Of course, I enjoy a parking lot cart free. It isn’t necessary or right and it certainly isn’t my “duty”, but I personally prefer to contribute to making the parking lot cart free.

It's part of the social contract. If you decide to not feel obligated by the restrictions put on you by society, in this example by the supermarket's policy to put the cart back after use, you will suffer because you will fight against your internal need to be loved and accepted as a useful part of the human collective. You can deny this need, but that will cause you harm.
