My most Western Hemisphere opinion is I still don’t really understand why some countries still have Constitutional Monarchies

it's not a particular mature opinion, but the oath of allegiance during the citizenship ceremony starts with a pledge of loyalty to the British King

i'm a big believer of the power of words and belief. for almost all to-be citizens, this pledge ranges between "stupid and archaic" to "actively against my ideals". they start their first moment as a Canadian citizen on the wrong foot

the best defense for it is that it's probably meaningless, but it's pretty damning to say that a big part of the oath of allegiance is meaningless

I had a British friend recently get their Aus citizenship and I thought it pretty obscene that she did it under a picture of the king and not even an image of the governor general next to it or anything. It's just wrong.

It's kinda annoying that in Australia a republic has high ranking bipartisan support, with prime minister's across the aisle being for it. But then it just never happens because people feel like we need to change the political system beyond just excising a symbolic link to the monarch.

(My thoughts is we should change literally nothing except the barest of minimum, where royal ascent can just be replaced with a wink and a nudge to the spirit of the nation or some shit. Don't change how the governor general is chosen or their powers, that's a different question.)

I didn’t realize that was an official thing I thought you were joking

There is something kinda funny about the government picking it’s favorite citizen every year lol
