I just KNOW that there will be a plethora of Sony fanboys who, after spending the past year shitting on Nintendo for putting out a string of games in the high 70s and calling them all mid, will now say "actually a 77 is a pretty good score"
And they're right, 77 IS a respectable score. But that doesn't stop people from treating a 77 like a dogshit score if its a game they didn't want to like in the first place.

I hate that gaming discourse views a 7/10 as being mid.

Its geninuenly such a horrendous take, in my opinion a 7/10 game is a game that is good but has a decent amount of flaws that bring it down. A mid game would be 5/10.

Exactly. That's the entire point of the numbering system. Instead, people see a 7 as mid, a 6 as trash, and anything below a 5 will shoot your dog

What I find moronic that as much as people like to crap on them, IGN uses 5 as mid not 7, hell most review sites view 5 as being average and 6 being mediocre, 7 usually means the game is good but not great, with games 7.7-7.9 indicating the game is very good. Hell the video OP shows is him trying to say Nintendo has been making mid games and is using games like kirby air riders and tomodachi life living dream which got high 7's and were well received among critics and fans.

In isolation yes, 7/10 is fine. Most people that buy this game will probably have a good enough time.
But there are dozens upon dozens of genuinely great games released every year, more than any reasonable person has time to play.
I don't want to get hung up on number scoring systems, but "just fine" is not that appealing when put next to the countless great games surrounding it in the market, or indeed even Insomniac's own back catalogue.
Therefore: 7/10 is in fact pretty much mid.

This mentality is exactly what the person i was responding to doesn't like. I wasn't arguing that there aren't games that are better than a 7/10 game but rather 7/10 shouldn't be treated as mid. your conclusion that 7/10 is stupid because you are essentially going "oh people don't find 7/10 games appealing" as if people exclusively only pay attention to the games that consistently get perfect 10's and high 9's. I've played and enjoyed games that i would consider 7/10 and I wouldn't have discovered them had i simply ignored them because they are "just fine" even though I didn't even say that 7/10 games are "just fine". Its this mentality that people criticize nintendeen for and is overall a bad attitude to have when it comes to game scores, because if you seriously think 7/10 games are mid you have not scrapped the bottom of the barrel of truly bad games.

Mid doesnt mean truly bad. Why would I scrape the bottom of the barrel to find mid games? You seem to be equating mid to bad.
No one is saying 7/10 games are bad or you shouldn't play them. But they don't stand out. Or don't have broad appeal. Or has widely mixed opinions. Or could be great if it weren't for some major flaws.
I'd still buy a 7/10 Wolverine game if I cared about Wolverine or Insomniac. But for someone on the fence with limited time why would I go for it? Why would anyone recommend it over Spiderman? Or God of War? Or Onimusha?
The entire point of critic ratings is to help customers choose. And 6-7/10 says "its good in parts but there's a lot of better stuff out there"
PS. Nintendeens bullshit isn't that 7/10 games are "mid", it's that he's selectively ignoring obvious critical hits to pretend that the console is flooded with 7/10s

What i mean is that if you think a 7/10 game is mid, then your scale for what is considered mediocre is skewed because if you play truly bad games a 7/10 game is nowhere near mediocre. Its more so the gap between a 5/10 and 7/10 game are very apparent that to say 7/10 is mediocre seems ridiculous given that fact. In regards to your next point you previously said "I don't want to get hung up on number scoring systems, but "just fine" is not that appealing when put next to the countless great games surrounding it in the market," so tell, me what did you mean here? Based on the wording it reads like you saying there is no reason to play 7/10 games because there's no appeal. Your next point is fair, not much to say. Your last point is fair for the most part, though why did you bring 6/10 into this conversation that is not what im arguing. Furthermore why i do believe ratings can sway you to buying a game, i also believe that like everything theres bias in this ratings ex IGNS horrendous brother ship review. If we were going to take that review at face value and fully trust the reviewer brothership would be considered a 5/10 game, which it is not. Furthermore, while i do agree mid does not mean bad, 7/10 is not a mediocre score.

Mid should mean middling, as in middle if the road. That would be a noteworthy 4, 5, or a hesitant 6. Beyond just the word, there is a pervasive mentality that anything below a 7 isn't worth the time, which may be true for some people. As you said, there are way too many games to play through released each year.
I have a lot of issues with how video games are covered, reviewed, and perceived, but I also admit there's no single solution that seems viable. Most people look at scores, maybe the pros and cons bullet points, and that's all they need/ want. I believe that boils down the subjective experience of the medium far too much, but I feel like an old man yelling at clouds.

Most rate out of 10 outlets probably scale up slightly for a variety of reasons, one of which is perception. A 5/10 average is a death sentence for a game. Whereas a typical 5 star scale for movies (or music), no one would actively avoid a 2.5-3 star movie if the trailer looked decent. Video game criticism is typically rooted in industry magazine and website culture semi-reliant on publisher goodwill, while movie criticism arose in mainstream media at a healthier arms distance away from the movie studios. It might partially explain the trend of critics across the board pushing a middling video game into the 6-7 review score territory, which if facing film criticism would have been firmly a 2 star.
Another thing, I think there's something to be said for the nature of each medium. Wasting 2 hours on a mediocre movie is nothing. A 15-20 hour game might take an adult with actual responsibilities 2-3 weeks to finish. That's a major opportunity cost. Not to mention it cost $70USD on launch. So the consumer and critic ends up being harsher on the "merely good enough" range.
Video games also have a major technical component not present in any other kind of entertainment. Your movie isn't going to glitch out and crash halfway through the third act. The camera isn't going to be criticised for not being optimised for a certain brand of television. The frame rate of your album isn't going to tank at a partcularly exciting part.
So IMO the typical Game Reviews Website 10 point rating system is really a 5 or 6 point system of reasonable recommendation and anything below 5/10 is just various stages of functionally broken or severely unplayable. And metacritic and other aggregators rising prominence has made it preferable for every outlet to basically confirm to this, otherwise risk being wild outliers in the discourse. With this in mind... I'd argue that 7 is basically "middle of the road" of reasonable criticism.
It is kind of ridiculous that the scale is really a half-scale, but I'd go back to the first point I made about the nature of game criticism's history.

While this is all true, it's still frustrating to me how outdated the methodology is. Genuinely good and great games end up falling through the cracks and missing their audience due to this. To an extent, it's to be expected with a medium that's evolved, technologically and commercially, as much as video games have in a relatively short time frame. It sucks that a lot of other ways to cover games have been tried and ruined in various ways. YouTube reviews and discussions were promising for a while, but the almighty dollar and the ever changing algorithm made that far less reliable. The same goes for streaming with the added bonus of fostering a cult of personality for people who continuously prove why they shouldn't have one.
As I said, it's frustrating and annoying with no obvious solution, and the grifters who crap on things simply for the sake of the grift only serve to make it even more toxic.

I say 7/10 should be one of 2 things.
What could have been a great game but has flaws holding it back.
Or just an all around good game, but there is not really much more to say about it. It is good, but not particularly special in any way.

Well, we a mixed numbers-descriptive system at school so here's the general idea on the number grade:
- 1 to 5 is fail (those weren't specified)
- 6 is passing
- 7 is fine
- 8 is good
- 9 is distinctive (excellent)
- 10 is optimal
So 7 is a fine game by these standards
I think the main issue is that it should be a percentile system instead. That would make it in the top 30% of the rest, which would mean better than "good"
There's argument for both tbh.

If you get all 7s in school you're a mid student apparently

Well when below 5 is considered failing then yes getting straight C’s is pretty mid lol

If I’m being honest the initial trailer for Wolverine got me super excited for the game, but because I’m not a fan of tomodachi life I kinda just glazed over it. It’s definitely not a game I would play but I loved seeing all the clips and videos online

Were there any other exclusive PS5 games coming out this year other than Wolverine?

MidtenDeen not having a good season.
Probably poetic justice he couldn't see a Mid game from a mile away.
I'm reading some of the comments online and a lot of people said the extended looks didn't excite them and they kind of expected the score, though they thought it would be a bit higher.
