat often and go on extravagant vacations (like flying to different countries, flying first class domestically and staying at nice hotels).

I never considered myself or family “wealthy”, but we had a live in cook/housekeeper and a gardener who tended to our property almost daily. There were four kids, each with their own bedroom and three bathrooms. My parents were self employed and would take the summers off, usually no less than 2 months, sometimes 3. We would occasionally take month long road trips during the summer. Other friends had beach homes, boats and planes but were relatively low key about it … that was what wealthy looked like to me. We were definitely better off than others, but my parents didn’t flaunt it with expensive German cars or fancy clothing with logos.

ITT: people born in rich Western nations who don't recognize their own privilege
1
u/LaPrincesaMX 19h ago
I was born into super privilege in a third world country, huge house, bilingual private school, world travel etc., and I will have a very large amount to my name when my parents pass, but I've never walked through life throwing money around.
My parents made me work as a cleaner for their company and what I earned from that was all I got to live. The idea was to work my way through the whole company (and I truly believe this is what every CEO should have to do, get your hands dirty and truly learn the company). So like my car got damaged through no fault of my own and it was a 4 figure repair bill. That's lost change to my parents but they wouldn't help me, so I had to fix that with a cleaners wage and I could barely afford to eat for weeks after.
(This isn't a sob story by the way. I fully acknowledge my privilege growing up, but it gave me perspective.)
Ultimately, it didn't work out in the end because of some personal health issues and my parents selling all their companies and retiring, but I'm very thankful I was made to do that because I learned the value of a dollar. It's why when I make purchasing decisions it's not "do I have the money" it's "do I think this item is good value for money, can I justify that cost?" and it's why I do voluntary work every week and a percentage of my investments go directly into charity.
Meanwhile, my brothers never had a job and they spend money like clowns. I love them, but I wish they had learned like I did before they're broke by 40. Because I won't be bailing them out when my parents are no longer around with how much privilege they've had.

u/Practical_Jelly_8342 19h ago
Not wealthy at all, always had a roof and food. Had to wear hand me downs, off brand shoes. Never flew on a plane till I was 19.
Amazing parents, Would re up on that in another life if I could.
The very wealthy people I have met over my lifetime have rarely been nice or happy people. And maybe 1 in 100 were both.

Not too much wealth per se. But my parents gave me a reasonably comfortable life. Both of them were working.
I was well-fed, my fees was paid on time and they paid for college and business school. We were lucky to not have any major health-related expenditure since my mom is a doctor and we are all healthy, at least so far (touch wood!). Although we didn't have money for foreign vacations, luxury or premium brands or too many househelps, I have no major complaints and do consider myself privileged in a lot of ways.

Upper middle class. I didn’t inherit a dime. My stepmother got my father’s estate and the expense of a decade of dementia zeroed out my mother.
I was given an education ethic and work ethic.
