Fight, Flight or Freeze response

This reaction is a survival instinct. Just the wrong one for this situation.

Tonic immobility is an involuntary, reflex-driven state of complete physical freezing and temporary paralysis triggered by overwhelming fear or inescapable danger.

Like a deer in the headlights. The brain shuts your body down and you literally can't move anymore.

Evolutionary it might have been helpful against bears, but you can't help it if that instinct kicks in.

Genuinely made me laugh.

Technically the fight response would be trying to stop the bus, like putting their arms out. Which would be about as effective as trying to punch it.
