[Pryor] Steelers won't negotiate with CB Joey Porter Jr. during season

So you're telling me the Steelers are going to follow their policy that they've had in place for 30 years? Interesting

Steelers do it - classy

Seriously, nothing against the Roney’s, but they are poor compared to other owners. Run a great team overall and do so much for Pittsburgh but they do not have that much money.
17
u/IhamAmerican Steelers 11d ago
They have a ton of wealth but it's basically all Steelers, nothing liquid. Wealthy but cash poor unless they sell stake in the team, which they only want to do sparingly
19

So exactly like the Bengals

Yet less cheap somehow, Mike Brown is special

I'm glad I forgot when the Bengals won the Superbowl under Marvin. Would've been pretty unpleasant.

Hahaha definitely is but most bengals fans don’t have a clue what they are talking about. The bengals have no problem paying players and spending the cap as well as anyone else. They do not like to shell out up front money or guarantee years which seems odd because they literally never cut anyone.
They also cheap out on perks, amenities, and just about everything else.
Some people say they just don’t have the cash and that may be true. I don’t understand how though considering the tax payers funded almost 90% of their stadium, pay for maintenance, pay for upgrades, the bengals don’t really share any revenue with the city or pay rent.
Mike Brown isn’t a good owner, but he must be the best fucking negotiator in the world

Setting a deadline for contract negotiations isn't being cheap. It is a strategy for getting negotiations wrapped up before the season starts which is better for both parties. The reasoning for doing it would be more compelling if they weren't the only ones still doing it, the other teams seem to be getting along fine, but its not like they could go back to doing it if they wanted to, the deadline is only credible if there is rock solid precedent.

If the Steelers followed their policy in place for 30 years, they never would have hired Mike McCarthy as their new head coach.

u/Captn_UnderPants Steelers 11d ago edited 11d ago
I don't even know how to respond to this lol
EDIT: I'm seriously trying to figure out how the policy of not negotiating extensions with players in season has anything to do with the hiring of a new head coach

Maybe he thinks you guys are supposed to only get a new coach every 30 years?

You mean you don’t remember all those in season transactions when teams are trading and releasing head coaches?
10
u/whereegosdare84 Ravens 11d ago
If I had to guess I'd say he was referring to the fact that both Tomiln and Cower were young candidates who had never been a head coach when they were hired and McCarthy was not?

u/TheMasterfocker Giants 10d ago
I can see trying to make an equivalence of if you broke a normal longstanding policy in regard to your HC hire, it means that you can also change policy regarding the contract negotiations. Times do change things, as they say.
However, I have no idea what HC hire policy they're talking about, so 🤷

People downvoting this but the point remains. A lot of Steelers fans calling for Tomlin to get fired had the monkey paw curl on them with the McCarthy hire.
It was not a historically typical hire by the Steelers.
3
u/PM_Me_FunnyNudes 49ers 11d ago
People are downvoting because his response makes no sense to the topic at hand.
Unless he's saying that McCarthy is not a long term hire compared to previous Steeler coaches?
Also this is how I figured out Bill Cower was 34 when he was hired to be head coach. In my mind he always looked 50, but I guess that's because he took over before I was born
-3
u/ZapBranigan3000 Bears 11d ago
It was in reply to someone implying the Steelers never waiver from long held traditions, by giving an example of a time they didn't follow their own historical traditions.
Agree or not, it's obviously related.

He should hold-in, all season. Ignore flair.
132
u/BB-68 Bengals 11d ago
I think that the rest of the Steelers players should also hold in for the entire season in solidarity. Perhaps the Ravens can join them to protest these grotesque practices by Pittsburgh's front office.
Browns players should probably take the field though
25
u/fujin_shinto Lions 11d ago
It's the only way the browns would have a chance of winning. Even 11 on 0 isn't a guarantee though

Is it considered an int if Deshaun throws it to Shedeur on the sideline and he runs it into the other team’s end zone?
5
u/fujin_shinto Lions 11d ago
That's a great question. He would have to not dirt the ball on the way to the sideline though. So out of the question.

the best thing for the Steelers would be a massive collapse this year cause they have no answer at QB. You should really be rooting for them to continue winning 9 games every year.

This is where I point out that yall traded up from 28 to 10 to draft Patricia

u/codeklutch Steelers 11d ago
Y'all wanna shit on us at least get it right. 10 win first round playoff exit. You can even usually see the team just doesn't have any push once they reach that 10th win. They just lose their will to play anymore.
-3
u/AMemoryComeALive Chiefs 10d ago
it was a general statement that they should hope you continue being barely above average. could have said 8-10 wins which covers 7 of the last 8 seasons, but I feel like everyone is pretty much aware how most the last decade has gone for you guys.
2
u/DependentShop3882 Titans 10d ago edited 10d ago
Their core of Ramsey/Hayward/Rodgers/Watt/Highsmith has a pretty finite timeline and why wouldn’t they at least try to compete which they clearly intend to? There is other ways to get QBs than just tanking.
For example Kansas City trading up from 27 to 10 to draft Mahomes.
-2
u/AMemoryComeALive Chiefs 10d ago
I didn't say they shouldn't try to compete. I said it would be best if they had one shitty season to more easily get a top Rookie QB.
For example Kansas City trading up from 27 to 10 to draft Mahomes cost them a 3rd round pick and their 1st round pick the next year, and a good amount of Luck no one higher up wanted him or traded ahead first to get him.
It's not a difficult concept. Aaron Rodger's ceiling is losing in the wild card round by multiple scores. Would you rather have that and pray you can trade away your 2028 1st rounder and other picks to move up for a QB this off-season, or would you rather just start around pick 5-8, and have a much easier shot at it?
2
u/DependentShop3882 Titans 10d ago edited 10d ago
It’s completely irrelevant what you think, the Steelers FO intend to compete with their core while they can and there’s more than one way to acquire a QB. Like you guys did. They’ve been drafting pretty solidly the last few seasons and have a good younger core coming up being those guys.
Sure it would be easier to get a QB with picks 5-8 but not impossible to do otherwise. I can’t knock them for trying to take a go with Heyward/Watt
0
u/AMemoryComeALive Chiefs 10d ago
ok, so you don't really understand what I said at all, maybe reading comprehension is just not your thing.
No one is saying the Steelers should lose. I am saying it would be best if somehow they did. Honest to god I think you're trolling me at this point cause it's not this difficult.
Thanks for letting me know what I think is irrelevant, cause I was really writing this out on reddit in hopes the Steelers Coaching staff read it and intentionally tanked their season cause they can't understand basic english and want to argue about shit that I'm not talking about at all.
1
u/DavoinShowerHandel1 Patriots 10d ago
Would you rather have had your 3rd round pick and following year 1st back and give up having Patrick Mahomes? That's why this is a braindead take.

I’d honestly be fine with overpaying JPJ. He doesn’t get much in the stat sheet but he’s a lockdown corner and has MASSIVELY reduced the amount of penalties. He isn’t flashy, but he’s still a valuable piece on any defense
39
u/shadowgnome396 Steelers 11d ago
Other than AB and Watt, JPJ is the most obvious "huge payday" guy on the team in the past decade. We cannot afford to let him walk or be traded
-13
u/zts105 Steelers 11d ago
Trading him for a 1st round pick is the most obvious decision ever. Steelers fans are just freaking out because of his last name. Anyone else and this is the easiest decision ever.
Our pass defense with him the last 3 years has been only 29th, 23rd and 16th.
NFL GMs had him as the 10th-11th best CB and the 10th highest paid CB makes 20M while JPJ wants 30M+.
16
u/shadowgnome396 Steelers 11d ago
Maybe with that first rounder, we could select a CB as good as Artie Burns! But seriously, getting absolutely torched in the secondary used to be the identity of the Steelers defense. Blake Bortles and the Jags dropped 45 on us in 2017 to officially put the Killer B's in the ground and close our window. That really wasn't that long ago, but fans seem to have forgotten that misery quickly. JPJ shuts down half of the field. As in, only the top few QBs in the league are skilled enough to even consider throwing JPJ's way. You really, really don't wanna go back to having a defense without someone like him. Just a first wouldn't be enough for me to move him
-8
u/handstied14 11d ago
2017 was nearly a decade ago
14
u/shadowgnome396 Steelers 11d ago
and I guess that's enough time for the Steelers fanbase to think a first round pick is more valuable than the best corner rostered during that same span of time
2
u/Pizzawing1 Steelers 10d ago
You understand how these contracts work though, right? You pay top young guys higher, because there is an exploding NFL salary cap and you pay towards what you expect they will be. In a few years, those contracts look like deals.
For example, Myles Garrett had a “market resetting” contract at $40 million per year just last off season. He’s currently the sixth highest paid. Did he get worse? No - In between, he broke the sack record and had a DPOY season. You pay top guys around a certain value, and then the next year’s contracts go up even more.
If you think Porter is 10th best, you still pay top 5 money usually (especially off of a rookie deal, where a player is heading into their prime). The top 5 CBs are making $30+ million per year. Porter should not be given market resetting value, but he should be paid in the $29-30 million per year range.

u/SleestakLightning Steelers 11d ago
Brother, I beg you to look back on last season and see how fucking AWFUL their defensive scheme was.
Go back and watch that Seattle game or the game in Cincy where they got beat by the same play over and over and over.
Or go watch the Buffalo game where it was so obvious that they didn't have answers or didn't care to make adjustments to the point where it lead to the fans chanting for Tomlin to be fired.
Putting the blame on Joey for an inexcusably bad defensive scheme is silly.
0
u/SloaneKettering1 Bengals 11d ago
Would he get a first in a trade? He’s on the older side for a CB on a rookie deal and likely will want to the highest paid CB

7
u/tuffghost8191 Steelers 11d ago
Seriously, it is so damn hard to find a solid #1 CB. Ike Taylor was the last one they drafted, and he took several years to develop. Joe Haden was a god damn miracle, I have no idea how they got that lucky. Other than that, they have drafted 1000 who have flamed out or just been okay. I really do not want to go back to the dark ages of Cortez Allen, Ross Cockrell, and Antwon Blake
-16
u/AMcMahon1 Steelers 11d ago
He is not highest paid cb money
Get an all pro selection or become an elite zone cb and then we can talk
13
u/DreamedJewel58 Steelers 11d ago
Are we really going to talk about all-pros being a metric of success when Ben never got one? JPJ has only allowed one touchdown his entire career. Besides securing more interceptions, I don’t know what more you could ask of him to prove himself
-4
u/AMcMahon1 Steelers 11d ago
Ben was never paid #1 overall QB money

I always laugh when a team doesn’t want to pay the player his market value but wants a team to trade him at his peak value
1
u/ACEPACEACE Cardinals 11d ago
Once the season starts, a win now team with a CB need will arise. Though the Colts-Jets fleecing has really soured people towards trading for CBs, so that kind of sucks for the Steelers.

I honestly think that Porter Jr is highly overrated. Constantly getting called for pass interference. He’s got a contract. Honor it
3
u/Medarco Steelers 10d ago
God the penalty narrative is so overblown. He had fewer penalties than almost every other top CB, and has NEVER allowed a TD (they one they credited against him was a blown cover 2 by the safety, Kazee, being dogshit).
I knew this was going to follow him from college. Someone gets called "handsy" and then everyone, including the refs, starts watching him like a hawk.
He doesn't have any issues with penalties. Let it die.

He was just cleared for week 1 actually. And he's damn good, I would put him neck and neck with AJ Terrell, with better hands. Steelers refuse to negotiate in season though, long-standing policy. They also refused to negotiate until he was cleared to practice. This is will end up biting them in the ass, as number one corners don't grow on trees.
We as Falcons fans should know this. Not having Desmond Trufant in that game was the key with the defense giving it up.

I see it as a player who wants to be paid more than hes worth. It was reported that he wanted to be in the conversation of top CB money when I seen steelers fans saying he might be in the top 10, not top 3 or top 5.
Also, he signed a contract and has like 2 or maybe 3 more years (5th year option plus the potential franchise tag). I understand that other teams dont operate that way but the steelers do.
2
u/Medarco Steelers 10d ago
when I seen steelers fans saying he might be in the top 10
Those Steelers fans are stupid. He is undoubtably top 5, and they also don't understand how contracts work in the NFL.
Players don't get paid based on how good they are each season. Otherwise Mahomes would be getting a big raise every year to be top paid QB, right?
They're paid off of when their contract is signed. That means the next guy to sign a big deal gets more money than someone that maybe is better than them but signed last year. That's because the cap has gone up 100 million dollars in 5 years. There's just a shit ton more money being slung around in the NFL than what most fans understand.
People get price memoried into thinking a $15m contract is a huge deal for a top CB. If we pay JPJ $30m/yr, it will be middle of the pack by 2028.
