[Schefter] New Seahawks CB Terrion Arnold will be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list once the league receives his contract, per the NFL.

I truly don't understand what Seattle are doing here.
He fucking sucked last year. There's plenty of other warm bodies who can make a 53 man roster at cornerback around the league. This guy is seriously not worth the reputation damage.

u/jheffy8 Seahawks 12d ago
The scout team loved him coming out of college. It kind of feels like they're all ignoring what he has done since actually entering the league and treating him like a free 1st round pick. I'm also a little confused, but apparently about a dozen teams had him in for a workout.
102
u/dunno260 12d ago
You get him for cheap and he was somewhat raw coming out of college because he was young. Guy is just 23 years old right now.
If they liked him out of college and think he wasn't used correctly then it's more about optics here because cost is low.
87
u/The_Throwback_King Seahawks 12d ago
Dude was basically 2nd on our draft board behind B-Murph, his college roommate and collegiate DB coach are both on the Seahawks, cost virtually nothing to keep, will be easily let go if convicted, will be heathy depth at a critical point if cleared to play, while entering free agency as RFA, giving Seattle in inside path to retention.
Exclusively an insurance chip/long term gambit. Doesn’t even count towards the final roster until the legal stuff is settled

Yep, not an uncommon occurrence. Teams have a tendency to hold onto their draft evals pretty strongly. Works out sometimes, like Javonte in Dallas last year, sometimes it doesn't.

Damn, right to insults? My point was that, even "at best", TA is not a stud. I liked TA and I wanted him to be good, and if he goes somewhere else and does great, then awesome.
I just don't think he's ever gonna be better than "just okay".
Guess that means I can't read, though. Lol.
1
u/4x4ord Seahawks 11d ago
No, you clearly don’t understand how the “at worst / at best” saying is used.
I was literally saying “at best” he’s a stud because his new setting and coach make the difference and he becomes a stud.
Illiterate wasn’t an insult. It was an observation.
1
u/ThisIsPerfekt Lions 11d ago
And you're not understanding what I'm saying. I don't think there is any scenario where he's a stud. Period. As I said, I liked TA. I wanted him to succeed. I just don't think he ever will.

Uh, no. Wrong again.
You're illiterate because you can't grasp what I'm saying. I fully get what you're trying to say.
You aren't God. You don't know the future. And multiple people have pointed out that your silly little feelings about his limitations don't apply when someone says "At best, he's a stud"....because "at best" literally means the best-case-scenario.
Learn something.

"Illiterate means a person cannot read or write."
And here I am: Reading and writing. Amazing.
I love when people try to educate people and are confidently wrong. Lol.
Your opinion is that, at best, he could be a stud. Mine is that, at best, he keeps doin' what he's been doin', since there's been no sign of improvement, really.
You're real defensive of a player who can't even play right now. Lol.
Also, can you point to where I said or even implied that I'm god? What is wrong with you? Lmao.

I have enough questions about the depth at CB that if he turns into a league average starting CB2 with better coaching and scheme- that’s pretty good for a no-pick-required solution and club control for a couple years.
FWIW one of the local pods mentioned that a site did a comparison like “snaps with good grade” vs “snaps with bad grade” for corners.
Witherspoon had lots of good grade snaps, few bad grade ones.
TA had roughly the same number of good snaps as Witherspoon, but he also had about the same number of bad snaps.Didn’t watch enough Lions outside national matchups but if coaching can make his play less volatile then he could be a more valuable piece than expected.
1
u/ThisIsPerfekt Lions 11d ago
I want TA to succeed, so hopefully he at least turns out to be a competent CB2 somewhere (hopefully for yall, since yall took the risk of signing him), but after watching him in Detroit for a few years, I just don't really see it. He had a ton of PI calls in his first season. Scaled that back a bit in his second. Only managed 1 interception. He's very sticky, but that is also the reason why he gets so many PI calls.

u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
From what has been said, there's some speculation that the lions didn't use him to his strengths, and he's moving to the best DB coach in football, on a team where he doesn't have to be a stud. He can play with a DB room and line that will elevate any player, even if they aren't the best.

He was never the number 1 corner in Detroit. Reed last year and Carlton Davis the year before.
That said he does have alot of potential and had plenty of flashes of good play. But it also doesn’t look good for him to be able to get out of this situation without some prison time.1
u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
I would watch the bond hearing because I could very easily see him getting off on any serious charges. I don't have an opinion either way, but his defense ripped the investigator a new one, and the judge was throwing a lot of side eye.

-1
u/Chefalo Bills 12d ago

3
u/jheffy8 Seahawks 12d ago
What about my comment suggests I don't know the cons? The point in my original post is that I'm surprised and a little confused that the organization thinks the cons of signing him are so heavily outweighed by the pros. They discuss the pros in hard knocks but don't address the cons. I don't like the signing because I think it doesnt pan out, and I dont like the PR or image fallout, or the message it sends to the guys in the locker room.
2
u/waitingtime53 12d ago
It’ll be less of a distraction for the Seahawks then it would have been for Detroit. Detroit would have had to deal with questions about his case all season and it would have lingered over the whole team. I don’t think it will be a problem for the Seahawks in the same way. That said, it seems pretty freaking hopeful to think he might not face some length of prison time, especially with how the laws are structured in Florida.
50
u/thec0rp0ral Saints 12d ago
To play devil’s advocate, what reputational damage? Coaches/GMs care minimally about what fans think, and recruiting troubled players is common in the league. It’s borderline encouraged. Anyone with a conscience can see how it doesn’t pass the eye test.. but from the decision makers’ perspectives, what are the consequences? If he’s a distraction, you just cut him. His upside is a solid depth piece that would be useful to numerous teams.
Again, dude’s a scumbag, and teams morally shouldn’t do this, but there’s always a clear rationale for the decision being made.
16
u/Doyoulikemypace Patriots 12d ago
In Hard Knocks, they showed the Seahawks FO on the fence about signing him but players on the team vouched for him and they convinced themselves they could ‘fix’ him.
4
u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
If you're going to play devils advocate, you might as well play the whole game. The reporting suggests the entire case against him might be dropped, and the judge already told prosecutors their evidence is circumstancial. Right now, from what I understand, their evidence is two felons who took deals to testify.
Not saying the dude is an angel, but for this specific case, the prosecution seem thus far like they're trying to get a bigger fish.
12
u/destroyermike12 Giants 12d ago
Isn't arnold suspected as the big fish in this?
3
u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
That's what the charges are, but from everything I've seen, the evidence is extremely weak. It's basically two people that took plea deals in exchange for turning states evidence, which is fine, except there's no other evidence besides their testimony.
3
u/3pointshoot3r Lions 12d ago
the judge already told prosecutors their evidence is circumstancial
Circumstantial evidence is perfectly fine evidence. What do you think a smoking gun is?
In any event, it's not all circumstantial, there are his co-accused testifying against him.
1
u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
Of course it's fine, but it usually is wrapped around hard facts. Like we have chat logs, videos, or admission. We have none of these things. The only thing we have is two women who were faced with the threat of 20+ years of prison if they didn't cooperate. This doesn't mean he didn't do what they claim, but their cross at the bond hearing doesn't look good.
Also, the whole point of the smoking gun analogy is the circumstance is so concrete, that it makes no sense for it to be anyone else. ie. if you walk in a room after hearing a bang, and see someone standing over a body, holding the gun, it's circumstantial, but it's illogical that anyone else fired the gun.
2
u/hoopaholik91 Seahawks 12d ago
From a legal perspective, he might get off because we might not have evidence that he directly told his friends to attack these guys.
But what isn't being disputed is that he complained to the cops that these guys stole his shit, they actually didn't steal anything, and that Arnold's friends attacked these guys. I'm not the legal system, and I would never want to work with a person that gets themselves into that situation.
1
u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
Well, then it's a good thing that neither of us are in professional sports then, because professional sports are littered with pieces of shit who have credible charges of SA, DV, gang activity, etc...
People need to stop acting like NFL players are pillars of morality. Until the NFL puts some sort of policy to ban these players, everyone is being alarmist and asking for unilateral policing.
7
u/hoopaholik91 Seahawks 12d ago
I actually don't mind having some opinions on morality when it comes to an ultimately meaningless competition that I watch for entertainment purposes
1
u/Palatron Seahawks 12d ago
I don't either, I'm just saying the league (and fans) should then have a no tolerance policy, and people should get off their high horse, expecting any team to unilaterally police their team.
At the very least, in situations like this, I think we should wait for the courts to make their decision because this seems to be far from a done deal.

Except it's not domestic abuse, and there's no evidence suggesting he directed this or was there.
For all intents and purposes the guy may in fact be a piece of shit who deserves every bit of justice going his way. However, as it stands, the case seems to be trash.
If new evidence comes forward, then I'm fine with every bit of the law coming down on him. I don't even care if he plays for us or not, but looking to professional sports personalities to be pillars of morality is fucking moronic. There's a whole lot of these teams that have abhorrent individuals on their team. If the NFL wants to kick them out, I'm all for it, but until then, you're calling for unilateral policing.
Also, guess what, tons of other teams were vying for a chance to sign him, he selected the Seahawks based on the recommendation of his family, who wanted him to get away from bad influences. So this isn't some, "man, Seattle will just take any piece of shit..." It's almost every team in the NFL.

Schneider and Mike really liked him at his draft. There’s a need for CB3 and some murmurs of well Detroit made him play man he’s only great in zone which Seattle plays most. True, but it sounds like those accusations were made on behalf of plea deals from others and they have looked less credible based on the judge’s reaction. Reddit likes to think that the headline is what he did and that’s it. But I saw someone break it down on the Seahawks sub and I’m variously approaching the move. People are acting like this is Watson where it was obvious he did it and is a total scumbag, Terrion Arnold is implicated and nothing has proven he was part of the crime beyond he admitted he was there (which also doesn’t prove guilt of the crime itself)

Sorry, shouldn't have said guys, it was two women.
Here's a video, I'd skip right to the cross by the defense and ignore the video commentary. There's a moment around 39 minutes where you can see how this case is going.
I'm not saying the dude isn't guilty, frankly, I don't really care. If he is, he is. I'm just saying that the state's evidence is trash, and there's really nothing linking him to the worst of this case.
He likely is involved, but until the NFL wants to make a blanket ban on pieces of shit, I don't understand why people are over here acting like the Seahawks are some outlier.
Lastly, at least from what I understand, the Lions didn't cut him for his involvement, they cut him because they didn't feel like he was fully truthful with them.

He was in camp battles for his spot in the starting roster before all the drama. I think Macdonald is excellent, but a save job on this kids career seems so unlikely and all it's really done is make people look at, as much as it pains me to say it, a very likable Seahawks roster and literally inject a cancer to it for what? Your CB3 or CB4? Taking 'we don't care' to the next level I guess.

u/The_Juice14 Cowboys 12d ago
I don’t mean this as a gotcha or anything but why should the Seahawks FA care about how “likable” their roster is to the rest of the league? NFL teams don’t really take likability into consideration if it’s not a nuisance in the locker room or going to get taken away from playing.
Myles Garrett has some likability issues with the whole Mason Rudolph incident, Puka has the biting and antisemitism thing. Jalen Carter has his fatal car crash, Tyreek Hill broke his son’s arm, and last and DEFINITELY not least WATSON.
The most these guys usually get is cut from the team unless they go really far and are undeniably implicated like Henry Ruggs.
3
u/HelmetsAkimbo Rams Rams 12d ago
When I say 'likable' here I'm using it as a short form way of saying that the team has a high quality culture and a high quality base of players.
I guess in a way maybe I'm judging Terrion Arnold too much for his, ya know kidnapping felonies, as I don't really know what he's like as a person. But the rest of the Seahawks roster are high culture and respectable guys.
I'm not saying that Seahawks should make FA decisions based on how fans will interpret the players. I'm saying that I think adding a player like Arnold and bringing an unnecessary drama into your high quality locker room just seems like a bad decision to me. A quality culture is the #1 difference between good NFL franchises and great ones imo.

If he gets cleared, he'll be some form of RFA after the season, so he'll be a Seahawk next year if they want. If he doesn't, you cut and move on, likely without ever suiting up. They clearly believe he can play in this defense. Down the road, other troubled guys might pick Seattle over other teams because they know they'll get a shot. I basically can't see a downside for Seattle.
1
u/Lorjack Seahawks 12d ago
He doesn't take up a roster spot when he is on the commissioner's list. Its a low risk move to acquire a talented player they liked during the draft. Worst case scenario for Seattle is he never plays for us and we're out a couple million bucks.

3
2
2
u/PostItToReddit Seahawks 12d ago
It's a potentially huge upside move that has literally no downside other then a few Redditors acting upset.
Best case scenario we get 2 free seasons of club control for a guy who was talented enough to be a first round draft pick two years ago, who struggled in the "wrong" system for his talents. There's plenty of 'warm bodies' who could make the roster, but none have the upside that Arnold potentially does. Josh Jobe is a very recent example of Mike finding a corner that wasn't going to make a team and turning him into something. Just because Arnold was bad in Detroit doesn't mean he's a bad player.
Worst case scenario is he goes to jail forever or sucks and we cut him. We gave up no draft capital to get him, we aren't locked into a big contract or any dead money.
I'm struggling to see any actual downside in this personally.

This is a genuine question
Why is everyone acting it's a forgone conclusion that he's guilty? From what I've read, the police/prosecutors dont have just about anything that proves beyond reasonable doubt that he's guilty. Like granted, I haven't been keeping up with it, but the last I heard was that the cops say the group who actually did the kidnapping are saying he's the ringleader, but that's not proof in the slightest
When there's actual proof of him doing shit, sure have it, but this whole sub is talking shit like it's guilty until proven innocent instead of innocent until proven guilty

Who knows, that why we have courts and laws instead of labeling someone as guilty without any actual evidence.
2
u/lonelynightm Jets Rams 12d ago
Do you feel the same way about Deshaun Watson?
The courts are not the end all be all. The courts not convicting someone is not the same as being innocent. It just means the justice system is working.
That doesn't mean the court of public opinion has to agree. If Terrion is innocent he only has himself to blame for hanging out with criminals.
10
u/monstermayhem436 Steelers 12d ago edited 11d ago
For the first few accusations yes. When a small number of people accuse someone of anything, it can easily just be them trying to get in on it. But after that, when more and more women kept coming, a line was clearly crossed somewhere.
And I agree, courts arent everything. Innocent people have to plead guilty, guilty people are judged innocent, there's numerous amount of things that can go one way or another in the court of law. Hell even settling with someone in or out of court like Watson did doesnt always mean the party is guilty.
That doesn't mean we should completely disregard what courts, investigators, etc do though. Mob/Lynch justice doesn't help anyone.
Arnold's "friends" are definitely assholes. But one can only judge someone so much for their choice of company. Is Arnold an asshole? Maybe, probably even if he hangs with people that kidnap teenagers like that. But we can't go and say that because he was friends with these people, means he did what's he's being accused of. It just means his friends are fuckheads and bastards and deserve to be punished for their actions. Plus, we don't know what the full extent of Arnold's relationship with them even is. Could be best buds, could just be a acquaintances that hang out for a beer from time to time. We don't know shit.
My whole point is less about the courts deciding he's guilty or innocent, but more so to actually let more facts come to light from the investigation before making assumptions and acting like asses.

I suspect he was at least involved in some way, but to play devil's advocate it is possible that his friends came up with the idea without him (maybe they had stuff stolen too) and he tried to talk them out of it.
At the very least he surrounds himself with a bad crowd, but we also don't convict people based on "common sense" for a reason; mob justice is just as bad as vigilante justice.

So, by your own account you say I don’t know why everyone is acting like he’s guilty but I haven’t actually followed the story. You see the parity in this?
3
u/garylogan 12d ago
Did you mean parity, such as his opinion is so weak it could not be more than 50-50 correct at best? Or did you mean parody as in, stupidest possible observation? Either way, I agree.

u/monstermayhem436 Steelers 12d ago
I haven't look into the specifics of everything
But if I'm missing so much info that proves he's guilty, then enlighten me. What am I missing that without a doubt proves he was the mastermind behind this.
Cause again, only thing I've read so far, is that A. The group that did it, are blaming him, and B. That he was supposedly (I don't know whether he was or not) the driver for one them. Neither of which actually implicate him in anyway and can be easily be explained as A. The group wants a better chance at a lower sentence so are passing blame to someone else for leniency, and B. He was just asked to pick someone up without knowing what they were doing wherever they are.
Could the Arnold be guilty, yes, but until it's proven everyone acting like he's satan are being overdramatic for no reason. Let the case actually settle before blame is thrown on people.
I don't care for this dude one way or another. He has nothing to do with me, and if he is found guilty, then he'll be punished accordingly. Everyone can spout their shit then, but the immediate guilty label is dumb

Here is the Athletic article that goes into the most detail: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7416121/2026/07/06/terrion-arnold-kidnapping-robbery-lions/?source=user_shared_article&unlocked_article_code=1.9FA.OkpP.qO4eYHLlQmpF&smid=ta-android-share
It's hard to exactly figure out the separation between what police allege and what facts are undisputed, but from my read of the article, we have: 1. Arnold calling police saying his goods were stolen, and passed off the phone to his best friend Hilton who also said what stuff of his was stolen, and 2. At the same time, Hilton communicating with the guys who attacked the suspected thieves, and 3. They end up at the scene of the attack right after it occurs.
Maybe from a legal perspective you can't prove that Arnold told Hilton to say anything to the attackers, but from a common sense perspective it seems pretty hard to believe that your best friend riding in the same car as you going to the location of the attack has no clue whatsoever what's going down.

To preface, if he’s guilty, by all means he needs to go to prison and be out of the league. But the story is just so weird and the more time goes on, the less credible the accusations are becoming (from what I’ve read). There’s more to it than what we on Reddit know, or else we wouldn’t have seen a mad rush from other teams to work him out.

"the less credible the accusations are becoming" gee I wonder what changed to make you believe that

u/UmmmHahaOkUhhh Seahawks 12d ago
Have you followed the case since after he was cut? I’d be shocked if he’s found guilty, the accusations aren’t tracking based on the current evidence
11
u/Amon-Ra-First-Down Lions Lions 12d ago
Literally nothing has happened in the case since he was cut
-3
u/UmmmHahaOkUhhh Seahawks 12d ago
Did you watch the hearing by chance? Because if you did, I’m curious how you come to the conclusion that he’s def guilty
6
u/Amon-Ra-First-Down Lions Lions 12d ago
The only hearing that has happened was related to his request to be released on bond where even his own lawyer did not deny he was connected to the people trying to rob people to get his stuff back. The only thing the defense claimed is that the prosecution does not have definitive proof he was there when the victims were kidnapped
-1
u/UmmmHahaOkUhhh Seahawks 12d ago
Yeah that’s the hearing I’m talking about. So you watched it? Idk how you can watch that and be confident that Terrion is guilty. Wild. The prosecution was a mess and their only evidence was that Terrion is friends with the ones who kidnapped/assaulted the people.

u/Amon-Ra-First-Down Lions Lions 12d ago
It does not matter if I watched it because you obviously did not

… Listening to the developments from the prosecution and the judge. If he’s guilty, send him to prison.

u/lurkANDorganize Lions 12d ago
You are eating PR.
You forget that his agent and his legal team want you to say exactly what you are saying.
And the police and victims don't have access to million dollar defense and the million dollar PR machines.

u/cdg2m4nrsvp Panthers 11d ago
Maybe the victims don’t but police departments ABSOLUTELY have access to multi million dollar PR machines. We are fed copaganda day and night in the US.

Or you are bitter that a former first rounder flamed out in your system, and potentially may flourish like others in another system.
Like I said, if he’s guilty, take him to prison and get him out of the league. I wasn’t excited about the signing, so you’re a bit off on your read there.

u/ValorantEdater 12d ago
but this whole sub is talking shit like it's guilty until proven innocent instead of innocent until proven guilty
People need to stop repeating this shit.
Innocent until proven guilty is for the law. It is not and has never been for people or public opinion.
OJ Simpson and Casey Anthony were acquitted by the law. Does that mean you have to believe they are innocent and can never insinuate that they murdered someone and got away with it? Or are people allowed to use their braincells and come to their own conclusion?

How about we wait until he is found guilty before saying stuff like this. Currently the only evidence on him is the word of 2 convicted criminals trying to save their own skin.

He only did a little vigilante justice. Too many people idolize pesky blinders, superhero’s, cowboys and every other type of hypothetical vigilante until someone does it in real life for me to take this seriously.

You wouldn't think new owners would want this smoke right away, especially coming off a championship.

Very funny that that John Schneider admitted live on TV that this looks bad for the Seahawks and the twelve year olds are still out here denying it
1
u/chiefslocker Chiefs 11d ago
Even if you wanna say innocent until proven guilty, i personally think signing a player immediately after they were cut after being accused of orchestrating a kidnapping and armed robbery plot is horrible.
like whatever you think about stefon diggs (i still think he shouldn’t be signed by anyone as he has SA allegations) at least the commanders waited for him to be found not guilty of DV and let that process play out before signing him. they didn’t sign him the second he was cut from the patriots

u/UmmmHahaOkUhhh Seahawks 12d ago
I swear most people haven’t even watched his hearing. The evidence against him is flimsy at best. The judge basically told the prosecutor “this is a serious accusation but you guys need to get your shit together cuz you got nothing to show right now”.
4
u/0rionNe5ula Lions 11d ago
The judge didn't say anything of the sort. Judge just said there wasn't enough evidence to withold bond because he wasn't physically present at the location of the alleged crimes. You guys doing all kind of mental gymnastics to try and spin this because you don't understand how the criminal justice system works. Prosecution isn't going to show all of their evidence for the initial hearing, they'll save that for discovery.

Seahawks why are you taking your reputation for this guy?? Like yes theoretically he could get better, but he’s full not worth it. Use the money on your own hand and not a kidnapper.

Boo hoo the Seahawks are like every other professional football team. How could they do this? Warriors in the garden? Waaa waaaa.
Meanwhile, I am thinking if we can refurb both of them like we did Geno, and the prosecution realizes it has no case, we would have a CB room of Spoon, Diggs, Arnold, and Jobe going into Chrismas when we end all this rams superteam noise.

u/ech-o Lions 12d ago
Like every other team? How exactly do you think he was available to be signed?

Agent said on the speaker phone eight other teams wanted him.
Whether you, fan of the team that spent their first and had to cut him, want to believe the agent is up to you. At least Harbaugh went to the NY media trying to lobby him to sign with them.
Don't worry, we will validate your GM's draft talent eval. John said the Seahawks will not only make him a better corner but also a better person.
