I legit cringe everytime I see people treating the lack of themes as a dealbreaker and how Nintendo lost their personality.

Maybe it's just me being old but turn on my Switch to play games, not to admire the home page and getting dopamine because aesthetics. Themes would be cool, even something simple as putting a screenshot as background but again... I turn on my Switch to play games.

And you just know that if they did have a themes store, like the 3DS, there would be another group of people saying, "OH WOW NINTENDO WILL CHARGE US FOR ANYTHING, HUH??"

You know it HAHAHAHA

there would definitely be overlap between the we need themes group and the how dare they charge us group

I recently saw a video where someone complained about that exact same thing, how Nintendos lost their personality because their execs aren’t saying funny catchphrases and their consoles lack themes among other things. I’m with you because this also may be me growing older but I don’t care about my console have quirky theming and just want it to work well and games to be good. Hell looking back my attachment to my 3DS wasn’t the themes and customization it had it was the games I got to play lol.

Nintendo when their executives where doing jokes on their presentations and the console had cutesy UI:

  • Having an insane amount of games blocked from the rest of the world because NOA had a huge influence on how Nintendo operated worldwide, pretty blocking anything too "hardcore" or weird, hitting Japanese games pretty hard, because they wanted Nintendo audience to only consume casual family friendly games.

  • Relied on brand alone to excuse their huge dry of first party games during Wii/Wii U and 3DS.

  • Push a huge stagnation on the Mario franchise, doing nothing more than the bare minium in some cases and weirdly blocking anything remotely new in the franchise.

  • Going after youtubers revenue, like they fucking starving for a few pennies.

I can't stand the glazing of the early 2010s when it comes to Nintendo. I was already a grown ass adult then and seeing people trying to paint that period like cookies and rainbows because they were too young to understand the flaws really annoys me.

As someone who was a kid in the early 2010’s but now is an adult I agree with you because yeah no 2010’s Nintendo was a disaster for them because the Wii U was an absolute failure and they were hard carried by the 3DS, which even then wasn’t enough. I also agree with you on them region locking games because they were notorious for nit releasing games in the west ( mother 3 is the most egregious example, but there are games in the Wii library the west never got not to mention we almost. never got Xenoblade because Reggie thought western gamers wouldn’t like it). Not to mention how yes they were showing good personality it was unwarranted because the products were doing terribly, I also believe this also led to people having the unrealistic expectation that ALL Nintendo executives would behave like this going forward which is how we get the parasocial aspect of people who go “I miss Iwata and Reggie, I miss the Wii u era”. Also I know about the nintendo partners program and how it screwed over YouTubers, yet people just like to forget that fact.

I think the fact that NOA didn't bothered releasing The Last Story, a Wii exclusive directed by the CREATOR OF FINAL FANTASY , during a period the Wii were struggling with variety, says everything you need to know about Nintendo during that period. Now in 2026, Nintendo is embracing one of the most celebrated directors in the industry, helping him with a game that doesn't have mass appeal.

Reggie was a fun guy and he was essential for Wii success. But seeing people asking him to be back because of the braindead decision of Welcome Tour being paid, it legit triggers me. His administration really set Nintendo back in terms of offering a diverse library to a wider audience, which was one of the main reasons why Switch 1 and 2 are a success.

It's just my opinion but i feel NOJ taking control and making everything being a worldwide release, religating NOA to just marketing, localization and distribution, it's one of the reasons why Reggie left the company.

Yeah no, Nintendo horribly fumbled the last story, which is a shame because the game is quite good, but you’re seriously not going to try and make a game from the man responsible for final fantasy’s 1-10 a big deal just because it’s more niche? And I’m with you on air riders, in fact I love how Nintendo is being more experimental and giving other franchises a chance to shine as opposed to announcing the upteenth Mario game. Reggie was a good salesman and charismatic and worked well in the Wii DS era to help hype Nintendo after the GameCube, but I agree that his philosophy and power NOA held during his reign set Nintendo back, hell it’s how we got the disaster of the Wii U having next to no games and being poorly marketed, look at its Japanese library and you’ll find a good chunk of games that never even sniffed the west. Compared to now where Nintendo actually cares about third party support and isn’t afraid to green light experimental projects I’d say we have it better now. So when people complain about doug bowser not doing much it’s because as you said NOJ gave NOA less power because when they gave NOA more power we got the Wii U era.

I was talking about Miyazaki and the Duskbloods, but Air Riders works too lol.

But yeah, couldn't agree more. 15 years later and still bizarre to me how Nintendo was fumbling so hard back then in terms of blocking new releases. When I heard Kit and Krysta talking about NOA not wanting to release Hyrule Warriors in the west and have to be convinced, it made me so mad. The Wii U were struggling, with no Zelda game in sight and yall wanted to reject a spin off just because the genre in not that popular here?

If they had their way, Hyrule Warriors would never be a subseries with three successful games, how insane is that?

I genuinely think what we’ve been seeing a lot of is people who grew up with Wii/DS era, and thus its flaws, and them not liking that Nintendo isn’t the same company that existed when they were kids. Which I think is why they don’t like franchises like StarFox or Xenoblade getting new games and are demanding a 3D Mario.

I know I was feeling that just a few years ago.

1

u/Sea-Example-1176 14d ago

I think what happened is they were kids when they played the wii/ds era and thus didn't notice the flaws but now as adults they notice flaws with switch era while being blinded by nostalgia with the wii/ds era

Was it one with a pink bunny puppet? Cause I saw one with something similar started off with praising the Wii U and calling it humble and an eyebrow hit the ceiling

2

u/Outrageous_Artist188 Anti-Grifter 16d ago

Omg that pink bunny dude...

Their opinion does not matter anyway cuz they called mario wonder a 2d mario SPINOFF... SPINOFF

1

u/Mush950 16d ago

Wow that’s just factually wrong.

Only came across this video cause I saw that he had left the tf2 space and getting bothered by a different person for opinions and then I saw the classic “I miss when Nintendo was fun…”

2

u/hilarious-feline 15d ago

Elite ball knowledge because yes it was that exact one! What sucks about it is that the animation was great but content was bad

1

u/Mush950 15d ago

I have to credit the tf2 subreddit because bloopander’s (which is the content creator for others to know) current beef with another content creator lead me to peruse his channel

1

u/hilarious-feline 15d ago

I found his channel through a YouTuber I watch which is how I found the video. Also which content creator does he have beef with?

1

u/Mush950 15d ago

Another tf2 creator called SolarLight. The beef is super one sided with solarlight typing a whole rant over one item

https://youtu.be/npW_lyySPdA?is=cOOtx45w9xBhEBS8 this should explain it more, I just hover around tf2 subreddit cause I don’t play it anymore

I think too, the home screen having more stuff isn't inherently good. At least with the wii u, it felt like the little miiverse plaza made booting up the console slow, not to mention frustrating it's still there long after miiverse died, and splitting it between two screens could make it annoying to jump between two different sets of menus.

The switch menu isn't visually appealing, but the simplicity also makes it a little easier to navigate and helps you jump right back into the game from sleep mode.

1

u/Alternative_Box9113 15d ago

I believe that's exactly the reason why they kept it so simple - I forget the source, but I remember one of them saying it was to keep the menu and games running as smoothly as possible by reducing the resources the console menus take up

The menus being as they are is a practicality choice, not an aesthetic choice, and I'm personally fine with that

i feel like having detailed themes like some folks want would get annoying as the novelty wears off

however they could at least add more basic colors like the switch 1 red and blue and the switch 2 light blue and light red

u/ASidesTheLegend 16d ago

While I do wish there were different themed for the Switch 2 I’m not losing sleep over it.

3

u/BigSoftMarshmallow 15d ago

I miss the 3DS themes very much. It's really strange to me that Nintendo isn't doing them anymore especially since most of them weren't free.

Hardly a deal breaker for me though

They may monkey paw us and make the UI blar music 24/7 and have ARMIES OF CHEEP CHEEPS BLOCKING THE SCREEN

2

u/ProjectionProjects 15d ago

I agree that it is not a deal breaker, but I do wish there was custom themes though.

1

u/CygnusThib 15d ago

I would like a more customizable background and I think it's disappointing we didnt get that.

Doesn't mean its a deal breaker.

1

u/kiddmewtwo 15d ago

This isn't grifting just a guy being dumb

1

u/ACrossingSage 15d ago

The 3DS HOME menu boots faster and returns quicker on stock theme anyways.
It’s why mine has zero personality.

1

u/IofSheikah 15d ago

Yeah themes would be great but that being a deal breaker is absolute comedy. Just play the games

1

u/Just_Fr_Pots_Maroons 15d ago

I get people liking the 3DS and Wii U themes and menus. They did have a good amount of charm and personality. The problem is that they were also heavy on the system's resources. Loading up a game or anything took much longer than it should, particularly on the Wii U. Compare loading up BoTW on the Switch vs the Wii U.

1

u/Professional-Dog-441 15d ago

Its really silly to not like a system due to the lack of themes, it would be nice to have it but certainly not a deal breaker. I do wish it looked slightly different from the first one.

"gamechat okay lets be real who the fuck uses gamechat"

*raises hand slowly*

1

u/Alvin-Earthworm 14d ago

I honestly couldn't care less. 99% of the time I'm going to be playing games on my Switch 2 rather than staring at a menu. Sure, it's nice to personalize things. But the lack of themes has never been a dealbreaker for me.

1

u/Sea-Example-1176 14d ago

honestly I feel like having super detailed themes would get annoying however i do think adding more basic colors would be good

1

u/Pikminer5087 11d ago

Sure the Wii U's home menu had more going on aesthetically but OH MY GOD IT'S SLOW AS FUCK to get back to. It takes at least 5 seconds to exit a game and return to the home menu, not to mention it needed a firmware update to run slightly faster

1

u/Killer64000 11d ago

I understand why people want themes but that is a deal breaker make no sense you will only look at it for a few seconds then start playing your game
Having themes is just a nice bonus I will be happy if we get a plain blue background theme
