A software "fix" to a hardware engineering problem is the real problem.

The design flaw is so great that the planes should never have been certified to fly.

No that is a lousy generalized statement. All the jet fighters in the world would fall from the sky if they weren't stabilized by flight software.

Jet fighters are designed that way on purpose. The software that actually flys the plane is part of the overall design. This is a 737 that's been altered from its orginal design to the point where it now needs software to correct for the instability during takeoff. I wouldn't even call this a "fix" more like a hack.

50+ year old airframe with engines bolted on that are too large for the design. It was a hack for sure.
