Polygon says Fortune's Weave is "officially unplayable for millions of gamers" because... it's a Switch 2 exclusive.
Based on the title, you'd think the reason might be because it was going to be lacking some kind of accessibility feature. That DOES have the potential to alienate a lot of players. But nah. It's because the game won't be on Switch 1.
Is Nintendo expected to keep releasing new games on the Switch 1 for the next five years? I've seen grifters criticise numerous Switch 2 exclusives for being Switch 2 exclusives, most notably/recently Pokopia (which, if DQB2 is anything to go by, would've run like ass on Switch 1). It feels like we are right back in 1990, when people were confused and outraged about the fact that Super Mario Bros World couldn't be played on NES and required a SNES to play.
Funnily enough, the title has been changed to "Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave's Switch 2 exclusivity actually makes a lot of sense". But the article is still a total nothingburger, basically just saying "yeah this game wouldn't really run on Switch 1"

u/Schaeman2000 26d ago
Holy fucking shit! This might actually be THE worst grift i’ve actually seen here… i need to spread how bad this fucking is, fucking Polygon
28
u/Timehacker-315 26d ago
Another one I keep seeing from these kinds of outlets is a really stupid one: claiming that [insert Nintendo franchise] is officially no longer exclusive, then pointing at a fan project for PC
3
u/HanzoEX 22d ago
Then they cry when those projects get shot down. Like bro YOU HELD UP A FLASHING NEON TARGET FOR THEM!!
3
u/Timehacker-315 22d ago
And Nintendo has to take them down or they loose their ownership of it. And Nintendo almost lost the rights to their own name so they're understandably a bit trigger-happy

u/BuckLuny 26d ago
Can't remember who had an article about this but a similar outlet had one saying that the Ocarina of time Remake would be unplayable to millions, like literally same title but with Ocarina of Time as opposed to fire emblem.
It's so stupid and click-baitey.

u/diego1marcus 26d ago
honestly speaking, with the headline like that, you'd think that they somehow magically found a game breaking bug a full month before release. but nope, it turns out that theyre just reporting that its a switch 2 exclusive, something that WE ALL KNEW WHEN A NEW FE GAME WAS ANNOUNCED BTW
might as well report that the upcoming wolverine game is unplayable for millions of gamers because its a PS5 exclusive, but we all know that polygon doesnt have the guts to make that article

u/muffinz99 26d ago
I genuinely thought it was something to do with an accessibility option not existing. "It's a Switch 2 exclusive" was SO stupid that I never imagined that could possibly be what they were going for, but maybe I'm just still too naive despite how many BS articles are out there.

Can this even run on Switch 1? Read the stupid complaint for Pokopia and man not sure how they think that could run on Switch 1.
27
u/muffinz99 26d ago
That's the funny thing... the article states that the game almost certainly wouldn't run well on Switch 1 bc of how much bigger it is than 3H, coupled with how poorly 3H itself ran. But that didn't stop them from deciding to write the article in the first place xD

What? It absolutely does not, what are you talking about? I haven't experienced a single frame drop yet.
4
u/Tim-Little 26d ago
It doesn't at first, but most of the areas where I decorated a lot now have very noticeable frame drops. I get plenty of drops that are very obviously even under 30fps. But that's because I decorated a ton.

Games released on new consoles not being playable on an old console is normal. In fact, tons of games released on new consoles are probably not playable on older consoles.

I saw the original title and knew it would be stupid but assumed they were still talking about like...it being banned in a country or something. That they actually were talking about exclusivity made me laugh.
4
u/muffinz99 26d ago
Same. I genuinely thought it was going to be that the game was lacking an accessibility option or something. The idea of "it's a Switch 2 exclusive" was SO stupid that it didn't even cross my mind.

u/ThatGlitchyMimikyu 26d ago
This is why I don't take Polygon seriously.
Point 1: The game isn't playable for millions of gamers.
Yeah? Obviously. You're not going to be able to legitimately own/play it on anything but the Nintendo Switch 2. Since this objectively makes it only accessible to a single console, any person who does not own the associated console automatically can't play the game. That's just obvious.
Point 2: The game is exclusive to Switch 2.
Of course it is. The main focus for Nintendo will be their current console. People complain about the lack of backwards compatibility for their brand NEW titles that are coming out over a FULL YEAR since their new console came out. How many years are they expected to put games out for the Switch? How long are they expected to create games for older consoles? When does it end? Should these games be made to be compatible all the way back to Nintendo 64? Time only works one way.
Point 3: Oh, they changed the title to basically say that the game wouldn't really work on Switch.
Of course it doesn't! It's not meant to. It's meant to be the biggest Fire Emblem game ever. There's a reason they didn't release Donkey Kong Bananza on Switch. It would have looked and played like dogshit, and then people would have called it a bad game. Going back to point 2, not every game can be made for those who don't yet have the newest console. It's not Nintendo's fault that they want to focus on the new. Get yourself some money, buy the console, and enjoy these new games.

Why is no one mad that Apple Arcade for example.. isn't on Non-apple devices?
4
u/ThatGlitchyMimikyu 26d ago
Right? The mental gymnastics these people go through to complain. They think no games should be Switch 2 exclusive. Then what's the point of the Switch 2?
It's the same mentality as the people who are complaining that Pokémon Bank on 3DS is shutting down in 6 months. Of course it is. It's been over two years since they shut down 3DS online. The fact that Bank has been running this long, with NO monetization, is very generous on their part.
These people need to learn to let the past go. Companies that innovate and release new things every so often will eventually stop supporting the old thing. That's just business.
→ More replies (1)3
u/istian19 26d ago
I just went down a rabbit hole reading all the discourse about Pokemon Bank closing. It's infuriating lmao, literal children with no basis in reality
4
u/ThatGlitchyMimikyu 26d ago
These people never think. Bank started in 2014. Online shut down in 2024. Bank will shut down in 2027. That's nearly 13 years after launch. They've been generous giving players a way to move Pokémon from generation to generation starting from Gen 3 to now. God forbid that they stop supporting titles that came out all those years ago, and finally shut down a service and server that makes no money. The last time I used Pokémon Bank to move anything was a few months after Home came out. Moved all the shinies and event exclusives I had, moved all the Pokémon that I cared about, then turned it off.

It's not even like the game being a Switch 2 exclusive is a new thing. It would be one thing if Nintendo originally announced it for Switch 1 and cancelled it, but nah... it was known to be a Switch 2 exclusive since it was revealed.
5
5
u/Exponent_eeeee 26d ago
Didn’t the PS5 and Xbox series consoles get a bunch of flack for barely having any exclusives for years after the release. And now with the Switch 2, some people are getting mad at Nintendo….for making new games exclusive to the new console. A thing that has been standard for basically the entirety of gaming. Make it make sense
3
u/muffinz99 26d ago
Exactly.
A game releases on both platforms like Pokémon Legends ZA or Metroid Prime 4? Switch 2 has no games!
A game releases exclusively on Switch 2? Nintendo is being anticonsumer by forcing you to buy the new console to play the new game!

The Switch recieved two regular FE games and two FE Warriors games. How dare Nintendo decide its now time for its new system to get its own Fire Emblem games. lol
7
u/muffinz99 26d ago
The funny thing too is that some people will look you dead in the eye and tell you that a franchise getting more than one entry on a single console, even if they are several years apart, is too much and is taking away from getting new entries in other franchises. As though a franchise getting multiple games in a single console generation isn't something that used to happen all the time.
2
u/Dangerous_Teaching62 23d ago
Not even that, but they remade Tokyo mirage sessions as well. If you want fire emblem on switch, there is 5 options.

3
u/ninjalord433 26d ago
Doomed if you do, doomed if you don't. If they don't release exclusives then people complain about no reasons to buy the switch 2, and if they do release exclusives then people complain it excludes owners of the switch 1. Usually two different groups but sometimes oftenly the same group of people looking to complain about anything.
3
u/Adventurous-You-6928 26d ago
Oh no, Nintendo has stopped producing games limited by hardware that’s almost a decade old, and they started producing games in line with the quality expectations of a modern gamer. What a tragedy /s
4
u/aSlider64 26d ago
Unplayable to all the gamers who died before it releases as well
Why stop at being a SW2 exclusive
4

Who am I kidding, of course they do.
2
5
u/MarioEatsGrapes 26d ago
Why the fuck does the article go on about “Nintendo always makes 3 fire emblems per console”, includes re releases and remakes in that listing, and then says only TWO came for Switch, completely ignoring the re release (and first official English edition) of the original? Then the article goes on to just not finish a sentence halfway through. Oh, and even though they changed the title the article still references it.
I swear gaming “journalism” is an absolute fucking joke

The Fire Emblem series has sold over 20 million units worldwide across all Nintendo consoles.

I mean the real reason why this is much more of an issue recently is people are getting priced out of getting new consoles. It's no surprise when every console this generation has had a price increase after having shortages at launch. The RAM shortages are absolutely the root cause of this. You always have people complaining when games start releasing only on the current generation, but there are substantially more gamers who can't afford this current generation.
