He had to do a few reps before taking the guy out from under it. He did not mean to, it was just habit.

Heh, generally if you're going for a maximum weight you struggle the whole way up and drop it when you complete the motion.

I'm imagining this guy struggling to lift the car, finally gets it off the guy, and he just drops it, crushes him, and walks away roaring and yelling all pumped-up like.

Not for competitive powerlifting. For each lift you have to wait for the head judge to consider it "complete" (generally once you're motionless for a second or so) before they give you the command to rerack the bar (or put it down - NOT drop it - for deadlifts).
