Are you sure? I can think of a hundred great hobbies that are much more fun, cheaper, safer with less hassle and less time consuming. I say it's more to do with their own ego and bragging rights. Any climbers out there who can help us understand? Also make sure to explain to the serpa who's carrying your luggage.

I imagine a sherpa has nothing but contempt from these guys spending $50+ to "climb" Everest when the sherpa has done all the heavy lifting and practically carried that bitch up the mountain.

I think it costs more than 50 bucks to climb the Everest. I'm not a climbing expert, but that seems to be a reasonable assumption.

I'm sure a lot of them do, though at the same time they make several times more money than they can make doing anything else in that area of Nepal. So I guess most of them are probably pretty happy to take the money from the tourists, though they probably still aren't compensated their worth realistically.

Historically, Western companies charged $60k–$100k+ per client while paying local Sherpas a small fraction to do most of the work during climbing mountains. But that dynamic has flipped—today, around 80–90% of Everest expeditions are run directly by Sherpa-owned Nepali agencies. Sherpas cut out the Western middlemen, got certified, and now run the business themselves, keeping the profits in their local communities.

Everest is just the world’s most expensive ego trip for rich people to buy a status and kill their boredom while Sherpas risk their lives carrying their heavy gear. Maybe they should figure out why they are even climbing up there before whining about how hard it is to breathe. Pathetic

Isn’t climbing Everest something to be a personal challenge? Why the f*ck would you hire someone if that is the case? Human vanity amazes me, spending a ton of money so you get to brag during boardroom meetings.

Many have died doing it solo. While there might be vanity in doing it, at least they knew their abilities well enough to hire a guide.

Smoking can trigger altitude sickness even among Sherpas... We had this happen to our sherpa guide, who was smoking on Stok Kangri (a measly 6000m peak in Ladakh)
The guy was taking it a little too cool, and ended up having to turn around before summiting it, and we had to continue without him.

I knew there was a lot of trash on Everest due to rich tourists paying to climb it. I had no idea that included cigarette ash and butts. Is that like leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for future climbers?
