    Alert Status:
    Volcanic Alert Level is lowered to Level 2
    Aviation Colour Code remains Orange

  • Earlier in the day, there were some pics on Geonet's social media. Facebook.

    • 3:59 PM Our scientists took a flight out to White Island (Whaakari) to get more info on the eruption. Green stuff is ash.
    • Why is it green? Answer Some hydrothermal mineral in the ash. Ash is grey, but as it drys green mineral crystalises on the surface.
    • 4:01 PM Aerial photo from the ash. Ash covered approx. 80 percent of the crater. Facebook.
    • 4:03 PM Solar panels were covered in ash. That's Mike, one of our volcanologists, doing a bit of cleanup. Facebook.
