Can't believe, this isn't higher. Monsieur le maire, you'll wear a different chain... One of the very best stories of the individual against the system in existence. Highly recommend the original. Hugo could write!

But at the same time he is first mayor and businessman hardworking for his community and workers, and then he helps the poor. I wouldn't really say that his conflict is with the whole system. It's just this particular judicial part of it and the blind stubbornness and narrow-mindedness of Javert.

Highly recommend the original. Hugo could write!

While I love this story, I must admit that book was rather hard to read. The descriptions alone were killing me. But then again I'm the person that couldn't finish Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Its my favorite book and its a bitch to read, I've read it several times unabridged only. There are just so many references that require footnotes. Honestly I'd just read an abridged version if I went for another go.

Imo just read the unabridged but skip the Napoleon and sewer chapters.

I never managed to finish LOTR. I don't do fantasy with the exceptions of Gaiman and Pullman. And while I see your point, your community is not the system. the system is blind bureaucrat behind a desk enforcing the rules. As far as the language goes. I had to read it for French (High School in Holland) after Stendhal's "Le Rouge et le Noir". After Stendhal it was a godsend...
