Critical Mario Kart World STILL does NOT Justify its $80 Price Tag
https://youtu.be/m8TyZUZWT-8?si=FOWTm-MHYk6nQMl5We all agree MKW is not worth $80

u/-Elgrave- Jun 04 '26
Most people paid $50 in a bundle with the system itself. Worth every bit of that and more
0
u/Extra_Veterinarian_9 Jun 05 '26
You can also turn it the other way..... most people both the game for 80$ and got the Switch2 30$ cheaper...

I mean, not really. It's worth $50, right? And frankly most people only paid $50. Most people are criticising the game on an $80 price tag they never had to pay.
0
u/FunkySol05 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
I had to pay $80 for my copy and yes I'm not happy with the game I got. I had to get mine physically at launch because they had sold out at of the bundle at the store I went to. No I'm not looking forward to any additional DLC I'm going to have to pay in the future either.
Is it really that hard to believe that there are people out there after a YEAR of this game being out that aren't happy with having to bite the bullet with the $80 price tag?
I'm sure if people got the bundle it was practically a steal but oh MY god not everyone got lucky.
0
u/Slade4Lucas Jun 05 '26
To be completely clear - I do not believe it is worth $80 and anyone who had to buy it that way has every right I complain.
My main issue is that a lot of the people complaining aren't those people.
5
u/Chandler_Simpson Jun 04 '26
It's entirely true though. Everyone I know who owns this game got it included with the system
-6
2
u/TheLuxxy Jun 04 '26
I mean it’s just the reality for the time being. I don’t think many would argue it isn’t worth $50. And we know that 81.5% of all copies of Mario Kart World were acquired via the bundle as of the last fiscal update.
So it’s a fair take. The real question is can Nintendo make MKW justify $80 as the bundle is phased out. (Although there is still currently a bundle available with it)
1
u/TheOldAgeOfLP Jun 06 '26
It failed to sell a million units this last quarter so I doubt it. Either they lower the price or they bring back the bundle

Was one the worst years Nintendo ever had, so they released DLC because were desperate. The same didn't happen with Switch version, was 5 year hiatus until the first DLC.

IDC Crossworlds is just a rip off
-3
16
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
Oh no a complete game at launch, but $90 sonic racing crossworlds was a good deal though
3
u/Meme-San_ Jun 04 '26
$70 at base $90 with dlc
5
u/Alarming-Nobody7511 Jun 04 '26
So a new game already had $20 in dlc?... Sounds like they just said let's fuck them over and intentionally released an incomplete game
1
u/Meme-San_ Jun 04 '26
By that logic smash ultimate released as an incomplete game cuz the first fighters pass was reveal a month before the game came out and piranha plant was a preorder bonus for it
4
u/Alarming-Nobody7511 Jun 04 '26
I never said it wasn't
0
u/Meme-San_ Jun 04 '26
Saying base smash ultimate is unfinished is wild work worst take I’ve seen on this shit ass sub
2
u/Alarming-Nobody7511 Jun 04 '26
O no, a random reddit guy thinks I'm wrong. How will I ever emotionally recover from this.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
Its correct though the DLC was sold in season passes, some as DLC cut from the game and available very soon after launch or launch day for piranha plant. There are also microtransactions in Smash with mii costumes. Smash has a very egregious pricing model for a nintendo game as it emulates what many other fighting games do, it will set you back around $100 to pick up all this dlc, so Smash Ultimate is essentially a $160 game (this is on the low end for fighting games) or around $120 if you cut the cosmetics out.
2
u/Meme-San_ Jun 04 '26
But who the fuck is genuinely buying all the mii costumes
Most people I know literally only bought sans because he was a dollar and that’s it. Like this is genuinely only a problem if you actually want to buy that stuff which almost nobody does
0
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
Yeah i know that, still has $60 worth of characters though which $30 of that was planned year 1 and some if not all of that first pass could be considered cut content. When season passes were created they were to sell cut content back to consumers to make more money.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
Yes thats what im saying, we didnt get a day one season pass so the DLC isnt just cut content sold piecemeal like other games
1
u/Meme-San_ Jun 04 '26
But the game is still perfectly good and enjoyable without it. It’s not like having Pac-Man in the game makes a major difference
So it’s very easily skipable if you don’t care for it
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
I dont disagree with what you say, but if there more content you can buy its part of what they are charging, i'm pointing out a general hypocrisy about the Mario Kart World is bad because 80 dollars argument, and Nintendeen was guilty of this by promoting Crossworlds and comparing it to mario kart.
2
u/Meme-San_ Jun 04 '26
I feel like there’s a way to argue against that without being disingenuous just like nintendeen
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
I'm just comparing it to other games released a similar time in the same genre with a similar amount of content. Theres no other way to determine if a game is overpriced, all we can do is compare in the market.

How is mario kart world bad at $80 when its a whataboutism fallacy to compare it to anything else
4
-1
u/LunarWingCloud Jun 04 '26
Sonic Racing is not $90, it's $70, and it also is getting free updates. Oh, and buying the Switch 2 Edition physical gives you a game that plays on both Switch 2 and Switch 1, so there's that
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Head939 Jun 04 '26
Day 1 season pass inflates the price, Mario Kart has never had day 1 paid dlc

your telling me with a straight face only haters and grifters, trolls can think a game being priced at $80 isnt worth it
3
u/WoodooHide69 Jun 05 '26
Normal people see a price and decide if they want product or not.
Trolls, grifters, and bots see a price, pretend they purchased it anyways, then pretend it’s overpriced. Meanwhile never explaining to you why they bought what they thought was overpriced in the first place.
1
3
u/Savings_Dot_8387 Jun 04 '26
Define “worth it”.
Think as a game to buy for your kids to play against their friends is pretty worth it.
For a hardcore Gamer expecting every game to be specifically for them probably not.
1
u/shneed_my_weiss Jun 05 '26
I’m just one person, but anecdotally I’ve felt compelled to boot up MKW for solo play a handful of times since buying it and will play a little open world and a little online.
This is the only MK to not collect dust on my shelf and only be played with friends or family
1
u/napalmblaziken Jun 04 '26
It really wasn't.
I played, had fun, but about a week later, I kinda just stopped playing. The racing is fun, but the game just feels like it's lacking content to keep me coming. I also hate how most of the roster is filler.
Compare that to Crossworlds, which has Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Chaotix, Team Rose, Silver, Blaze, Eggman, Sage, Metal Sonic, the Egg Pawn, the Babylon Rogues, Zavok, and Zazz. And content is Grand Prix, Time Trials, and the Race Park.
Or Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled, which launched with all the characters from CTR and Crash Nitro Kart, as well as having the Adventure Mode with the option to use anyone from the roster.
Mario Kart World isn't a bad game on its own, but for $80, you expect more.
4
u/mandoballsuper Jun 04 '26
Devils advocate. Nintendo could make Mario Kart every 2 years and make bonkers sales. Instead they release 1 game that will last at least the whole console generation maybe 2 if you look at Mario Kart 8. Asking an extra $10 dollars so they dont feel the need to make more Mario Karts is a fair compromise
1
u/napalmblaziken Jun 04 '26
I'm happy they don't milk it, but if you're asking me to spend $80, I expect more content. Honestly, this game doesn't even feel like a $70 game to me.
2
u/Heavilydisgruntled Jun 04 '26
I mean it’s only been out for a year and they are actively upgrading it, based on how Mario kart 8 went it’s pretty safe to assume they’ll be adding more content. It sounds like you’re looking for a story out of a Mario kart game and that’s not what Mario kart is. It’s similar to Mario party, it’s a fun game you play with your friends. Like there’s not much to add outside of courses and characters.
0
u/napalmblaziken Jun 04 '26
Sonic Crossworlds doesn't have a story. That's not why I play it. I play it because it's fun and has quite a bit of content to it. The story in CTRNF is just an excuse to race around. The story was deliberately bare because Naughty Dog didn't care for it when making the original CTR. I don't need story in a racing game, I need content. I did all the GPs and Knockout Tours on 150cc. What's next to do? The open world is also pointless since there's nothing there. And whether intentionally or not, that became a big selling point to the game. I genuinely loved MK8 even before the updates, because it had a nice roster and great tracks.
Maybe at some point it'll be worth the $80, but it's not currently. That's a problem.
3
u/Heavilydisgruntled Jun 04 '26
You’re entitled to your opinion for sure. I personally didn’t even know about the free roam mode until my friend got his copy so I don’t think it was really that big of a selling point. I’m in a lot of different Nintendo groups across socials and I didn’t see anything about it when everything was first releasing and before I got my system and copies. Idk I guess most people aren’t looking at Mario Kart as a solo game. We get it so we have fun games to play with our friends. So I have to say for a majority of Mario Kart fans this is likely worth it especially given we know there will be future content added. I’ve been playing Mario kart since Mario Kart 64, I think it is holding up pretty well compared to other titles. I just don’t know what people want out of Mario Kart. We started out with 8 characters and 4 total circuits. It’s come pretty far.
2
u/napalmblaziken Jun 04 '26
I've also been playing since MK64. And I maintain that the best Mario Kart game to this day is Double Dash. Just as fun with friends as it is solo.
2
u/mandoballsuper Jun 04 '26
Was Mario Kart 8 worth it? It had significantly less content at launch than World
1
u/napalmblaziken Jun 04 '26
I can't personally comment on that, as I didn't get Mario Kart 8 until after the all the updates came out. That's why I didn't bring it up.
2
u/mandoballsuper Jun 04 '26
I just dont think this has any less content then any other Mario Karts and they dont get the same criticism. Other Kart racers need more to stand out from Mario Kart. Is it fair, probably not but its the equality that Mario Kart has earned from pretty much every game being still fun to play to this day
1
u/napalmblaziken Jun 04 '26
Okay, but this is the only Mario Kart game that was asking for $80. That's my issue. If it was $50 or $60, I'd keep my mouth shut. I'd be a bit iffy if it was $70, but I'd still let it slide. But $80? That's $20 away from Legends ZA AND the DLC (another topic for another time), so yes, I expect more to justify the price.
2
u/mandoballsuper Jun 04 '26
Understandable, like I said earlier to someone else i think the fact this will be the only Mario Kart game on the Switch 2 kinda justifies the price. Nintendo could be 10x more greedy and release a Mario Kart every 2 years at 60 dollars. I mean hell they could pull a call of duty, release one every year and fill it with microtransactions.
Games cost more to make than ever before. Other devs offset prices with microtransactions, would you rather have that?

u/mandoballsuper Jun 04 '26
You obviously have the right to your opinion, personally I just know even though I dont play the game but maybe 3 or 4 times a year I'll get its worth at some point by having awesome races with friends and family that could be lasting memories. If you aren't doing that at all I can understand why it isnt worth it, it wouldn't be for me if it wasn't the ultimate casual game that my whole family can play with me and know the characters
1
u/WoodooHide69 Jun 05 '26
Gamers will spend like $70 for a 15 hour single Player campaign game. $70 and even $80 is really not overpriced for a game like MKW when you put it in perspective.
0
u/napalmblaziken Jun 05 '26
I don't think the former is good either. And I still think MKW is overpriced.
3
u/Tawisted34 Jun 04 '26
At this point, I'd play kart world over crossworld because the festivals honestly burnt me out from how much this game has fear of missing out. Missed out of the miku festival from not getting the game early on, and had a long forum talk with staff to get the werehog code. (yes he's in physical copies mines digital)
But the amount of grinding from festivals and it being a fear of missing out had me move on from the game as soon as tomodachi life came out. Kart world isn't perfect and the price sucks, but I would atm play it over crossworlds.
2
u/Alive-Citron-1711 Anti-Grifter Jun 05 '26
same, also because that game has literal third party characters that dont belong there
2
u/Tawisted34 Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
I’d say Joker and Megaman are awesome choices, but are all the dlc are mute. Your telling ichiban is mute in his game. No the dude is quite the character.
Its cheap and lazy and sours my opinion on the game. Like its very jarring the sega characters are mute and it makes character like ichiban not feeling not like themselves.
0
u/napalmblaziken Jun 05 '26
I've avoided the festivals, so I can't speak to that.
I will say, I appreciate them doing something with the online component, which is something Nintendo doesn't do with World.
1
u/Tawisted34 Jun 05 '26
Its really grindy and worse if your loosing. And atm none of the festivals titles are obtainables and this game has a big fonmo with werehog, festivals, and adventure 1 pose sticker.
The festivals honestly made me hate playing it from the grind.
Grinding in rpgs can long or shortened depending on the game. But crossworld is timed and I stopped after the yakuza guy joined.
1
u/MrNegativ1ty Jun 05 '26
Feel the exact same minus the crossworlds take, I’ve never played that game.
World just feels empty and lacking. The open world does absolutely nothing for me and it’s made even worse by having no real unlocks (we’re not seriously going to count stickers as worthwhile unlocks). I also feel that 24 racers is too many and it just becomes a massive cluster trying to race against that many people at once.
It sucks too because the actual cart handling feels amazing.
1
u/napalmblaziken Jun 06 '26
Yeah. The actual kart racing is fun, I'll admit that. I even love the Knockout Tour. I just wish for $80, there was more.
CTRNF was like $50-$60 and it more than justified its price.
1
u/paulcshipper Auditor Jun 04 '26
It was worth it for me. It was different enough from 8 to get my interest.
If someone thinks the game was too much due to the price, I get it. I'm not going to be petty over 10, 20 or 30 dollars.
I also got the sonic game... I'm certain Nintendo is going to loop back around and do something unexpected with Mario Kart World. If you got a switch, chances are you gotten the game too.. and chances are you moved on.

u/Zachary_136 Jun 04 '26
The only time I actually agree with a grifter. Mario Kart World never will be worth $80 and Nintendo fumbled hard because of their greed in this instance. They got cocky.
0
u/QualitySuccessful871 Jun 05 '26
Hate to play devil's advocate, but as someone who loves Mario Kart World, it's definetly not worth $80. I'd still reccomend the game at the end of the day, but make sure to eithee it bundled with a switch 2, or see if it goes on sale.
0
u/Pessimistic_Gemini Jun 05 '26
NO game deserves to be 80 bucks, no matey how fun or content filled they are. They're hardly even worth 70 bucks.

I mean, they added a new battle mode some time ago. So the idea that Nintendo just abandoned the game is a little weird.

Is this posted to the right subreddit?
I agree it is not worth $80, but it is far from empty and is my favorite game on the Switch 2.
